The current premises occupy a neoclassical building, constructed at the end of the 19th century, whose façades feature extensive use of marble construction and decorative elements. Its interior combines traditional masonry construction, finished in stucco, with wooden structures applied to floors, walls, and ceilings. The generality of the coatings and finishes, the profile and design of the carpentry, both exterior in doors, shutters, and windows, and interior in doorways, together form a coherent whole of academic and classical conception.
The building was commissioned by a wealthy businessman of English origin, Robert Reynolds, in the last quarter of the 19th century. The Reynolds family arrived in Portugal in 1820, led by Thomas Reynolds, an English sailor and merchant, settling in Porto and engaging in the wine business. From 1838, the family and their economic interests settled in Alentejo and Spanish Extremadura, focusing on the cork business and later, wine. Having settled in Estremoz from 1850, it was Thomas Reynolds’ second son, Robert, who commissioned the construction of this beautiful neoclassical mansion as the main residence for his wealthy family.
