ManorMontpon-Ménestérol (24) Price : $1,594,900
Between Périgueux and Bordeaux, overlooking its 6 5 hectares of grounds, an 18th-century, restored chartreuse house, its guesthouse and outbuildings. On a no-through road located near a village, past a monumental gate, a dirt track bordered by a stream leads to the different buildings grouped on either side of a vast rectangular courtyard. The terreplein of approximately 1 hectare overlooks land composed of fields and woods, which extend towards the east and south until a pond, while the view encompasses only the trees and their summits, which are outlined against the sky. The interior courtyard is enclosed by a high stone wall to the west and accessible via two gates: the main entrance, to the east, is marked by a wrought-iron gate framed by two carved stone pillars, while the second entrance is located to the north, between the guesthouse and the industrial building.
Lastly, the chartreuse house and its extensions, slightly offset, enclose the courtyard to the south and extend past it with an imposing square dovecote rebuilt entirely identical to the original.
The current chartreuse house was, in all likelihood, built on the foundations of a former stronghold surrounded by moats, destroyed in the 16th century by Protestant troops. It is composed of a central one-storey building topped with a gabled barrel tile roof and framed by two two-storey pavilions crowned with hipped flat tile roofs. On each side is a wing covered by a Mansard roof and adorned with rounded dormer windows. While the whole is built out of rubble stone with ashlar stone frames for the windows and doors as well as the corner stones, the first floor of the western pavilion is characterised by a timber-framed structure filled in with flat bricks and binder.
