Castle Nersac (16)

A 17th century chateau and its terraces registered as historical monuments, outbuildings, parkland and underground spring, set in 8 hectares of grounds overlooking the Charente valley. From the main road to the south, a large driveway lined with chestnut trees leads to the property gates, to the left of an L-shaped outbuilding to the north-west. A swimming pool at its northern end is protected by a walled enclosure, which extends from the outbuilding to the chateau moat, where it becomes a retaining wall. To the right of the outbuilding, an avenue of gnarled hornbeams crosses the grassy areas where fruit trees have been planted. There are a dovecote and a communal oven a few metres further on in the direction of the chateau. The main building, which is reached by going less than 50 m across the grounds, overlooks the River Charente. It is in an L-shape, which opens onto the sunlit valley it overlooks. Its two wings, framed by dry moats to the east and west, are bordered by terraces above, with the eastern one, which juts out towards the valley, featuring high arches running the entire length of the ground. The west wing, meanwhile, looks as if it is standing on a rock at its end, and the balustrade of the terrace closes off the courtyard on the lower level facing the River Charente, which flows around 300 m below. The chateau walls are crowned with crenellations scalloped on machicolations. The low-sloped canal tile roof is concealed by battlements and the ends of the gutters are in the shape of cannon mouths. The balustrade, at the edge of the dry moat which the entrance to the residence is above, is only just visible. Beyond this, as you go down towards the west, a house facing the stream stands on the hillside. Moors and coppices stretch out towards the river. Finally, beyond the parkland to the west, grassed areas adjoin the woods on the edge of the property.

Manor Riberac (24)

A seventeenth-century country home with a guesthouse in walled grounds that cover one hectare in a hamlet in France’s Périgord Vert area, near the town of Ribérac. The property looks down over a valley. It lies in the heart of a hamlet and covers roughly one hectare on a hilltop plateau. The country house stands in the middle of grounds that are entirely enclosed with stone walls. The whole building forms a U shape. It is an imposing dwelling from the end of the seventeenth century. Its enclosed inner courtyard has a water tank and a remarkable ago-old lime tree that towers in the centre. A central pavilion stands out on a long dual-aspect section that runs from north to south. This pavilion is crowned with a square dovecote and a mansard slate roof. A carriage archway leads through it into the inner courtyard. This central pavilion lies between two very different L-shaped sections. On the south side of the carriage entrance, there is the main house, which is made up of three parts. One end of the long section with the carriage archway and mansard roof joins the main building at a right angle. This main building has a semibasement, walls that are taller than the rest of the edifice and a roof with a mansard end. At this building’s gable end, there is an older section that also has a semibasement. Monk-and-nun tiling covers its three-slope hipped roof, which is lower than the rest of the house’s roofing. On the opposite side of the inner courtyard, outbuildings stretch from west to east. This wing has been converted into a gîte. A well forms a junction with a barn beneath a mansard roof, which is well balanced with the central pavilion and the main house. English-style grounds dotted with flowers and trees extend all around the edifice. Low dry-stone walls divide the grounds into different spaces that include a swimming pool, an orchard, a terrace and gardens.

House with garden Yviers (16)

This property exudes so much peace and love that yours truly almost chose to stay there. The lady of the house is a widely appreciated and loved folk singer and comedienne who can recall wonderful memories of her collaboration with John Lodge and Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues (Nights in White Satin, Question,. ) , her UK tour with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (Sherry, Big girls don't cry) , her meeting with Bob Dylan (THE Bob Dylan!) at Albert Hall, where she got him to sign a Fender Folk guitar and then auction it off for charity, her performances for the British troops, and so on, and so on.... But let's talk about the property : Tucked away at the end of a quiet hamlet, it accommodates a spacious living space with double patio doors giving access to the leafy south-facing terrace that might have inspired Monet and thus recalls the nickname of our beloved South Charente : the Tuscany of France! From the living room, one goes via the TV room to the kitchen and 3 ground-floor rooms and the veranda or to the 3 other bedrooms on the first floor. In the wooded garden we find 2 garages of which at least one is asking to serve as additional guest accommodation. Double glazing, a good septic tank and electric central heating complemented by wood-burning stoves provide all the necessary comfort through all seasons. In short : a well hidden and concealed gem now in need of the next enjoyer with or without musical aspirations.
