House Clamecy (58)

A country house with a swimming pool, a guesthouse and a lake, nestled in bucolic grounds that cover thirty hectares, in a hamlet in France’s Nièvre department. The hamlet is a short distance from the local village. It includes a farm and this property. The large country house and the adjacent guesthouse come into view as soon as you step through the property’s main gate. This gate is flanked with pillars bearing heraldic arms. On these pillars, you can read the inscription ‘MDCCCLVI’ (1856). The two buildings stand around a lawn adorned with majestic lime trees. The main dwelling is on the north side. The other house is on the east side. A farm building lies in line with the main house. On the south side, a canal separates this area of buildings from the grounds. A discreet bridge leads onto a track lined with age-old plane trees. A stream snakes through wetlands that lead to a wooded hillside of deciduous trees and conifers. Several paths offer bucolic walks. On the west side, beyond a gate that takes you onto a conifer-lined track, there is a vegetable patch with a greenhouse, a swimming pool with a pool house, and an orchard. They lead to a vast meadow. Beyond this meadow there is a lake that covers more than four hectares. It lies at the bottom of a small valley. The property is entirely enclosed. The whole place is an oasis of calm.

Castle Clamecy (58)

An occupied 18th century chateau surrounded by wooded grounds and a river, in the Nièvre region 2 hours from Paris. Off one of the town's many cobbled alleyways, a double wrought-iron gate serves as the main entrance, framed by a porch with half-timbered walls and beams that bear witness to the age of the property. This leads first to the courtyard of the outbuildings, followed by the main courtyard in front of the main residence. There is another entrance from the street, through a monumental wooden double carriage gate, leading to the courtyard of the main dwelling, embellished by two large white magnolias and other green plants. The chateau comprises a group of old residential buildings, including a street section linked by a wing at right angles that borders the inner courtyard of the main building. The three-storey main building displays classical, symmetrical style and is topped by a slate hip roof with œil-de-bœuf dormers and ridge finials. Its lime-rendered rubble masonry facades are enhanced by dressed stone corner quoins, stringcourses and a triangular pediment with an oeil-de-bœuf in the central section. Seven bays of large-paned windows, fitted with solid or louvered shutters, let the light flood into the residence. Once you have crossed the main courtyard dotted with box hedges and mature rose bushes, a flight of three approach steps leads up to the entrance of the building. The grounds in front of the residence are entirely enclosed by walls and planted with various tall and ornamental species of trees. A small private wooden bridge crosses the water feature and connects to a former orangery and a vegetable patch with a greenhouse. Finally, an opening in the perimeter wall provides direct access to the town.

Castle Clamecy (58)

An impressive 18th century chateau, with garden, outbuilding and 5 hectares of grounds between Puisaye and Morvan in the Nièvre region. Set on the edge of a hamlet, the property is accessed via a small road which leads across a discreet bridge over a stream to the entrance gate. Hidden behind tall trees, the main dwelling can only be made out after entering the garden. Adjacent to the entrance, there is a building containing the caretaker's accommodation, which is extended by a section used for agricultural purposes. A peaceful stream runs through the grounds. Probably owned by local dignitaries from the 15th century onwards, the property was later inhabited by one of Louis XVI's bodyguards. However, the most famous resident was a French Major General during the Revolution and the First Empire, who carried out extensive renovation work.

Castle Vitteaux (21)

A 15th-century medieval chateau and its farm complex to be restored, nestled in the Auxois province of Burgundy. The chateau was built in 1461 at one end of a village nestled in a small valley of a tributary of the River Brenne. The edifice was designed in line with the principles of medieval architecture. It forms a quadrangle, fortified on its east side by two round towers and on its west side by two square towers. The main building and farm complex used to form a closed courtyard, which is today open on its south side. The main dwelling is framed between imposing round defensive towers that have two floors. The highest roof, which was probably once a cone, has been turned into a gabled roof with two gable walls added. There is an arched carriage entrance in the middle of the facade. It is framed between two pilasters. Above it are the two slots of a drawbridge that used to cross a moat, which is now earth-filled. There are also two pavilions at each end of the edifice. The round towers are punctuated with arrow slits on the ground floor and first floor and with rectangular windows with ogee-arch lintels. On the west side, the bases of the two square towers that defend the farm complex follow the slope of the land and have stringcourses marking the top of the slope. They also have arrow slits, like the other towers. Barns close the north and west sides of the complex. Lastly, there are vast cellars. They house a remarkable well with sculpted faces. This well still contains water. It was a vital requirement during sieges.

