The Composer’s Former Home · Avenida Entre Ríos, Buenos Aires There are homes that belong to a city. And then there are homes that become part of its cultural memory.
On the tenth floor of a Rationalist building on Avenida Entre Ríos, this exceptional 1,184 sq ft (110 m²) penthouse occupies the entire floor and was, for many years, the private residence of Astor Piazzolla , the Argentine composer and bandoneón virtuoso whose revolutionary approach to tango transformed the genre and carried it to audiences around the world.
Today, the apartment remains an extraordinarily intimate piece of that history.
Two commemorative plaques at the entrance acknowledge its significance, including one installed by the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires in celebration of the centenary of Piazzolla’s birth. Beyond the plaques, however, it is the apartment itself that tells the story.
For Piazzolla, this was not merely a place to live. It was a creative refuge and a meeting point for musicians, writers and artists during one of the most important periods in the evolution of Argentine music. Family accounts associate these rooms with the creation of works including María de Buenos Aires , Otoño Porteño and Verano Porteño . It was also here that Piazzolla and Jorge Luis Borges developed their celebrated collaboration, El Tango .
The apartment has been preserved with remarkable fidelity to the way Piazzolla knew it. Original parquet floors extend through the generously proportioned, light-filled interiors, while mid-century details remain intact: paneled cabinetry, deep upholstered chairs and distinctive pendant lighting. The atmosphere is elegant yet deeply personal, offering a rare glimpse into the world of an artist who changed the course of tango forever.
At the heart of the residence, a corner salon is framed by a generous bay of windows surrounding the piano. From here, Buenos Aires unfolds in every direction, with rooftops, historic architectural landmarks and the distant city skyline stretching toward the horizon.
It was this extraordinary sense of elevation and freedom that inspired Piazzolla to call his home “mi castillo en el aire” — “my castle in the air.”
More than a residence, this is a place connected to a defining chapter in the cultural history of Buenos Aires and to the life of an artist whose music transcended borders, genres and generations.
The current owners are seeking more than a conventional transaction. Their wish is to entrust the apartment to someone who understands its cultural significance and will preserve it with the same care with which it has been maintained.
Private viewings are available by appointment.
