CastleFougeres (35)

A 16th century manor with outbuildings and 4-hectare grounds, in Ille-et-Vilaine, between Rennes and Mont-Saint-Michel. From the neighbouring town, you can reach the manor by taking a long, straight road lined with hedgerows, which ends in no through road. The entrance to the property is marked by a driveway lined with tall oak and chestnut trees, leading into a courtyard where the manor and its outbuildings stand. With north and south facing façades, the two-storey building topped by an attic and standing atop two cellars was built in the second half of the 16th century. It has a quadrangular layout and floor-space of approximately 250 m². A belt course runs along its façades made of rough-hewn blocks of granite. A two-sided slate gabled roof sits atop the central part of the manor while the two adjoining towers on the southeast and southwest corners are crowned by conical roofs. A modillon cornice runs around the entire roof.
The main, central part of the building is rounded off by a gabled dormer in the roof which allows the attic to be bathed in light. Typical 16th century decorative elements such as kale leaf shaped crockets, an accolade and pinnacles topped with fleurons adorn the dormer. The façades are dotted with large windows with small panes. The casing of some of these windows is made of carved ashlar. On the ground floor, one of them boasts a lintel in the form of an accolade whilst another bears a coat of arms that can no longer be made out today. To the rear, there are three small gable dormers in the roof.
The outbuildings stand to the southeast of the manor and are made up of two adjoined buildings, one of which is used as a holiday cottage and the other as a store. A slate roofed hangar with wood siding is set at a right angle to these two buildings.
