Castle Chateauroux (36)

A 19th-century chateau with outhouses, a chapel and a lake, nestled in 30 hectares of grounds in the south of France’s Touraine province. The seigneurial home that was built here on the ruins of a medieval mansion, of which no vestiges remain, was endlessly redesigned until it collapsed in 1860. In 1890, the decision was made to rebuild the edifice on the site. A renowned architect, Louis-Alfred Trolliet, a specialist in the reconstruction of chateaux, was entrusted with this task. He was responsible for the edifice you can see here today. Trolliet was nicknamed ‘the Viollet-le-Duc of the Berry province’ in a nod to the famous 19th-century French architect Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc who restored many medieval monuments. Trolliet won his spurs as a leading figure of the Troubadour style in French architecture with his restoration of the Château de Romefort in the town of Ciron. To rebuild the present property, he did not adopt the Troubadour style but rather the style of the Loire Valley chateaux that was also in vogue at the time. Trolliet opted for a long rectangular dwelling crowned with tall hipped roofs of slate tiles recalling the Château de Chenonceau and the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau. The grand edifice comes into view once you have gone through the entrance gate and made your way up the long central drive punctuated symmetrically with topiary box shrubs neatly clipped into cones. The château faces east and west. Its main section has a ground floor, a first floor and a second floor in the roof space. The adjoining square tower has a third floor in its roof space. The symmetrical elevations are rendered and punctuated with large small-paned windows fitted with wooden louvred shutters that are painted sky blue. Gabled dormers punctuate the roof of the main section and that of the square tower. Beyond the château, the drive crosses dense woodland on this estate, which covers around 30 hectares and includes a 1.2-hectare lake. Trolliet also decided to build two large lodges as foreparts of the château exactly opposite it. These two buildings are rectangular. They have a ground floor and a first floor. A third lodge stands at a right angle to one of them. This third structure has an eclectic style and recalls a train station. On the south side, a circular dovecote with a cone roof of terracotta tiles adorns the grounds. On the east side, there is a heated swimming pool. Behind the outhouses, a secondary entrance leads to a gravelled car park. Lastly, on the north-west side, there is a private lake. In the middle of this lake there is a small tree-dotted island.

Castle Chateauroux (36)

Ref.3866 : Listed french castle for sale in the centre of France. This important village castle in the Indre department was built in the 15th century on the foundations of a late 12th century fortress, and was mainly redesigned in the late 19th century with neo-gothic decoration. The countryside is beautiful, authentic and peaceful, and you can live off the resources of the village and the small medium-sized town 8km away. The castle has retained the appearance of a fortress, even though two sides of the quadrilateral have been levelled, thus opening up the castle to the light and making it lose its military function. However, it is still as imposing as ever, towering towards the sky and surrounded by walls, in the middle of its park. The construction on a terrace, its high towers, the impressive volume of the rooms and its nine centuries of history make it a real castle. The raised ground floor opens onto the terrace, which offers a beautiful view of the park that surrounds the castle. It comprises two hallways, a dining room, a lounge, a kitchen, a library, a toilet, a bathroom and a laundry room. On this level, there are 300sqm. On the first floor, a vast reception level comprising three lounges in a row totalling 200sqm under 4.80 meters of joists. Chapel and master flat comprising a bedroom, a study, a bathroom, wc and dressing room. On the second floor: three other prestigious flats each consisting of a bedroom, a sitting room or study, bathroom and wc. Various other rooms, hidden passages through walls up to 2 metres wide. Above, under the attic, a 240sqm leisure room, bathroom and a staff flat with 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom. The whole of the property totals 1380sqm. It is worth noting the remarkable architectural quality, the quality of the equipment and the careful restoration: parquet or marble floors, monumental armorial fireplaces, polychromy of the chapel, friezes, etc. All this will leave a strong impression. The outbuildings: Only half of the entrance châtelet remains, and so the drawbridge has disappeared as well. However, the 15th century flamboyant gothic dwelling is still there and constitutes a comfortable, but unfinished, 6-room annex house. Heating by the castle's boiler. In the extension of this long building, there is an office, a tavern, a stable and a tack room. And at the end, another tower, fitted out, forming the corner of the quadrilateral. On the first floor, probably a former garrison dormitory, with monumental fireplaces. The fluids are distributed here. And here and there you can still find loopholes, a latrine, a stunner, a fire hydrant, because the traces of history are very present in these buildings which have been little transformed over the centuries. In the east tower, 3 levels of a room, a gunloft, a spiral staircase. On the opposite side, an interesting 15th century gallery, with columns with foliated capitals, partially embedded in the masonry. This building must have been used for agricultural or service purposes, but remains quite rare in its current state. Enclosed park of 4.92 hectares, planted with large ornamental trees, probably reconstructed and laid out with paths towards the end of the 19th century. Vegetable garden with part of an orchard (cherry, apple, walnut and pear trees) The park is enclosed by walls, which provide privacy in the park from the village. The result is a very good outdoor atmosphere. We invite you to visit our website Cabinet Le Nail ( www.cabinetlenail.com/en/ ) to browse our latest listings or find out more about this property.

