The merchant traded products from India and even participated in Vasco da Gama's second fleet. His son, Cosmo, also held various positions in India, such as captain-major during the siege of Chaul. In 1571 and again in 1598, he was granted the captaincies of Sofala and Diu. In the 17th century, the property came under the ownership of the Counts of Soure, still descendants of the Lafetás. On December 20, 1879, it was acquired by Sir Francis Cook, a wealthy English merchant, art collector, and the first Viscount of Monserrate, the name of the estate he bought in 1855, which was very close, considering that the old property was more extensive.
