Manor Avignon (84)

The “Mas de la Brune”, a listed, Renaissance-style gem, its 4 ha of parklands and its gardens at the foot of the Alpilles mountains in Eygalières. At the end of a row of two-hundred-year-old horse chestnut trees, three interconnected constructions comprise the buildings on this predominantly wooded, 4-ha property. The first is the Renaissance-style manor house, known as the “Mas de la Brune”, constructed in 1572; the only building of this type, standing in the middle of the land, rising up like a nave, proudly showing visitors the prow of its watch-turret. Directly adjoining the manor, a more recent construction dating from the 18th century stands in the shade of a three-hundred-year-old lime tree. This building once housed the staff accommodation. And lastly, on the east side, where a perimeter wall no doubt once existed, a rehabilitated farmhouse is separated from the manor by a row of cypress trees. Opening on to a vast courtyard that extends behind the French formal garden, it acts as a link with the rest of the parklands, where the permanent singing of the precious water, coming down from the Alpilles Mountains via the canal of the same name, can be heard. The French Historic Monument listing, dating from the 9 August 1924, applies solely to the “Mas de la Brune”, already showing on Cassini’s 18th century map under the name of “Grand Mas”. Some say it was constructed for the consul Pierre-Bruno-Isnard, who gave it the feminine version of his surname, whilst others maintain it was for an alchemist, whose name is long forgotten. In both cases, this outstanding building, entirely constructed from Baux stone, was probably built by master mason, Gaston-Flayelle, native of the Vivarais region, who also designed the “Hôtel de Manville” in Les-Baux-de-Provence. The size of the manor house, its biblical paraphrases sculpted on the façade, like a big open book, and including the secret number of steps of its spiral stairway tend to reinforce the hypothesis of an alchemist’s home. A spacious tiled swimming pool, cleverly concealed from onlookers in a copse of laurel bushes, has been installed a good distance from the main house. And lastly, a carpark, out of sight of the manor but able to take ten or so cars, has been laid out in the shade of mulberry plane trees.

A stone's throw from Avignon, at the end of a path crossing pine forests and olive groves (850 feet), is this beautiful 18th century farmhouse. The only construction authorized on this massif, this property offers an incredible setting made up of meadows, scrubland and oak groves (450 feet of truffle oaks). In this little paradise, calm reigns supreme, reinforcing the magic of this oasis of serenity. Quietude does not mean isolation, however, since the village is 2 km away, Avignon TGV station 10 km away and the Alpilles and Saint-Remy-de-Provence 20 km away. The stone farmhouse offers quality materials highlighting the charm of the properties of yesteryear: Montpellier bars, exposed beams, stone fireplaces and bread oven. The contemporary is nevertheless present thanks to fiber, low temperature underfloor heating on both levels and a luxurious bathroom (corian, marble and integrated audio system). An adjoining apartment can also be used to accommodate a caretaker. Only a visit will allow you to feel the emotions that emerge from this exceptional estate of more than 28 hectares.

House Avignon (84)

A consular building with a six century long history, with salons, nine apartments, outbuildings and a 600 m² garden in the heart of Avignon. The residence is strategically located in one of the inner city pedestrianised streets, which once followed the outer contours of the first city wall. From the Middle Ages onwards, the street was occupied by craftsmen who polished armour, hence its current name. A leather market was also held here until the marshal of the Roman court moved it elsewhere. The residence was built in 1364 under the pontificate of Pope Urban V. At the time, it was inhabited by Peysonnier, the papal money-changer, before being sold to a lord from Turin, Gabriel de Fogasse, who came to settle in the city as first consul. It still has a number of prominent features from the period, including a remarkable octagonal tower housing one of the four staircases. Over the centuries, it took on the various styles that it still bears today. These styles are so different and so intertwined, ranging from Renaissance to Classicism, that putting them together was rather disconcerting for some. Each illustrious member of the family that occupied it for several centuries, including six papal and royal ambassadors, left their own very personal mark on it. The noble features of the facade which can be seen on the street are a perfect illustration of this stately past. In 1795, the family, whose name the house bears, was expelled when the papal city lost its status as the jewel of the Holy Roman Empire and became an ordinary French town. In the 19th century, its new owner, the largest madder merchant in the region, took advantage of the closure of one of the two streets that bordered the residence to annex a former public square and create an imposing 600 m² garden. Since then, the house has had many occupants and fortunes, until one woman fell in love with it and turned it into the not-to-be-missed festival venue it has become.

