House Auriac-du-Périgord (24)

Very rare in the region: old farm located at the top of a hill on an area of about 30 hectares of meadow and woods and including a well and two springs. No vis-à-vis, no view of the buildings from the road. Several of the buildings annexed to the main house are from the 17th century and the whole constitutes a total footprint of 1300 m2 in an area of 2400 m2. The main house from the 1980s has approximately 100 m2 of living space, and houses a 20 m2 fitted kitchen, a 35 m2 living room, a first 19 m2 bedroom, a second 9 m2 room, a small 6 m2 room, a bathroom, a separate toilet and a clearance area. Upstairs, the attic (currently 1 room and 2 separate spaces), suitable for conversion over approximately 65 m2 of living space, rests on a concrete slab floor in very good condition. Outside, an open terrace of approximately 50 m2 on 2 sides of the house reveals a magnificent panorama over the distant countryside. About 30 meters away, a recently renovated gîte whose walls date from the 17th century houses, on the ground floor: a reception room of around 50 m2, a hallway of around 10 m2, then a professional kitchen of around 15 m2 equipped with a cold room. The bathroom with wc and the laundry room are grouped together in a small annex adjoining the gîte. A 2nd entrance opens onto a period kitchen of approximately 22 m2. From there, stairs lead on one side to a bedroom of about 20 m2 and, on the other side, two beautiful rooms, each with a fireplace and suitable for conversion. A little further away, is revealed a period house with its open fireplace, to renovate, on 2 levels that can be converted, including the attic. Various outbuildings, tunnel, barns, old bread oven.

House Domme (24)

Domme: a discreet house and its independent dwelling with tree-lined garden, small, private courtyards. The property comprises a main house, and an annexe. The complex appertains to the maze of ever-present steep alleyways in this clifftop village. One of its three sides opens directly onto the Place de la Rode, one of the two squares in the village with shops and where fairs were held, benefiting from the local right to mint coins. This shows the extent to which it was, and still is, at the heart of the life of the town, its silhouette forming an inextricable part of the site. Apart from the access to the square, there are no fewer than five entrances, including a large carriage gate, leading to and from the property and the streets that surround it on three sides. The medieval character of the buildings and their fortified appearance are ubiquitous, from the “Porte des Tours” to the 13th century listed ramparts that encircle part of the town. Built around 1280, then constantly modified and enlarged until the 19th century, the property is no exception, exuding a strong sense of security defying the test of time. The facades are of light-coloured stone, quarried in Mauzens and Paussac. Solidly grouted, they combine a regular pattern of dressed stone with an irregular pattern revealing the natural relief of the mineral surfaces. Wood features prominently on these facades, with corner posts, dwarf studs, angle braces and sill plates, in particular around the courtyard opening onto the square. The outdoor courtyards are paved with an irregular patchwork of old Périgord Montagnac stone. The steeply sloping roofs are mostly clad with flat rectangular terracotta tiles erroneously referred to as 'Burgundy tiles', even though they are found from Quercy to England and Germany, including the Paris region. Some of the courtyard door and window frames have retained their old ironwork and knockers, with the rust set under a protective varnish, enhancing every trace that time has left in the stone and wood of this historic landmark.

In the Vallée de l'Homme, near Lascaux, which is subject to the same UNESCO classification as these two sites since the classification in 1979 by UNESCO of the 'Prehistoric sites and decorated caves of the Vézère valley'. 'There is no prehistoric site in the world that equals this one for the quantity, the quality, the variety of finds'. Each site is visited by approximately 10,000 visitors per year (owner's figures for information only). The Cro-Magnon shelter in Eyzies-de-Tayac, is the place of discovery in 1868 which gave its name to Cro-Magnon Man, Modern Man, Homo Sapiens, it is a shelter under rock, burial place. In 1868, it was during work related to the arrival of the railway that 5 fossil skeletons were discovered with ornaments in shells, ivory, red ochre, flint and bone. This burial dated -28,000 years is the first discovery of modern man, today called Homo Sapiens, initially called Cro-Magnon men; and the first discovery of a prehistoric man's burial. The bones and ornaments are today in various museums including the Natural History Museum in Paris. A museum was created on site after 15 years of work to unify the then fragmented site and inaugurated in 2014 by internationally renowned paleontologist and paleoanthropologist Yves Coppens. It is made up of a house and a 19th century farmhouse in freestone, completely restored with fine materials and fitted out as a museum. It includes video projections, writings, archaeological objects, a space devoted to the archeology of the 19th century and the discovery of the shelter in 1868; the Cro-Magnon shelter which is a cleared and staged rock shelter; a course on the side of a cliff with sound. Private parking. 550 meters from the National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies de Tayac. The Sorcerer's cave in Saint-Cirq in a natural site of great beauty is a prehistoric site decorated with rock sculptures from the Magdalenian, 17,000 years ago. The lighting and mirrors allow you to see the exceptional decor, animals, horses, bison, geometric shapes, three rare human representations, including a wizard with an erect penis. On the side of the cliff, the site looks like a village of three houses with slate roofs, and various small outbuildings, superbly restored in the traditional way, the entrance to the cave under a wooden canopy; troglodytes and small stairs in the walls. Bread oven, fountain. A superbly planted terraced garden overlooking the valley. A parking. Collections of flint and archaeological objects, many animal remains, casts, gogotte of flint probably linked to a cult of fertility, rare Magdalenian sculpted turtle.
