A rare and wonderful opportunity to become the next custodian of a unique 800 year old “French Castle”, complete with vaulted ceilings, original stone staircase, flagstone floors, oak paneled reception rooms and renaissance mullion windows. This magnificent, entirely private estate sits in 2.4 hectares (approx. 6 acres) of gardens and woods, bordering a brook, and includes the 10 bedroom Château, three guest cottages, each with their own private garden, a former stable block, a beautiful Orangery, requiring renovation, and several other substantial outbuildings.
Please see land map to the right under the More Options column.
The estate offers enormous potential for development as a commercial venue, to host seminars, weddings or any business where additional accommodation is required within a private and peaceful environment. The market town of Orthez and the historical capitol of the Bearn, Pau can be reached in 10 minutes and 25 minutes. Both towns provide excellent transport links; motorway, airport and TGV train.
This enchanting ensemble of buildings has a long and interesting history, having survived the time from the War of the Crusades to present day. Engraved into one particular stone is the year 1080 with a Knight’s Cross, evidence surely of the presence of the European Christians passing through during their voyage to regain the Holy Lands. The Chateau’s Coat of Arms, as seen in the stain glass window on the main staircase, under its stone vaulted ceilings, belongs to the Peyrer family, who were confidants and musketeers to the king. Jean-Armand du Peyrer, the Comte de Trèville, was fictionalized under the name Monsieur de Trèville in Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Three Musketeers. The Peyrer family’s second home, displaying the same family crest, can be found opposite the Chateau de Pau. The stone Renaissance mullion windows in this chateau replicate the ones seen in the Chateau de Pau, which was birthplace to Henri IV, who became King of France in 1589.
The Chateau is located 25 minutes west of Pau. Pau airport 30 minutes; Tarbes / Lourdes airport 45 minutes; Biarritz airport 45 minutes; Toulouse airport 2 hours.
