A fortified watermill with a 12th-century tower, nestled in the River Tolzac valley in France’s Lot-et-Garonne department. From the road, the edifice’s gable end can be seen emerging ever so slightly from the thick vegetation around it. But to properly admire the architecture of this beautiful watermill, its medieval tower and its adjoining annexe, you have to leave the road, drive along a river with a strip of lawn on your other side, then park in a gravelled space. At first glance, you see an intriguing mix of structures made of pointed rubble stone and brick with many windows, beneath roofs of monk-and-nun tiling. The river flows through two stone arches that support the watermill from underneath. Behind, a square tower crowned with a pyramidal roof of flat tiles overlooks the whole complex. Lawns surround the buildings and edge the steep-banked river. At the back, an iron footbridge crosses the stream and leads to a meadow that stretches north-west beyond leafy trees.
