In the Eure Valley, near to Maintenon, a 19th century chateau and its outbuildings.
This property is set in the Royal Eure Valley, with its outstanding diversity and scenery. The historic town of Maintenon, 5 km away, is ideal for combining town and country, just 50 minutes from Paris-Montparnasse train station.
Nearby, the wealth of heritage and economic dynamism of the towns of Rambouillet and Chartres contribute to the region’s interest.
This estate, protected from all visual and audible nuisances, extends over ten continuous hectares of parklands and woods. It also includes a lake. Once through the entrance gates, a long, tree-lined driveway provides glimpses of several outbuildings. A little further away, old moats, vestiges of an 18th century chateau, delimit a large esplanade on which stands the current residence, constructed in 1835. Rectangular in shape and built over a basement, spanning approx. 125 m², the building spans a floor surface area of approx. 650 m². It is flanked by two wings set at right angles and comprises three levels, including a converted attic floor, topped with a slate roof, featuring roof dormers.
The chateauThe current chateau was constructed in 1835 following the destruction of a first chateau, belonging to the Count of Morville, minister of overseas affairs for Louis XV, itself constructed on the ruins of a 16th century chateau. After having accommodated the French Navy’s secret headquarters during the Second World War, the estate became home to celebrities.
Completely renovated in 1982, the internal flooring was replaced with concrete floors, the roofs and woodwork were replaced and the main facade re-rendered in 2012.
The classical facades are symmetrically laid out. Although the windows on the ground floor are rectangular, those upstairs are arched. The two-tone, sandy-coloured rendering enhances the quoins as well as all the contour and profile. Each facade features numerous openings, fitted with slatted, wooden shutters.
A wide gravel driveway runs alongside the front facade. On the south side, reached via a few steps, a vast, porch terrace provides access to the reception rooms overlooking the parklands with views of the lake in the background.
Ground floor
The reception rooms, spanning a total floor surface area of approx. 180 m², comprise a large living room, featuring a stone fireplace and a marble floor, a room laid out as a library and another room in use as a study, with oak wood parquet flooring. These three, extremely bright rooms open on to the terrace and intercommunicate via double oak wood doors, matching the wooden panelling in the lounge and the wooden shelves in the library.
A kitchen, with a back door, takes up a wing in the chateau. It comprises a food preparation area as well as an eating area.
Several secondary rooms are reached via a wide corridor.
First floor
The main stairway leads to five bedrooms, two bathrooms, one of which is fitted with a hammam, three toilets and two dressing rooms.
This level includes three additional bedrooms, two of which have bathrooms and toilets, a bathroom and a separate shower room.
The entire space in each wing has been preserved and converted.
The caretaker’s cottage, near to the chateau entrance, comprises a lounge, a kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a toilet and an independent studio flat.
Two outbuildings stand nearer to the chateau. One houses stables, a 3-car garage and a heated tack room, with a large studio flat upstairs; the other comprises a storage area and a space able to take two cars.
The parklands
The landscaped parklands, spanning four hectares, create a harmonious setting between the buildings and the vast lawns, planted with copses and outstanding trees. A little way away from the chateau and reached via different pathways are …
