House Uzès (30)

An 18th century village house and its patio in the midst of a biosphere reserve between Avignon and Nîmes. Built around 1750 in the shade of the southern wing of the impressive parish church, on the very site that was once the priest’s garden, this house is now in the historic centre of a quiet Occitan village, with about 1,000 inhabitants. Enclosed by sufficient lush vegetation to temper the stone surroundings of the village centre, this house spans two levels, topped with attic space which could be converted. It has two different entrances: one on the south side, isolated by its own patio off a little-used pedestrian street; and the other, with a semi-circular arch, opening east on to a no-through side road that leads to the church. The southern facade overlooking the patio was constructed from a harmonious mixture of shellstone and an ochre-coloured stone from Vers quarries, the very same that were used by the Romans for the construction of the neighbouring Pont-du-Gard; its facing reflects regular, plain, rectangular stone laid with staggered pointing. The shellstone on the northern facade, which borders the church, is bonded in a more rustic manner and covered with a yellow ochre-coloured rendering. The shady patio is planted with miscellaneous local, fragrant species such as jasmine, honeysuckle and saritea. As the hours pass, light and shade fight over the changing colours of this small area, once a modest courtyard and now a little, lush village garden, its plants pleasantly climbing the four walls protecting the house.

Farmhouse Uzès (30)

A 17th century farmhouse in the heart of the Gard Garrigues, a precious testimony to centuries of pastoral life. The various buildings, with their thick limestone walls, are part of a series of edifices that were erected starting in the 17th century. They surround a courtyard, a space which links and protects the different farm activities. Called a 'barn' in the 18th century, this agricultural building consisted of a single structure to the north and an elevation at right angles to the east. Today, only four massive stone pillars remain, distributed around the courtyard. The development of the other two wings still standing today had to wait until the 19th century, when the cultivation of mulberry trees - of which fine specimens remain in the park - developed. At that time, silkworm breeding was at its peak, until a devastating epidemic, pepper disease, ravaged most of the farms in the Gard. The architectural style of the eastern wing presents all the typical characteristics of a silkworm farm: a long, narrow and tall building, two storeys high, with small regular openings and a gable roof, with a chimney for the ventilation and heating necessary for the growth of the 'Magnans” (greedy silkworms). The second wing on the western side was built for the staff who were required to live on the premises. The windows, which are larger in size, receive generous sunlight from the west. From the windows facing the sunset, the view encompasses the surrounding garrigue shrublands as well as the flock of sheep from the neighbouring village that regularly graze nearby. To the north, the building has remained in its original state with, on the lower level, solid cross vaults which sheltered the animals under the hayloft above. The courtyard facades are entirely lime-rendered and those visible from the outside - with the exception of the east wing - show bonded rubble limestone. The gable roofs are clad with monk-and-nun tiles.

House Uzès (30)

In the French department of Gard, the listed Carthusian monastery of Valbonne and its growing estate founded in 1204. Taking up a small, 43 ha valley which constitutes its forest and vineyard, the Carthusian monastery of Valbonne is a vast property complex, the buildings of which are essentially grouped around 2 courtyards and 2 cloisters in accordance with their original purpose. Founded in 1203 but partially rebuilt and redesigned in the 17th century following the damage caused by the French Wars of Religion, modified and completed in line with its successive uses, the appearance of the monastery nevertheless still resembles its original contours. It was classified as a French historic monument in 1959 and 1974. Although its initial vocation as a place of worship and spirituality is now over, the farm estate has, however, been developed predominantly as a vineyard. At the same time, it is open to the general public for visits and is also part of a hotel and catering activity. History The occupation of what was until then a small, anonymous valley in the heart of a dense forest over one thousand years old began in the 11th century with the construction of a convent for Benedictine nuns. Our-Lady-of-Bondilhon, built in a forest and isolated, became unsafe and was abandoned at the end of the 12th century, having been occupied by the nuns for two centuries. The Bishop of Uzès of the time, Guilhem-de-Vénéjan, worrying about the Cathar heresy spreading amongst the estates belonging to the Count of Toulouse, appealed to the order of Carthusian monks and gave them permission to construct a new monastery in place of the deserted convent. The Order’s 41st house was thus founded on 10 February 1204. Having reclaimed and cleared the land, ten or so monks set up home there. This marshy valley, made fertile through the Carthusian monks’ work, then became “vallis bona” or Valbonne. Conflicts with the neighbouring priory of Saint-Pierre-de-Saint-Saturnin-du-Port in a first instance, followed by looting during the One Hundred Years War and, above all, devastation caused by the Wars of Religion did not spare the new Carthusian monastery. In 1585, it was destroyed, looted and burnt. Monks, sent from the head monastery, began rebuilding it as of 1593. The reconstruction of the Great Cloister and the Entrance Gateway was also started at this time. A new church was then built between 1770 and 1780. The French Revolution in 1789 put an end to the expansion of this community of Carthusian monks. The last father left Valbonne on 1 October 1790. Having become national property and deconsecrated as well as looted once again, Valbonne’s Carthusian monastery then fell into ruin. On 28 January 1836, Carthusian monks bought back the monastery. Restored and completed with new buildings, a community of monks following the Rule of Saint Bruno lived there until 1901. The abandoned building was once again bought at auction in 1926 by Pastor-Philadelphe-Delord who then founded a protestant association for helping victims of tropical diseases there; the ASVMT still owns the monastery.

