Castle Agen (47)
A 15th century, Seigneurial home in almost 8 5 ha, given over to leisure and horses, between the Lot Valley and the Guyenne hills. Surrounded by unspoilt countryside, this residential property is composed of several buildings, converted for accommodation and leisure purposes. It is set in grounds, spanning more than 8 continuous hectares, including woods, meadows and even a pond, much appreciated by passing ducks. The origins of this old Seigneury, belonging to a local count, date back to the 15th century. Around 1650, two wings were adjoined to the main rectangular building, creating a U-shape around a main courtyard. Nowadays, a low stone wall, vestige of the east wing, still supports the boxwood parterre which shields the swimming pool and its swimmers from onlookers in the courtyard. Adjoining, a dovecote tower with a stone stairway - certainly the old, monumental stairway - going up to the first floor, no doubt once home to the wing’s Great Room. It is followed by a farm outbuilding which, built at the latest in the early 19th century, houses a workshop and a guest house, comprising two dwellings. The count’s heirs lived modestly in these premises until 1996, without carrying out a great deal of maintenance works. The property was almost completely restored, with some sections being entirely reconstructed, by the current owners. The access road, ending in a dead end, separates the truffle woods and the horse enclosures. Further on is a tennis court set, on a slightly lower level, between shrubberies and vegetation; then a strip of land laid to lawn marks a last breath of air before starting down the gentle slope towards the entrance at the foot of the buildings.

Castle Agen (47)
A 13th-century Gascon chateau, redesigned in the 16th century, in 7 5 hectares of grounds with an orangery and a dovecote, nestled in France's Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This chateau stands like a sentry by its quaint village in a commanding, defensive position from where it looks out over the surrounding slopes. The chateau has defended the valley for more than 700 years. The four-storey dwelling and its two adjoining round towers are the remnants of the original Gascon castle. In the 15th century, mullioned windows were added to let more natural light inside. And an Italian Renaissance stairway tower was added too. The chateau was rescued by a man who was enthusiastic about built heritage. He restored it and showcased the Italian style that characterised the Aquitaine region’s most beautiful houses – a style that we also see in the gardens and the chateau’s main lounge.

House Agen (47)
An old hunting lodge, set in a wonderful garden surrounded by forest, in the Landes-Girondines region. Once the remote-controlled gates are open, visitors are able to appreciate a view of the garden. With its wealth of flowers, it is harmoniously laid out around the large house whose origins date back to the 16th century. It was once a convent, prior to being converted into a hunting lodge. It is said that Henri IV stayed here during his many jaunts into the region, but that is possibly a legend.

House Agen (47)
A generous 13th century town residence set in extensive grounds of approx 2000 m², in the heart of the Lot-et-Garonne department. At the end of the 18th century, the mansion served as a residence for senior staff members of the chateau, just a few metres away. Built in line with the adjoining houses, it is the first at the entrance to the street. Like the neighbouring houses, it is three storeys high and has a rendered stone facade with dressed stone corner quoins and window surrounds, which are perfectly juxtaposed. The evenly spaced, small-paned windows with wooden frames are protected by solid wooden shutters. The overall architectural style is harmonious and sober. A garden with box hedges sheltered by large trees at the front of the main facade provides a welcome screen of greenery. A semi-private driveway shared with the neighbours separates the garden from the mansion. On the main facade of the residence, a large metal gate provides access to the garage. Continuing on, a massive oak door forms the service entry. The main entrance follows in the form of a carved oak double door with a glazed transom. The gable roof is clad with Roman tiles. To the rear, there is an outbuilding set at right-angles to the main house, protecting it from noise pollution and prying eyes. The dwelling not only forms part of the local history of the 18th century, it is also the birthplace of the artist Raoul Dastrac, a post-impressionist painter from the first half of the 20th century who was born and died in Aiguillon. After his training with Laurens and Dechenaud in Paris, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon d'Automne from 1922 onwards. A painter of local life, he set up his easel in Cahors and Avignon, in Italy and in the United States. As he was also an art connoisseur, his own canvases and other collections were displayed in his residence during the latter part of his life.

Mill Agen (47)
A fortified watermill with a 12th-century tower, nestled in the River Tolzac valley in France’s Lot-et-Garonne department. From the road, the edifice’s gable end can be seen emerging ever so slightly from the thick vegetation around it. But to properly admire the architecture of this beautiful watermill, its medieval tower and its adjoining annexe, you have to leave the road, drive along a river with a strip of lawn on your other side, then park in a gravelled space. At first glance, you see an intriguing mix of structures made of pointed rubble stone and brick with many windows, beneath roofs of monk-and-nun tiling. The river flows through two stone arches that support the watermill from underneath. Behind, a square tower crowned with a pyramidal roof of flat tiles overlooks the whole complex. Lawns surround the buildings and edge the steep-banked river. At the back, an iron footbridge crosses the stream and leads to a meadow that stretches north-west beyond leafy trees. Further upstream on the grounds, two brooks join to form one, flow in a loop, and turn the water wheel. On the other side, in front of a grove, a swimming pool lies beside the annexe. A few metres from there, a garden shed stands near a vegetable patch. The property covers over 1.2 hectares in total.

House with pool Agen (47)
The old home of a 'bailli' with a guesthouse and pool, beside a 13th-century Benedictine Abbey in a historical town above the banks of the River Lot. This residence stands in the middle of the old town, adjoining a Benedictine Abbey, steeped in history. A medieval street leads to the house’s wooden entrance gates. The outside wall is constructed from half-timbering with small brick masonry filler. The window overlooking the street features modest wooden mullions, but those of the windows on the south facade, hidden from the street, are made of stone; wealth always being concealed on the inside in the land of the Huguenots. The gates open into a little paved courtyard separating the two wings of the house. The Abbey wall facing the entrance supports a covered area that leads to the garden. Closed by a wicket gate, said garden is dominated by the nave of the Abbey, together with its stained glass lancet windows, and is surrounded by a thick boxwood hedge which also screens the swimming pool. Another wicket gate leads to the large house’s second terraced garden, providing a splendid view over the Lot Valley as far as the hills in the Serre area. The land slopes steeply down to the river.
