An original restoration chosen for a 17th century house by an antique dealer 20 minutes to the north of Tours.
This property is in the Loir Valley, in the Gâtine Tourangelle region, some 20 km from Tours and near to many exceptional sites, in a market town with narrow picturesque streets and a wealth of history.
This region features gently undulating landscapes where the countryside, sprinkled with spinneys, is crossed by streams, lined with long rows of trees.
An impressive local historic heritage is to be randomly found along the roads and narrow streets as well as around the bends of country lanes and secondary roads.
The surrounding countryside is dotted here and there with chateaux or manor houses, towers or turrets, private or model farms, water mills and other ruins.
The area is quite simply steeped in charm and character.
Heritage here is as much religious as it is civil with abbeys, collegiate and ordinary churches, chateaux, farms or mills, manor and village houses.
The market town, dating from the 6th century, became a châtellenie (an officially recognised castle and its land) as of the 14th century, then a provostship, followed by a fiefdom.
The village church illustrates various eras between the 12th and the 19th centuries. It includes several outstanding stained glass windows and houses some astonishing statues.
Other interesting buildings are to be found nearby such as a presbytery or a smooth-dressed chapel and, a little further away, a house with a salt loft.
Not forgetting a belvedere or a wash-house, a cave or a wayside cross.
On the outskirts of the market town, near to a crossroads, wide double metal gates provide access to a peaceful property, concealed behind an old stone wall. Once through the gates, a large, interior, wooded and grassy courtyard comes into view with a delightful little barn at the end and on the right-hand side. A section of the house running along the left-hand side, features two raised entrances and their steps, one of which, with a double flight of steps and a porch way, forms the main entrance. Straight on, a stone wall includes an opening with a gate.
A superb grassy area, on the other side, stretches over approx. 700 m². Enhanced with a few trees, it is enclosed by hedges and adorned with an old stone well in its centre. A stone garden shed or storage area is on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side, bordering a terrace, is the other section of the house, set at right angles to the first section.
The village houseThis village house has two flights of stone steps and two entrances, all on the same side. The first, secondary flight goes to a self-contained dwelling, the second leads to the main house via a stone porch way and double wooden doors. Its functional layout provides for plenty of space and independence with some wonderful reception rooms, opening all on a level on to an enclosed, attractive, south-facing garden, and six bedrooms, two of which are on the ground floor.
Ground floor
A wide corridor, with moulding and mosaic flooring, provides access, left, to the possibly independent dwelling, straight on, to a wooden stairway leading upstairs, followed by a fully fitted kitchen behind a glazed door and, right, to a vestibule, with parquet flooring and a cloakroom. On the right-hand side of said vestibule is a bathroom and toilet, with polished concrete floors. These precede a bedroom, with parquet flooring, and another bedroom, opening on to the garden.
A little further on down the corridor is another door to the tiled kitchen and, on the left-hand side, a glazed door opening on to a little interior, wooded courtyard, with a wooden terrace.
These are followed by the reception rooms. First, a dining room, with parquet flooring and a marble fireplace, has double glazed doors opening on to the terrace and the garden. Then, …
