castle with pool for sale Brive-la-Gaillarde, France
Castle Brive-la-Gaillarde (19)
Ref.4472 : Beautiful french castle for sale in South West of France. The château nestles on the slopes of a small valley from which a cascade of ponds cascades down through the woods. With no other view than its grounds, it is a haven of tranquillity. Uzerche, the ‘Pearl of the Limousin’ and the Périgord Noir, with its delicacies, are close by. Pompadour is just a few minutes away. With almost 150 events a year, the Cité du Cheval is sure to please lovers of the equestrian arts, while night owls will be delighted to learn that a casino is due to open soon. A pretty tree-lined driveway leads to an esplanade where the château sits enthroned. Or rather the dwelling, as the residence can be divided into three branches, those of a U shape. There is the dwelling, an East wing and a North wing, with a total living area of around 800sqm. The three-storey dwelling comprises two main buildings linked by an entrance porch. Its south-facing facade is flanked on the west by a round tower and a square, projecting tower. The staircase tower to the north is integrated into the facade. Beyond the gateway, under the archway on the right, is a large lounge. Adorned with an imposing fireplace in the style typical of the 16th/ 17th century, it bears the later Lobeilhac coat of arms. This austere room evokes the hunting returns of the Lieutenant de Louveterie, the smell of leather and dogs drying in front of the hearth. At the far end of the room, a passageway leads to the east wing, which we will talk about later. Back under the arch, a few steps lead up to the spiral staircase serving the entire dwelling. On the mezzanine floor: You enter the dwelling via the grand salon. In this splendid room, a monumental fireplace, the pebbled floor and the stained glass windows are reminiscent of the opulent homes of the High Middle Ages. In one corner of the living room, the base of the Round Tower, a small room with a semi-circular bench, serves as a discussion or games room. An archway leads to the fully-equipped kitchen and the adjoining breakfast room. A bathroom completes this level. First floor: The first half-level leads into the ‘Long Room’, a beautiful long room with half-timbering and wood panelling. Two doors conceal a bathroom and toilet. Back on the staircase, you reach the second half-level with its beautiful gallery with terracotta floor tiles and painted ceilings. It leads first to the ‘Squire's Room’. This vast suite comprises a sitting room with fireplace, separated from the bedroom by a stained glass partition by Amédée de Caranza. The laddered parquet flooring, the vast windows, the superbly painted ceilings and the size of the room transport us irresistibly to the Renaissance. A beautiful bathroom, installed in the Round Tower, completes this flat. Back in the gallery, you will find two smaller bedrooms with shared bathrooms. Second floor: Above the Long Room is a large attic bedroom with its own bathroom and toilet. There is access to the terrace that joins the stairway tower and the square tower. The third floor features an imposing billiards room, whose inverted ship's hull gives it a bewitching charm. Small rooms at the top of the towers provide a pleasant contrast with their more intimate feel. The east wing has a slate gable roof. It forms a corner with the Logis. It is accessed via the drawing room with its coat of arms or via a double door through the courtyard. It comprises Ground floor: entrance hall and remarkable quarter-turn baluster staircase, vast 17th century dining room, bedroom with alcove, shower room and toilet. From the dining room, a staircase leads down to the large cellar, ideal for a wine cellar. You can see the granite vein on which the house is solidly anchored. Upstairs: A long passageway leads to two beautiful bedrooms, each with its own bathroom or shower room and wc. The north wing is a group of buildings that were probably used as stables and shops, but now form a single unit. It includes : On the ground floor: a very large tiled games room suitable for all types of use, whether for families or events. Behind a glass wall, a room used as a bedroom that has retained its original fireplace. There is also a small kitchen and a toilet on this level. On the mezzanine level, there is a beautiful corridor with ladder-style parquet flooring, organised around the skylight that illuminates the games room. This space leads to an attic bedroom with its own bathroom and toilet. The main outbuilding is a dwelling known as the ‘Little Barn’, because of its previous use. This dwelling has a living area of around 80 m2. It is equipped with a 2022 Interdomo Domomat oil-fired boiler and a wood-burning stove. Restoration of the Petite grange was completed in 2006. There are: On the ground floor: a large, comfortable tiled living room with beamed ceilings. A lovely kitchen area and storeroom. Upstairs: three attic bedrooms with shower room and toilet. The second outbuilding is the swimming pool area with a 10 x 5 m pool, heated and treated by electrolysis (salt) as well as a large pool house with shower and wc. The enclosure is secured by walls lined with hedges around part of the perimeter. Other small roofs complete the outbuildings: a bread oven, located between the swimming pool and the dwelling, and a garden shed, built on the edge of the pond. Finally, there is a laundry and boiler room in the basement of the dwelling, accessible from the inner courtyard. The grounds, covering an area of around 7 acres (2.85 hectares), are shaped like an uneven diamond. The château is at its centre. This area opens onto a tree-lined driveway leading to the esplanade at the entrance to the château. This esplanade, adorned with flowerbeds and a magnificent wisteria climbing over the dwelling, is an impressive sight. Beyond the avenues laid out around the château, the English-style park features a succession of meadows, small woods and high hedges. Behind the North Wing, a charming pond marks the start of the ‘cascade’ that disappears into the surrounding woods. Castle Arnac-Pompadour (19)
