Property Nantes (44)
An authentic Nantes folly with its wooded grounds and private jetty, on the banks of the River Erdre near Nantes. The entrance to the property is via a motorised, wrought iron gate at the end of a cul-de-sac off a small local road. A drive traverses a thicket and runs around the back of the house, leading to garages and a Directoire-style terrace. From here, the majestic view opens out over the parkland below and the Erdre at its widest point. The steeply sloping grounds, planted with centuries-old trees, end in a bank almost 100 m long, featuring a private jetty. A small country house built by the town's former mayor on the banks of the River Erdre in 1821, it was subsequently remodelled with the addition of a Directoire-style double dormer window. Two wings were added in the early 20th century, lending the residence its true 'folie nantaise' (Nantes folly) appearance, named after the summer villas built by wealthy industrialists at that time. The rectangular folly has a central section with three bays, flanked by two single-bay wings. At the top of the grounds, close to the entrance gates, there are discreet outbuildings used for parking vehicles and storing equipment. Their coursed schist masonry walls and tiled roofs stand in no contrast with those of the noble building, with its rendered facades and slate roof.

Castle Nantes (44)
An elegant 19th century chateau set in 4 hectares of wooded, enclosed grounds with outbuildings and pond, 25 km south of Nantes. The estate extends over more than 4 hectares in a single lot, surrounded by fields and hedgerows. At the end of a local lane that also serves the hamlet, the 19th-century chateau comes into view amidst unspoilt countryside. The entrance to the edifice is preceded by a driveway bordered by horse chestnut trees which leads to a forecourt. Then two symmetrical wrought iron gates and a low wall topped with a Versailles-style grille demarcate the rectangular front courtyard, which is bordered on either side by the former outbuildings. The roughly 600 m² of stone buildings with tiled roofs include coach houses, a cattle shed, a wine storehouse and a wine press, testifying to the activities of the former castellany. Dating back to 1870 and enlarged in 1890, the chateau boasts a distinctive eclecticism, having retained the best of the various architectural styles emblematic of the 19th century. The residence is rectangular in plan with four bays; the entrance courtyard side faces south-west and the wooded parklands side north-east. The facades feature brick and tuffeau or Sireuil stone dressings and are topped by a slate roof. Metal ridges run along the top of the roof. The levels are separated by wide stringcourses and the windows are protected by stone balustrades. To the rear, the chateau conceals a vast terrace, covered by a 40 m² bioclimatic pergola, next to a 10 x 4 m swimming pool. The grounds are enclosed by walls or railings. The parklands are dotted with tall trees, lawns, groves of trees, meadows and a 1,000 m² pond fed by rainwater. It is bordered to the north-east by the Boulogne, where a riverbank of almost 200 linear metres provides direct access to the river.

Property with pool Nantes (44)
A magnificent, restored “Folie nantaise”, a mansion with outbuildings, set in 2 hectares of walled parkland on the banks of the Loire. In the village, a boundary wall runs along a street that once led to a small port built on a 'boire' (dead branch) of the Loire. A tall wrought iron work gate reveals a grand courtyard with a circular lawn in the centre. On one side, there is a wooded area with a path leading to a chapel. On the other, the former outbuildings form a rectangular inner courtyard, with a second entrance from the street. These outbuildings, situated at the foot of the mansion, also have slate roofs and are two storeys high. The main residence has three levels, with rendered or exposed stone facades and rectangular, semicircular or segmental arch windows. The mansion, with its elegant neo-classical facade, stands at the far end of the main courtyard. The residence was built in 1773 by the great 18th-century architect and town planner Jean-Baptiste Ceineray, who designed some of the most remarkable buildings and wide avenues in the city of Nantes. As the town's chief architect from 1757 to 1780, Ceineray left his neo-classical mark on the City of the Dukes of Brittany, and went on to build some of the region's most important town houses, chateaux and mansions. He inspired and trained architects like Mathurin Crucy, who was to continue his work until the early 19th century. Grounds of just over 1 ha extend to the rear. They include a formal French garden and a swimming pool, sheltered by centuries-old cedars. At the far end, enclosed by a stone wall framed by two lodges, the property is extended by a field alongside a municipal path bordering the Loire below.