Listed castle Chateauroux (36)

Magnificent 15th century castle remodeled in the 19th century built on the foothills of a 12th century fortress overlooks a small village typical of Indre at the beginning of Brenne, 5 minutes from a village which benefits from shops and local services. With its impressive towers, it overlooks the village and thus offers a majestic view of the countryside. It benefits from exceptional light, a 2.4 ha park with century-old trees, an orchard (pear, walnut, cherry, apple trees), a vegetable garden. The ground floor is accessed by steps leading to a superb entrance or guard room. Crossing it you access a gigantic terrace paved with magnificent large slabs of Burgundy stone offering a superb view of the fortified wall and the park. The 300m2 of the ground floor consists of a dining room, living room, kitchen, office, library, office, bathroom, toilet and have high ceilings. The upper floors are accessed by 2 superb stone staircases, the walls of the castle are 2m wide. On the first floor of 200 m2 there are lounges almost 5m high, a chapel adjoining a superb bedroom of 80 m2 and a magnificent marble bathroom like all those in the castle. On the second floor, three superb suites with living rooms, numerous rooms that could become offices, bedrooms with their bathrooms and WC. It is accessed through secret passages hidden in a library. On the third floor in the converted attic you will discover an astonishing loft-style living room of 240m2 with an impressive inverted boat frame. The 1400m2 castle is completely restored with breathtaking attention to detail and respect for the period with its marble, woodwork, wooden floors.... You literally just have to put down your suitcases. The two outbuildings offer countless possibilities for developing 15 to 20 bedrooms, bathrooms for gîte projects, hotels, receptions, guest rooms, etc. In the first outbuilding from the 15th century near the main entrance to the castle where the drawbridge was located. A superb suite with bathroom has already been restored and there remain 4 other rooms to be fitted out. Upstairs a gigantic room of 300m2, certainly an old garrison dormitory can be transformed into bedrooms or other. The current owner has already run the electrical cables for renovation At the end of this building is a superb tower served by a stone staircase and which gives access to the village square. Along the wall of the fortress, a superb 15th century building is erected on 3 levels, partially furnished. At the other end of the property on the west side: A superb barn made of local stone where agricultural equipment is stored is also to be restored. The castle, steeped in history, is very impressive and captivating, slender and there is a certain serenity.

House with terrace L'Isle-Jourdain (86)

Our local agent Andy Portsmouth offer you, on it’s own idyllic island in the Vienne river - the fourth largest river in France, this fabulous chateau with a rich history dating back over 1000 years. With easy access from the public bridge, there is ample external space for private parking and gardens, whilst the four connected buildings offer 1000m2 of space - a blank canvas for the realisation of your ideas. This is an opportunity to own the iconic centrepiece of a popular small town. In fact, the town itself is named after this château and it’s one time owner Lord Jourdain ('Jordanus de Hisla'), who lived in his castle here around 1080-1115 and reigned over this part of the Vienne, and who collected tolls from the bridge and oversaw the river traffic. The property has also been a fort, a mill, and was once owned by an officer of Napoleon. This could make an absolutely fabulous venue, or retreat, or apartments, or an extraordinary home for someone who wants an exceptional space, history, and a stunning location - all windows have a beautiful view - of the river, of the valley, of the viaduct, of the pretty stone houses and church of this small town. A few minutes walk is all it takes from here to reach the town centre: there are five café-restaurants, two very close-by; plus there’s a supermarket, doctors, dentist, optician, pharmacy, garden centre, and a newly-renovated public swimming pool. There are tennis courts, zip-wires across the river, kayaking, great angling and walking, and a motorracing circuit with classic car events - this is an attractive and interesting environment that draws-in people; there is plenty of demand here for holiday accommodation. From the bridge, you enter through huge 400 year-old wrought-iron gates bearing the initials of previous owners. On your right, a tower from the original chateau has been converted into a characterful one-bedroom holiday gite (43m2), then across the lawn with olive trees and a fountain, steps lead up to the main entrance and to a huge room of 95m2 with bar, open to another large room behind of 81m2 with WC. Plus, a commercial-style kitchen (21m2), an entertainment room (105m2) with stage and gallery - this room then opens onto a raised terrace of 60m with river and valley views on three sides. Also, two more rooms, 30m2 and 35m2, opening to another terrace with an outstanding unspoilt view directly up the river to the viaduct. Below all of this is a basement of a similar size, with windows overlooking the river, creating a very usable space, perhaps for a spa/gym. On the first floor are spaces of 113m2 and 32m2, plus convertible attic spaces on this floor and the next (with staircase) totalling 370m2. Those beautiful roofs were all new in 2016 and have been insulated. The external walls have all been insulated. Attached to the main building (with openings in progress between the two) is the building currently lived-in by the sellers - once part of the original chateau, with coach house added: the upstairs (49m2) is not finished; downstairs you have a kitchen (26m2), bedroom with shower room (19m2), and living room (67m2 plus WC) opening to another beautiful river-facing terrace. There are also garages (58m2 for two vehicles, and 23m2 for one), and a huge workshop of 94m2. Around the beautiful rocky limits of the island, there are four points of access to the river for boats. Most of the interiors need renovaton: the windows, doors, heating and plumbing need replacing, floors, walls and ceilings to restore, and a new septic tank is needed. The new 3 phase electricity transformer is in place to supply the whole building, although currently only the building used by the owners has the electrics installed (on one phase). This is truly an extraordinary property that needs someone with the vision and finance to realise its doubtless huge potential. House with pool and terrace L'Isle-Jourdain (86)