Uzès - Avignon - Nîmes. The poet Verlaine spoke of the desire to be free like the heathland, under the ample reddish sun, flourishing scents of thyme and lavender… to be one with the scrubland undulating down the natural valleys, beside a sea of verdant fields and vines. Here, in the distance, deep green Cyprus trees appear like brush strokes, between the walking trails bordered by low walls and stone huts perfumed with thyme and juniper. Nestled on the side of a hill, protected from the Mistral winds, this village is gathered around the clock tower. And this remarkable house, full of personality, was built by local ancestors in a serene and welcoming part of the character-filled village, which offers basic shops. A garden planted with various Mediterranean plants offers a wonderful palette of colours and pastels all through the season. It features a tiled, 8 x 4 salt water swimming pool, enclosed with made-to-measure wrought iron. And what can we say about the 185m² of living space? That it has been renovated with respect for the spirit of the house, with beautiful features of this epoch, including traditional terracotta tiling, flagstones and sculptured stone fireplaces. The main living area of more than 100m², at ground level, offers a vast custom-built kitchen with plenty of storage, a dining room of 45m² with a monumental fireplace with a roasting spit capable of cooking a whole lamb in an atmosphere worthy of medieval feasts. This room enjoys a double exposition and a direct access onto two terraces, each with a high quality wrought iron pergola. Next, a small, intimate living room (21m²) and the pleasures of a second fireplace, giving access to the main living room (36.5m²). At the same level, a guest bathroom and toilet. Finally, upstairs, 4 bedrooms including a suite of more than 30m² and rare beauty, with solid oak parquetry, dressing room and comfortably-sized marble bathroom (double wash basins, shower and bath). The cherry on the cake: the house is perfectly secure in case of prolonged absence. The motorway and train-lines are conveniently nearby. Between the Cèze Valley and the Uzège region, around 25 minutes from the Duchy of Uzès and 40 minutes from the City of the Popes in Avignon. This bourgeois Manor-style house, built in 1902, is situated on the Côtes du Rhône route in a delightful, bucolic region, and set in over a hectare of exceptional, shady parkland, including 5,000m² of beautifully landscaped trees. It is rooted in its wine-growing terroir and is typical of the social landscape of our countryside in the last century. But how do you recognise a bourgeois house? By its charm? Of course, but also... The large number of windows and openings, the thick stone walls, the high ceilings, the stone or marble fireplaces, the wrought iron, the location in the heart of a park, the calm and serenity that reign there... so many architectural features and a quality of life. They drew their inspiration from the châteaux and manor houses of the nobility, eventually breaking away from them to create their own style. More than 200 m² of living space, paved with cabochon tiles, cement tiles with baroque decoration, decorative plasterwork, marble fireplace, terrace enclosed by balusters... so many elements assembled in a perfect harmony. The ground floor features a superb sweeping stone staircase with wrought iron handrail, a fully fitted and furnished kitchen with glass roof, an intimate lounge, study and toilet. The first floor comprises three bedrooms, one of which is ensuite with its own bathroom and a central bathroom for the other 2 bedrooms. On the second floor, there is a large sleeping area with sloping ceilings, a bathroom and a room in the attic for conversion. The exterior features a 9 x 4m swimming pool, completely renovated in 2022, as well as the machinery and equipment room. On the practical side, there are a number of outbuildings: a cellar, a laundry and boiler room, a carport for vehicle parking and a pretty summer room for leisure, relaxation and well-being. There is also a water bore with pump and booster, a new septic tank and an automatic gate. Central heating is provided by cast-iron radiators. An atypical property with character, just a stone's throw from the shops (approx. 7 minutes) and a bucolic little path for a dip in the Cèze River, 5 minutes' walk from the house. Close to the main roads and railways, in the heart of the tourist and business centres of the south of France, this cosy, warm residence offers you a calm, friendly lifestyle, with a meticulous renovation in terms of choice of materials and colours.
