House with pool Bordeaux (33)

A 19th-century family house with garden and tree-lined swimming pool near Bordeaux. Close to the church, a quiet street leads to the former winery, now converted into a dwelling. The one-way street is only used by local residents. A gravel forecourt providing vehicle parking space runs alongside the original building and its extension. This 19th century two-storey building is of dressed stone. The hipped roof is clad with monk-and-nun tiles and bordered by a cornice of shortened tiles. A double flight of outdoor stairs, flanked on either side by two large cypress trees, leads up to the first floor entrance door in the gable wall. It is framed by pilasters and topped by a semi-circular glass transom divided into four identical triangles. In front of the entrance is a small terrace with a white-painted metal balustrade, which tops an extension with an arched window on the garden level. A stone frieze with geometric motifs above the door completes the decor. The large-paned windows have louvered or plain wooden shutters. Beyond the building and its impressive facade, typical of the Gironde region, there is a garden of around 1,700 m², divided into several areas. On one side of the house, a small path provides access from the street to the flower-filled, lawned garden. In front of the main building is a large, south-facing swimming pool, bordered by shrubs. Neither the grounds nor the house are overlooked.

House with pool Montpellier (34)

A 19th century village house with outbuildings and protected garden of 2,300 m² in the Hérault valley. Just a stone's throw from the main square, on the northern side of a street in the village centre, the house presents a sober facade: rendered in white, the two-storey elevation has five rectangular windows with green-painted wooden shutters and a double entrance door featuring transoms and central glazed panels protected by cast-iron grilles. The house sits on the edge of extensive rectangular grounds of more than 2,300 m². Three buildings stand on its eastern side, surrounding a central gravel courtyard with an impressive plane mulberry tree. To the south, the two-storey main dwelling has an L-shaped layout and a gable roof with monk-and-nun tiles. It shares a summer kitchen with an outbuilding set at right angles that has been converted into a guest house. Bordering the east side of the property, this is extended to the north by a barn accessed from the street, which connects with a former wine storehouse that is also L-shaped. The western part of the property features a garden encircled by a stone wall in a very good state of repair. It comprises two distinct areas: one is shady, where abundant trees and plants provide the west wing with an oasis of freshness that is particularly appreciated in summer; the other, laid to lawn, includes a large, secure swimming pool surrounded by flagstones.

Vineyard with pool Bergerac (24)

A 19th century château and 111 hectares of land in the Bergerac vineyards and the Dordogne valley, in the heart of purple Périgord. Accessible via a small winding road at the top of a hill inhabited for 3,000 years and surrounded by rolling vineyards, the estate is a large family winegrowing estate. It consists of a manor house built in the mid-19th century and farm buildings with which it forms a courtyard. There is a winery for making white and rosé wines, a winery for red wines and a building with a tasting room, reception and offices. Below, an agricultural hangar is used for equipment maintenance, while on the opposite slope, a recently constructed building is used for packaging, storing and shipping out bottles. After the house, protected by old oak trees, a garden overlooks a swimming pool hidden in the slope that faces the setting sun and offers a view of the valley over 50 km away.

House with pool Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye (89)

A country house in lush grounds in France’s Yonne department in Burgundy, two hours from Paris. Before you reach the dwelling, several sweeping views come into view: you can admire undulating countryside stretching to the horizon. A gate flanked with two stone pillars leads into a vast court where cars can be parked. A path dotted with plants runs along the house’s facade. There are two stone wells beside the dwelling and old outdoor stairs climb up on one side of the building. Extensive tree-dotted grounds lie behind the house. Open-air meals can be enjoyed on a broad terrace. This terrace is tiled and it adjoins the house’s rear face. Old stone benches stand here and there and troughs that have been turned into planters embellish the garden. Trees of several species offer welcome shade in the summer. An above-ground swimming pool adorned with old stones blends into the scenery. A pavilion stands opposite the house. Flowerbeds embellish this rural backdrop and fill it with their fragrance.