Our local agent Andy Portsmouth offers you this outstanding maison de maître with coach house amongst mature gardens in the centre of the popular and scenic small town of L'Isle Jourdain. Surrounded by 6.5 acres, the house is set well back from the street and is accessed through electric gates, with large trees on either side as you approach the house, coach house, and a 320m2 garage. The front of the property faces on to a wooded area while the rear of the house opens on to the park with a large terrace, gardens, flowerbeds, an ornate fountain and an in-ground 10m x 5m heated swimming pool. The large south-facing terrace, which is not overlooked, is a great place to relax or entertain in total privacy while enjoying views of the gardens and park, and across the valley. The property currently operates as a successful luxury chambres d’hôtes and is the best in the area, welcoming clients from the local motor racing circuit, holidaymakers, people making family visits and guests simply passing through on overnight stays, due to the central and convenient location of L’Isle Jourdain. The property feels very private, despite its town-centre position, with the views from the house and terrace allowing you to feel as though you are in the countryside. However, it is only a two-minute walk through the gardens to the side gates and into the town centre where you will find a range of amenities including restaurants/cafés, a bakery, doctors, dentist, pharmacy, schools, hairdressers and a large supermarket. Inside the house on the ground floor, the wide hallway stretches from the front to the back of the house with doors at either end opening on to the gardens. The elegant living room (44m2) is on one side of the hallway with dining and lounge areas, whilst the spacious traditional French-style kitchen and a small sitting room with log burner, and a WC, are on the other. There is also a 47m2 conservatory which has a high ceiling, double glazing, air conditioning and electric shutters, and wonderful views over the gardens and beyond. The conservatory has its own outside access to the park via steps and a wheelchair ramp. The owners have a restaurant licence 3 (they can sell alcohol to residents). On the first floor, the landing stretches from the front to the back of the house with double doors at either end leading to balconies with views of the woodland and the valley of the river Vienne. This floor boasts three large bedrooms - a master suite with bedroom, huge bathroom (bath, walk-in shower, twin basins), WC and closet, and two further bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom – all beautifully presented. On up the elegant oak staircase to the second floor (where again there is a front-to-back landing) and you will find a bedroom suite with walk-through wardrobe area and large ensuite bathroom with bath, WC and twin basins. Also on this floor there are two very spacious bedrooms and a shower room with WC. There is also access to the loft space via a trapdoor and pull-down ladder. The views from all rooms here are amazing. Beneath the ground floor and conservatory is a spacious and well-kept semi-basement (149m2) accessible by a lift or stairs. This offers access to potential further living accommodation (2 rooms), a boot room with heating, boiler room and laundry, cave (with well) and tank room. Attached to the house, with internal wheelchair access to the house, is a garage with mezzanine, (this could be used as a games room). The house is double-glazed, has central heating and is on mains drainage. The coach house offers considerable potential. There are three apartments in situ – one newly-renovated with wheelchair access, which has an open-plan living area with kitchen plus two bedrooms, WC and shower room, then there are two apartments to renovate. The coach house also contains a large garage with central heating boiler, a wood store and a tool store. There is ample space to create even more apartments in this building. The large two-storey garage/workshop offers 160m2 on each of two floors (both with vehicle access), with large entrances and windows, electricity and water. This has the potential to become further accommodation, to host workshops perhaps, or for showcasing a motor vehicle collection. Beyond the garden a bridge crosses a stream (after which the house is named) to a large field offering potential for a range of uses (a plot of 5600m2), and which has an outline planning certificate for housing, saying that construction is possible and outlining the relevant rules. The park extends to 6.5 acres (2.7 hectares) and so could appeal to clients with equine or other recreational interests. The nearby Vienne river offers two reservoirs (angling, kayaking, zip wires), and stunning scenery with a wide range of regional tourist amenities in under an hour’s drive away. The property and its park are centrally located in France close to major north-south and east-west routes, an hour’s drive from the airports at Poitiers and Limoges and 2½ hours from the airport at Bordeaux. The TGV from Poitiers to Paris takes from 1 hour 25 minutes. It is unusual to find a such a well-located and well-appointed property still with the potential for further custom development in a town centre location. Such properties with so much land rarely come onto the market.