House Avignon (84)

A fully renovated house with a 60m² floor area, a terrace and a garage, tucked away down a calm alley in the heart of Avignon. Traces of Avignon’s medieval past remain in its centre, despite all the changes made to this old city since the 14th century. This is especially so in Avignon’s ancient streets, some of which have been miraculously spared by the different architects that have redesigned the city over the course of its long story. The narrow road on which this dwelling stands is one of these ancient streets. This modest alley ran alongside the gardens of grand houses, one of which is now a remarkable museum. Basil was cultivated on this street when the plant was imported from the Indies in the 15th century. This trend gave the street its name. There a very few facades along the alley. Indeed, there are barely half a dozen houses here. Only tall stone walls enclosing vast private gardens are tokens of the past along this street. The small house, with its pale blue shutters, is framed between two of these tall stone walls. It has a ground floor, a first floor and a converted roof space. Though it has two upper floors, only one can be seen from the street. The building was probably once a stable, then a storehouse for horse-drawn vehicles. It used to stand at the end of the grounds of an imposing grand house, the enclosing wall of which it was built against. It is likely that this little dwelling was built in the late 19th century. Indeed, the door surround of the entrance bears the inscription ‘1881’. Its facade stands on the quiet alley. Its exposed stonework with pointing is typical of small Provençal homes. This facade is simple: there is just a garage door, an entrance door and two windows.

House Avignon (84)

A former priory and its listed chapel converted into a country house, with swimming pool and outbuildings, set in 2 ha of protected grounds including woodland close to Aix-en-Provence. The approach to the priory is particularly secluded. Behind a small gate, a track runs alongside meadows lined with tall trees, gradually revealing the north facade of the former priory. Built on top of a 9th-century building, it was extended in the 12th century by a Romanesque chapel and in the 17th century by a farmhouse. The coursed limestone masonry elevations have a few windows, which suggest that there may be larger openings to the south. The roofs are of monk-and-nun tiles and a bell gable overlooks the landscape at the eastern end of the chapel. The joinery is all wood and all the doors are moulded. The grounds surrounding the building extend over 2 hectares, planted with over 2,000 tall specimen trees providing shade and privacy. Part meadow, part undergrowth, they benefit from an abundance of water thanks to a branch of the Touloubre canal, tamed by a pond and sluice gates located throughout the grounds. A small guest house and a 16 x 6 m swimming pool complete the property.

Apartment Avignon (84)

A 170m² ground-floor apartment with a garden, listed as a historical monument for its refined wallpaper paintings, nestled between Avignon and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The apartment lies on the ground floor of the Hôtel Senchon de Bournissac – a jewel in the crown of the town’s rich architectural heritage. At the start of the 18th century, François Senchon, a lawyer at the Parlement of Provence in the city of Aix-en-Provence, acquired some plots in this small town. These plots surrounded a courtyard. Here, Senchon began building his grand house in a calm spot far from urban bustle. Beyond a tall three-storey facade with a symmetrical arrangement of windows, a spacious stairwell with a fine balustrade connects to rooms with French-style beamed ceilings and offers a remarkable example of 18th-century architecture. Later, in the 19th century, thanks to the prosperity of the Senchon de Bournissac family, the elegant edifice was extended: a wing was built alongside the garden, its ground floor forming a vast gallery-like room. Today, this apartment lies in this extension. Remarkable decorative features inside also date back to this period. For example, in the two connecting rooms that look out at the street, the refined wallpaper paintings are still intact and ornate plaster works embellish the fireplace trumeau panels and the decorative panels above the doorways. The beauty and rarity of these decorative features prompted France’s cultural heritage authorities to register this apartment and other parts of the Hôtel Senchon de Bournissac as a listed historical monument by decree on 29 August 2000.

House Avignon (84)

A small country residence with its little hut and terraced gardens on the heights of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, opposite the Palais des Papes. The property is located in the heart of a peaceful part of the highly sought-after little town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, a holiday resort for cardinals during the Avignon Papacy from 1309-1403 and now a privileged residential area near the 'Cité des Papes' (papal city). The gated complex of a contemporary residence stands out from the Chemin de Monteau which, as its name suggests, leads up to the heights of the village. At the end of the street, there is a private car park: to the right of the large two-car garage, a narrow path leads up to a metal wicket gate. From here, a flight of uneven steps, punctuated by landings, leads to the house and the 'mazet' (hut) below, surrounded by greenery. The grounds are laid out in 'restanques' (terraces), the largest featuring a small house built against the rock, sheltered from the mistral wind - a major advantage in this region - and from prying eyes. It is extended by a terrace shaded by a period wisteria-covered arbour. Continuing on through the pines and hackberries, there is a mazet which has been converted into a lodge, with an adjoining terrace and shady courtyard, overlooking the roofs of the houses at the bottom of the town. The owner, an architect, restored and remodelled the dwelling presenting a facade with simple, evenly spaced openings. On the eastern side, it features a modern extension with large picture windows and glass doors, topped by a roof terrace.