House with pool Le Thoronet (83)

A former 18th century farmstead with inner courtyard in a peaceful hamlet near Le Thoronet. A small country road leads up to the hamlet, perched at the top of a hill. It ends in a circular alleyway bordered by stone houses with the property at its centre. The former 18th-century farmstead comprises three adjoining buildings, with single- or double-pitched monk-and-nun tiled roofs and stone walls rendered in light pink. The various two-storey buildings form a rectangle around an inner stone courtyard providing access to all the entrance doors. The mostly rectangular windows are fairly evenly spaced and protected by white-painted, partly louvred shutters. A garden of approx. 100 m² stretching along the full width of the frontage separates the west-facing main building from the alleyway. A central porch provides access from here to the courtyard. There are also two other ways into the courtyard: one from the south via an external staircase, and one from the ground floor. A stone’s throw from the buildings, just across the alleyway, a plot of around 5,000 m², mainly planted with olive trees, and a swimming pool complete the property.

House with pool Tarascon (13)

A 17th-century convent building converted into a house with courtyard garden, swimming pool, independent studio flat and panoramic views in Tarascon. The house is in the immediate vicinity of one of the city's most emblematic religious monuments: the “Chapelle de la Persévérance”. The facade of this place of worship is an iconic example of Baroque architecture, with its segmental arch portal, framed by two pilasters with Ionic capitals featuring garlands of flowers and an entablature with a three-sided architrave, frieze and modillion cornice. The house and its outbuildings, directly abutting the chapel, leave little doubt as to its original use as a convent. Indeed, the house still bears some traces of its original vocation, in particular the decorative motifs of the ground floor vaults. Founded in 1677 as a home for 'girls of ill repute', the chapel and its associated establishment were entrusted to the care of the Sisters of Notre-Dame du Refuge. Like most establishments of this type, created under the royal “in commendam” system, this umpteenth 'convent for repentant girls' was a resounding moral failure and soon became a notorious 'place of perdition'. It took barely half a century for it to evolve from a convent to a brothel. So much so, in fact, that this highly conspicuous place was forced to close by royal decree on the accession of Louis XVI in 1774, a good fifteen years before the Revolution. In 1803, under the First Empire, the modest convent buildings were sold as national property destined to be used as stables. Some of these buildings remain part of the present-day property. As for the chapel, it was used for the catechism known as 'perseverance', an in-depth teaching of the scriptures that children used to follow after their solemn communion - a history to which its current name bears witness. Today, contemporary art exhibitions are held here throughout the year, providing a rare opportunity to visit the church and admire its rich Baroque decor.

Mill 14

Mill Dourdan (91)

A spacious family residence with swimming pool and mill set in 9 ha of meadows and woods in the Orge valley, 1 hour from Paris. Situated on the banks of the River Orge, the unoverlooked property is accessed via a small road only used by local residents. At the front, the first gate opens onto a vast gravel area with parking space for several vehicles. A cobblestone path leads to the building's main entrance. Originally part of an old farmhouse, it has been sympathetically restored. A little further on, behind the residence, the impressive silhouette of the mill can be made out, now devoid of its paddle wheel, which was once powered by the River Orge. Vast and partly inhabited, it still offers considerable potential for development. At the end of the cul-de-sac, a second gate in line with the mill serves the property from the rear.

Bastide 15

Bastide Entrecasteaux (83)

A 1930s traditional country house and its grounds of 1 ha in a prominent position in the Moyen-Var region. From the centre of the village, a main road winds its way along the river to the bottom of the valley. After approx. 800 m, a small tarmac road leads upwards to a lovely view over the valley. The property is on the left-hand side of the hill. Past the impressive wrought iron gate, there is access to a car park for around ten vehicles at the rear of the property, hidden away from the house. There is a garage on the car park and another one outside the premises, just in front of the entrance gate. The property comprises roughly 1 ha of terraced grounds. Mostly situated on the south side and above the valley, the grounds cannot be seen from the entrance and are only revealed at the foot of the house with its typical Provence colours. A solid, long covered terrace, which runs along the ground floor of the country house, provides optimum sunshine whatever the season. Below, a swimming pool has been installed on the highest level of the terraced garden. The building, mainly of three levels, is well balanced thanks to its great length, stretching from east to west. Each level has four arched openings, with French windows on the ground floor, small-paned windows on the upper floors, and semi-louvered shutters. The eastern end is topped by an additional storey, enhancing the impressive overall appearance of the building. Two balconies on the front elevation offer wonderful views from the first floor. Finally, a 2016 ground-floor extension, which houses a kitchen featuring large windows and doors, protrudes from the front of the 1930s building. The facades are rendered in pink ochre, and the shutters are painted light blue. The monk-and-nun tile gable roof is emphasised by a two-row Provençal frieze.
