Castle Beaune (21)

In Burgundy, near Beaune and its vineyards, a 19th century chateau with 17th and 18th century outbuildings and a 4 ha wooded park. You have to leave the main road to discover the little village which stretches languidly along a street lined with discreet properties. Captivated by the delightful scenery, visitors often pass the chateau without noticing it, as the setting is very understated. Its surrounding wall is enhanced by a high gate covered with holly, laurel and lilac. A modest central gate opens onto a gravel courtyard with two unevenly shaped lawns in the centre, separated by paving stones. The castle reveals only part of its facade, its discreet double-leaf entrance door is sheltered under a small canopy. The eye is inevitably drawn to the large 18th century farmhouse covered with an abundance of small flat tiles. The building, which bears witness to the winegrowing vocation of the site, comprises three ground floor cellars that have contributed to the reputation of a family of Burgundian merchants for two centuries. The 19th century chateau, next to the cellars, was probably built on the foundations of the 16th century castle which had been completely dismantled. Designed as a prestigious and pleasurable residence, the reception rooms face the park, exposed to the light of the setting sun with originally a view of the distant hillsides. A wide passageway, clear of the foliage on the left, provides a link between the courtyard and the park, the 17th century lodge and the barn. From the village, a narrow road running alongside the property allows direct access to the lodge via a small gate. Turning around, the chateau reveals its clear and symmetrical facade with an elegant canopy. The landscaped park, which could be inspired by Joseph Addison, majestically unfolds its greenery and tall trees, letting the springs, sometimes channelled by narrow canals, freely overflow onto the lawn. It is not uncommon to see herons, grey cranes and wild ducks frolicking on these natural mirrors of water. Although it is adjacent to large buildings that look like old outbuildings, the property is well hidden from view, protected by dry stone walls, streams, tall trees and coppice without being completely enclosed.

Castle Vitteaux (21)

A 15th-century medieval chateau and its farm complex to be restored, nestled in the Auxois province of Burgundy. The chateau was built in 1461 at one end of a village nestled in a small valley of a tributary of the River Brenne. The edifice was designed in line with the principles of medieval architecture. It forms a quadrangle, fortified on its east side by two round towers and on its west side by two square towers. The main building and farm complex used to form a closed courtyard, which is today open on its south side. The main dwelling is framed between imposing round defensive towers that have two floors. The highest roof, which was probably once a cone, has been turned into a gabled roof with two gable walls added. There is an arched carriage entrance in the middle of the facade. It is framed between two pilasters. Above it are the two slots of a drawbridge that used to cross a moat, which is now earth-filled. There are also two pavilions at each end of the edifice. The round towers are punctuated with arrow slits on the ground floor and first floor and with rectangular windows with ogee-arch lintels. On the west side, the bases of the two square towers that defend the farm complex follow the slope of the land and have stringcourses marking the top of the slope. They also have arrow slits, like the other towers. Barns close the north and west sides of the complex. Lastly, there are vast cellars. They house a remarkable well with sculpted faces. This well still contains water. It was a vital requirement during sieges.

Castle Besançon (25)

A chateau listed as a historical monument with outhouses, an English-style garden and an orchard, nestled in a village between Besançon and Dole in France’s beautiful Jura area. On the main road into the village, you go past a gate before you get to the village. This wooden gate, the property’s entrance, is framed between two stone columns and crowned with a triangular pediment. Beyond it, the chateau, built in the 18th century, soon comes into view, as does its English-style garden. A gravel drive runs past a farm building made of stone. A series of wooden doors set in stone surrounds and semicircular arches lead inside this outhouse. The chateau, designed in a Directoire style, has a ground floor, a first floor, a second floor and a roof space. A hipped slate roof crowns the edifice. The facade features a large sculpted triangular pediment. Three chimney stacks rise up from the roof. A balcony on the first floor protrudes over the main entrance, which is made up of three wooden doors set in stone columns and segmental arches. Two wings were added to the main section in the 19th century. A hexagonal tower made of dressed stone, capped with a hexagonal roof, adjoins the rear elevation. Two outhouses stand behind the chateau: a former kitchen, which has kept its imposing fireplace, and a farming building for storage. In an enclosure wall, there is a wooden gate that leads out into a village street. Another gate takes you to the church that neighbours the property. A former caretaker’s house, which adjoins the farm building, also has a separate street entrance. The English-style garden in front of the chateau is dotted with trees and rose bushes. There is also a spring and a stream, which flows to a pond. You can follow a path to walk all the way around the garden. An orchard and a meadow complete the grounds. Fields and meadows edged by the River Doubs extend around the grounds. The elevations and roofs of the chateau and outhouses, the main staircase in the chateau, the rockery of the court fountain, the garden with its stream, pond and enclosing walls, and the east and north gates have been listed as historical monuments since 1992.

Listed castle Besançon (25)

Ideally located about 20' from the TGV station, the A36 motorway and Besançon, we invite you to become the new lovers of a unique building, witness to history. It will seduce you with its approximately 320sqm, its pretty land of 26.32 ares (2632sqm) and its medieval remains, some of which are classified as historical monuments. Timeless, this 13th century residence, nestled on the old road which led from Besançon to Dijon, was the passage where the toll required to enter the lands of the lordship was paid. Built on a rock, this fortress stands proudly in the local countryside and offers a very privileged setting. Today, the castle only displays part of its original architecture. It consists of the formerly open square tower and a main building, a former main building. The two parts are connected by a curtain wall which reveals the traces of the drawbridge once in place. The habitable part takes place in the main building, developing to date 163sqm of living space supplemented by nearly 200sqm to be interpreted. It has been completely renovated in the last 20 years to give it comfort and authenticity. You will have to pass through the fortified oak entrance door to access the octagonal tower housing the majestic staircase which will take you to the 3 levels. First made of cut stone as a witness to history, this staircase extends with a part completely restored in wood according to the specifications of the architect of Bâtiments de France. The ground floor consists of a charming apartment including a bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. A beautiful space of more than 30sqm benefits from a double door opening onto the courtyard and can be used for different purposes, from the reception room to the games room, from the summer kitchen to the winter living room. On the 1st level, wait delightfully in the reception lounge before discovering a very bright living space thanks to its triple orientations and its numerous openings onto the surrounding nature. In the spirit of sharing, this room includes an office area, a living room and a dining room. The semi-open kitchen is directly attached to it. Via an internal staircase, you access the sleeping area which consists of 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry/dressing room area. At the top of the spiral staircase, pass in front of the Renaissance-style baluster and access the covered walkway which will lead you to the square tower. Distributed over 4 levels and structured with one room per floor, the square tower is the archetype of the defensive building of the medieval period. If the ground floor is devoted to storage with its semi-circular vaulted cellar, the other 3 levels certainly had their own use: a room useful for everyday use with its Gothic fireplace, an old "great room" and a stately bedroom. Several restoration campaigns have allowed this keep to regain its colors: a recovery of the masonry structures, a restoration of the frame and the roof, the restoration of the Gothic fireplaces, the reinforcement of the upper windows of the 3rd floor, the replacement of stained glass windows or the consolidation of wooden floors. A rare medieval testimony still intact in the Doubs, this residence will welcome you in a setting bringing serenity and authenticity. ENERGY CLASS: D / CLIMATE CLASS: B.