Castle Auxerre (89)

A long tree-lined driveway leads to this property near Auxerre. Elevated on a moat-formed platform, it was built in the 16th century and later renovated in the 18th century. The estate comprises formal French gardens, wooded areas with centuries-old trees, streams, and ponds. No disturbances are to be noted. The four main buildings, including a fortified pavilion, encircle an elegant square courtyard. Three of them rise above the moat. The entrance to this courtyard is through a porch with traces of a drawbridge, which has withstood various restorations and remains a beautiful relic from the 16th century. It is protected by a large wrought-iron gate. The upscale restoration of the four buildings was done in keeping with the spirit of the place (stone, marble, tapestries, wallpapers from renowned houses) and the highest standards of modern comfort (internet, heat pumps combined with gas boilers, independent room and pavilion air conditioning). The four historic residences boast spacious reception rooms with beautiful fireplaces and bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, featuring refined sanitary elements that provide luxurious independence to each guest. The south facade of the main building opens onto the French gardens, accessible via a stone bridge over the moat. In the center of this extensive garden, a pond has been converted into a pool (heated by a heat pump) with water features and accompanied by a sauna. At the edge of the woods stands a small consecrated chapel. A meticulously cultivated orchard and extensive vegetable garden, designed for complete self-sufficiency, are irrigated by the abundant spring on the estate. At the property entrance, there are outbuildings converted into four accommodations (2 apartments and 2 studios) spread across two buildings restored in the 20th century, equipped with all modern conveniences. Each unit, perfectly isolated from the castle and its pavilions, enjoys complete privacy and private gardens. At the property entrance, an elegant secured garage has been designed to accommodate eight vehicles and provide maintenance facilities (car lift and resin flooring). In its center, there is a spacious exhibition area that will delight collectors of vintage models. The meticulously maintained property is fully secured with a video surveillance system. Detailed description available upon request: 50 pages with photographs, technical details, and descriptions.

House with pool Auxerre (89)

A Napoleonic mansion in tree-dotted grounds nestled in a medieval winegrowing town in Burgundy, two hours from Paris. In 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte returned from his exile on the island of Elba, travelling up to Paris. He stopped off in Burgundy from 17 to 19 March. There he met up with Marshal Ney. His troops bivouacked on the outskirts of this town and on the site of this property. Almost half a century later, in 1854, during the Second French Empire, a family of Parisian magistrates built a town mansion here in a Napoleon III style. This mansion was transformed in 1980 and became a 25-room hotel. Today, each of the 25 hotel rooms here bears the name of a marshal who served under Napoleon I. The old dwelling is made of dressed stone and stands on a large avenue. Its slate mansard roof is punctuated with arched dormers and bull’s-eye windows. The property’s original metal railings still enclose it. Pillars of dressed stone are evenly spaced out along these railings, which stand on a low stone wall. The pedestrian entrance is a metal gate framed between two pillars of dressed stone, each crowned with a cast-iron vase. Beyond this gate, a footpath in the middle of a gravel court leads up to a small flight of stone steps adorned with a pair of Medici vases. Vehicles can enter the property via two other original entrances, which are broader. They are located on both sides of the pedestrian entrance and are framed between brick and stone pillars. A large two-floor caretaker’s house stands beside the outdoor entrance area. Nearby, around 30 cars can be parked in a car park on the property. The mansion’s rear elevation faces the property’s vast enclosed grounds dotted with majestic age-old trees and clusters of flowering plants. There are a few terraces on the grounds and an authentic stone table with old stone benches. This beautiful outdoor space includes a heated swimming pool too. This pool is 10 metres long and 5 metres wide. It is heated with mains gas. Lastly, there is an old greenhouse on the grounds. It is made of wrought iron and needs to be restored.

Property Auxerre (89)

In Burgundy, an hour and ten minutes from Paris, an 18th century mansion house. This mansion house stands in the midst of extensive wooded, enclosed parklands in the middle of the town. Spiked, wrought iron gates open into parklands, laid out in a French formal manner and bordered by old walls, pleasantly covered with wisteria and vines. In front of the residence is a parterre planted with old roses. Various species of tall trees, over a hundred years old, set the tone. Behind the building is a small, medieval vegetable garden, planted with different herbs. Historical background This mansion house was built in 1780 as part of the major urban planning works, including the construction of the town hall and the development of the banks of the river Yonne, that took place in the town in the 18th century. A middle-class home, it stands but a few metres from the political and military decision-making centres and accommodated such illustrious characters as Prince Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orléans, oldest son of King Louis-Philippe. A private ball was held in his honour in the mansion house’s staterooms. This historic property was then lived in by Fernand-Schneider, a great military character, one of whose sons married one of the daughters of Jacques-Chaband-Delmas. The Schneider family remained here until 2010.

House Auxerre (89)

An elegant consular residence and farmhouse with shady grounds, less than 2 hours from Paris in Burgundy. Numerous picturesque villages anchored in the midst of lush countryside set the tone for the area. The property has several entrances around its perimeter. One of these is a metal, automatic double gate that opens onto an inner courtyard with a lawned area. Part of the area is planted with fruit trees - such as apple, cherry, quince, pear and fig - and a gravelled strip for parking. An ancient lime tree stands in front of the main house. The house stands in the centre, where a few boxwood bushes conceal a stone staircase leading to the cellars. Outbuildings adjoin the main dwelling and face rolling countryside. The old entrance features a double spiked gate with two stone pillars on either side. The inner courtyard is enclosed by walls punctuated by large white stone columns, suggesting that this was once a very busy area used as a relay station. The rear facade overlooks a large garden with tall trees, a tennis court and an acacia wood overlooking the property.
