Vacation Rental & Development Potential
Two neighboring oceanfront homes already operate as vacation rentals, placing the estate within an established holiday setting. With separate accommodation and generous grounds, House on the Hill lends itself to an owner’s island escapes alongside guest stays.
The adjoining coastal parcel is included in the offering, providing scope to explore additional cottages or guest accommodation. The existing home offers a starting point, with room to develop a broader vision over time.
Residence & Guest Accommodation
The three bedroom, three and a half bathroom main residence offers approximately 2,635 sq. ft. of interior living space. A separate one bedroom, one bathroom guest cottage provides approximately 527 sq. ft., complemented by a staff cottage of approximately 384 sq. ft.
Traditional open air design, terracotta tiled covered walkways and cut limestone patios connect the accommodation to the gardens and waterfront. The guest cottage includes a kitchenette, sitting and sleeping areas, and loft space. An outdoor stone shower, terraced ocean-facing patios and waterfront deck invite relaxed days shaped by the sea.
A thoughtful renovation offers the opportunity to refresh the home while preserving the natural materials and architectural details that give it its distinctive island character.
History & Architectural Character
The original house was built for Simon Wardell, a British journalist and friend of the Duke of Windsor, Governor of The Bahamas during World War II. Constructed with the same materials used in Fresh Creek’s original Lighthouse Club, it later belonged to Wardell’s widow, Grace, and subsequently to a founder of Androsia, the Bahamian batik fabric and clothing brand.
In 1997, it was remodeled and expanded into the modern rustic villa seen today. The original wing was incorporated into the larger residence, with architectural design by Robertson Ward Associates, whose international portfolio includes residences in Lyford Cay.
Native Andros pine, reportedly milled on the island, brings warmth to the architecture. A stone hearth and “sugar oven” incorporate blocks attributed in the owner’s account to the Deveaux mansion. In the gardens, the remains of an old Bahamian stone cottage form a distinctive “folly,” surrounded by flowering plants, native trees and fruit trees.
Andros Lifestyle & Access
Days on Andros might begin on the bonefishing flats, continue with offshore fishing or boating, and end overlooking the water at home. Snorkeling and diving reveal the Andros Barrier Reef, while beyond it the Tongue of the Ocean descends into remarkable depths.
The island’s exceptional concentration of blue holes, pine forests and mangrove waterways offers further exploration. Protected habitats shelter wildlife including the Andros rock iguana, while Fresh Creek’s Androsia batik tradition provides a connection to local craft and culture.
Approximately 15 minutes by air from Nassau, Fresh Creek is served by Andros Town Airport, with scheduled flights and private charter options. Arrival by private boat from New Providence offers another way to reach the island, depending on vessel and conditions.
