In the Puisaye region, 90 minutes from the French capital, an old, renovated farm surrounded by 3 ha of land.
This house is in Puisaye, a lively region with a good tourist trade. These completely rural surroundings feature a diversity of landscapes and colours as well as a wealth of heritage. The village next to the estate is home to the “Estivales en Puisaye-Forterre”, a French classical music festival. An original composition of an operetta or an opera is performed there every year. This property, typical of its region, is near to the shops. A train station, 20 minutes away, provides direct links to Paris-Bercy.
This property was mentioned several times in local tales and legends written in the 19th century. The estate allegedly featured a tall oak tree, beneath which fairies supposedly danced all night in order to achieve miracles and some have had their dreams come true.
Wooden gates open on to a wide driveway, bordered on one side by an oak forest and, on the other by boxwood. The house, at the end, has a clear view over the surrounding countryside.
A gravel parterre around the house is used for parking cars. Decorative, regional ceramic pots are set out in front of the facade. Opposite, a small boat awaits clement weather to go for an outing on the lake. A wooden bench, on the waterside, is but an invitation to sit and contemplate the pastoral landscape. A bridle path crosses the parklands, planted with trees over a hundred years old.
A little further away, a swimming pool, lined with blue mosaic tiles, is accompanied by its pool-house. An old farm shed facing it is now used as a covered terrace or garden shed. A stone well behind the house still provides water.
The houseThis property was renovated in strict keeping with regional traditions. It spans two levels. The light-coloured, lime-rendered facade features numerous basket-handle arched, small-paned windows, with pink brick window sills and solid wood, green shutters, all completely redone. Two glazed doors, one the front door and the other opening directly into the kitchen, have similar framing.
A large opening, glazed with large panes, has a basket-handle arch with a brick voussoir and features a fan-shaped tympanum. At the end of the house, a lean-to houses two sheds with two low vertical openings.
A creeper runs along the house’s string course. The roof, covered with traditional tiles, has been redone. Four hanging roof dormers let copious amounts of light into the second level.
Behind the residence, a roof adjoining the house and sloping down over a terrace provides shelter from inclement weather and forms a summer eating area.
Ground floor
A door, glazed with small panes, opens directly into a vast, bright room, with Burgundy stone floor tiles and old, exposed oak wood ceiling beams that have been well looked after.
Several rooms, comprising a lounge and three bedrooms, are not occupied and await renovation.
A large living room is steeped in light courtesy of its many openings under a cathedral ceiling. The mantel and jambs of the fireplace are made of Burgundy stone. Stone paving extends the hearth in front of the fireplace. The brick back plate is reminiscent of the external framing around the openings.
A corridor leads to an extremely functional kitchen that opens on to the parklands via a glazed door. A back kitchen, opposite the kitchen, is used as a pantry.
These are followed by a first, very bright bedroom, with a double window that overlooks the parklands and a second, bigger bedroom, with a lounge area and an open-hearth, brick fireplace. Both bedrooms have regional sandstone floor tiles.
Two wooden stairways in the lounge provide access upstairs.
First floor
Two mezzanines face one another. A study is laid out on the first one. Decorative wooden railings delimit the room which looks down on to the …