The best of both worlds- a stunning 14th century château, once the property of Madame de Pompadour, now lovingly restored and ready to move into. Situated near Arnac-Pompadour, headquarters of the French National Stud, this beautifully-presented stone château is offered for sale in excellent order. Consisting of 30 exquisitely-decorated rooms on three levels including 11 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, the property nestles within private grounds of 2.8 hectares. Probably of medieval origin, at one time a wolf-hunting lodge, the château is believed to have been given by Louis XV to his favourite mistress, Madame de Pompadour, in 1745. Its documented history traces back from around 1600 to the Sanzillon family, whose emblem can still be seen in several places around the château today. An impressively-proportioned great hall with imposing stone fireplace and pisé floor provides a centrepiece for the ground floor. Upstairs, the elegantly decorated master bedroom is adorned with rare enamel glass panels from the internationally-renowned 19th century artist, Amédée de Caranza. Many historic features can be found throughout the château including ancient brickwork containing text and a carved wooden mantlepiece. The present owners embarked on an extensive restoration project some 25 years ago, utilising master craftsmen and the finest local materials to bring the property into pristine condition. Across the courtyard from the main château building is a spacious two-storey galleried annexe which would be a perfect function facility for weddings or conferences. In addition to the château, there is also a 3 bedroomed cottage in excellent order, as well as a stand-alone traditional bread oven. Securely fenced, a salt water heated swimming pool with large changing room/summer kitchen sits discreetly between the château and cottage. Within the grounds are many mature trees and shrubs, a large decorative pond and a fresh water spring. Garden equipment is securely housed in a triple garage/toolstore. With just a 10-minute drive to all commerce, the racetrack and of course the magnificent 11th century château at Pompadour, this property is ideally located. Castle Perigueux (24)
Ref. 4278 : Magnificient 15th & 18th c. listed castle, for sale, in Dordogne This magnificent chateau dates back to the 14th century and is located in the Dordogne, between Brive and Périgueux. Nestling on a hillside overlooking the River Auvézère, it enjoys a beautiful, peaceful setting. The property spans more than 29 acres of parklands and gardens, woods, a pond and numerous buildings (caretaker's cottage, barn, stables and henhouse ....). Originally, this area probably housed a fortified house, built to watch over and protect the ford crossings between the Limousin and Périgord regions. At the end of the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453), this fortification lost its raison d'être. In 1521, Pascal Dolce, a native of Béarn, set up a forge along the Auvézère, near the now obsolete fortifications. Under the management of his successor, Noël Souvelin, the forge prospered. Souvelin probably obtained the concession for the old, abandoned fortification and undertook extensive work to transform it into a residence. His daughter Marguerite married François Pasquet, a merchant from Excideuil, in 1539. The Pasquet family then took charge of the castle and forge for several generations. Jean Pasquet, their eldest son, served Kings Henry III and Henry IV as a knight. His imprint is visible throughout the castle and garden, whether through his motto ('Spes mea deus') or his representation as the 'Knight with the white feather'. In 1656, following a marriage, the castle and forge came under the ownership of the de Lubersac family. During the French Revolution, the château was abandoned and became national property. It wasn't until 1819 that Louis Combescot, ancestor of the current owner and master blacksmith at the Bord ponds, bought the forge and the château, both of which were in an advanced state of disrepair. He and his descendants set about clearing away the irreparable ruins resulting from decades of neglect. The family moved into the château, and the forge remained in operation for over a century, until the last iron was poured from the blast furnace in 1930. In its current structure, the château comprises a central main building, set between two round towers, and a wing set at right angles to this building. The large courtyard and the parkland that extends from it are bounded to the west by the buildings used as outbuildings. The west facade of the main building features mullioned windows on both floors and two dormer windows opening into the attic; these dormer windows are topped by pediments with solid tympanums. The angled south-facing building dates from the 17th and 18th centuries but was rebuilt on earlier foundations. Behind this wing, a square pavilion was added in the 19th century, blending in with the rest of the building. On the east facade, overlooking the river and the forge, the two towers of unequal diameter were probably originally linked by a curtain wall. As on the west facade, the main building between them features mullioned windows and dormer windows with ornate pediments. The architectural load of the junction between the north tower and the main building is supported by a horn, in the hollow of which is nestled a sculpture representing the tortured face of a figure wearing a draped headdress. The Renaissance gateway, which has been rebuilt in the grounds, symbolises the Italianate style of the late 16th century with its many sculptures. A cartouche in the centre of the entablature bears the castle's motto 'SPES MEA DEUS'. The château has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1979, and is closely linked to the forge, whose origins probably date back to the end of the Hundred Years' War. It was built between the 14th and 16th centuries and comprises a main building flanked by two cylindrical towers. On the façade of the main building, a beautiful Renaissance door framed by two columns supporting a triangular pediment opens onto a straight barrel-vaulted staircase. The current owners' dwelling is set at right-angles to the house and faces north/south over three floors. Built on an earthwork and cellar for the towers, the castle spans approx. 640 sqm of living space and comprises : For the east/west-facing wing: Ground floor with 4 m high ceilings: -An entrance hall and a vast lounge with exposed beams and monumental stone fireplace, parquet flooring. -A study in the tower giving access to the château's dungeons. It has an attractive roof frame and a slate roof. -An old pigsty and henhouse in need of some work. -A long building comprising two barns measuring 185 sqm and 300 sqm, currently used for storage, but which could be used for receptions such as weddings, exhibitions, etc. A study has been carried out for this purpose. -A swimming pool area with a pool house, kitchen and equipment room. The swimming pool, measuring 4x8m, was built in 2018 and equipped with a chlorine filtration system and automatic cover.
