Castle Aubenas (07)

Located in southern Ardèche, overlooking the French Tuscany, this splendid castle, listed as a Historical Monument, traces its origins back to the 14th century. From its medieval era, it has preserved numerous architectural details such as watchtowers, machicolations, and battlements. Welcome to a place steeped in history, a stronghold nestled in the heart of a beautiful village, just an hour from Montélimar. Dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, this majestic residence proudly stands, flanked by two towers that bear the imprint of the medieval era, retaining elements like watchtowers, machicolations, and battlements. The soul of this residence is expressed through a splendid central spiral stone staircase, elegantly connecting three levels and an attic. In 1567, the central part was erected, enriched with watchtowers, arrow slits, and machicolations, added by the Lord of La Motte de Chalendar to protect his family from raiders. In the 18th century, a Tuscan touch was infused into the salon and the Florentine suite, featuring an Italian terrace and French ceilings. This residence spans approximately 600 m2, offering spaces such as cellars, attics, an independent tower, a garage, dependencies under the moat, and even a well supplied by a spring. Outside, an estate of about one hectare unfolds with five diverse gardens, vineyards, and a pool. Impressive with its austere north façade, this defensive castle transforms to the east with terraces and large openings overlooking the Florentine garden. The ensemble evokes Mediterranean elegance, reminiscent of a Tuscan villa, captivating the imagination of those who contemplate it. A proud witness to family history, the castle has remained in the same lineage, passed on to the current owners in 2004. They embarked on a complete restoration, meticulously preserving every architectural detail. The interior reveals a harmonious blend of vaulted rooms, lounges with fireplaces, dining rooms, libraries, and luxurious bedrooms. The garden level houses functional spaces, while the first floor unveils elegant suites and spacious bedrooms. The independent tower offers a private space with a lounge, kitchen, and bedrooms. The exteriors beckon relaxation with spacious terraces, a sparkling pool, diverse gardens, a wooded park, and vineyards. This unique family residence charms with its timeless charm and exceptional character. Though private, it remains connected to the village, offering breathtaking views and easy access from the southern highway. Embark on a journey through time in this magical place that seamlessly merges history, luxury, and tranquility.

Castle Pouzauges (85)

Ref.4165: Elegant 19th Century chateau for sale in the vendean bocage. The property is situated in the Vendée bocage, close to the Gâtine, on the borders of the Deux-Sèvres. The bocage is made up of hedges, copses, rivers, meadows, fields and small villages. The nearest village is 3 km away, and offers all local services, including a mini-market, doctor and chemist, as well as two primary schools (state and private). Colleges and lycées are a 10-minute drive away. This part of the Vendée is particularly well known for its history and tourist attractions. The sea is around 90 km away. At the beginning of the 15th century, a fiefdom which depended on the lordship of Parthenay existed on the site of the current château. In 1860, a Justice of the Peace, Frédéric Naud, commissioned a château from the very fashionable architect Paul Joseph Guillerot, who had designed many châteaux in the Vendée. Mr Naud had become mayor of the Commune. The building was planned in an existing clearing, high up, with a beautiful view over the surrounding countryside. The entrance facade was soberly designed, while the other side, which had no door, was enlivened by the play of projections created by the small square pavilions. Around 1905, a veranda with a roof terrace accessible via a bedroom was added. Inside, a clever layout of glazed French windows around the entrance hall provides plenty of light and views of the lovely countryside outside. The château, which spans more than 300 sqm, has been partly renovated and is very light and airy. It has a serene atmosphere. This chateau is the ideal property for those who love the countryside. It's also the perfect place for a family or to welcome guests. The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, a study, a dining room (26 sqm), a lounge (30sqm), a kitchen (24sqm), a boiler room, a shower room with toilet and a conservatory awaiting renovation. A beautiful wooden staircase leads to the upper floors. Upstairs, the landing leads to 5 bedrooms, a bathroom and a toilet. One of the bedrooms has access to the roof terrace of the former greenhouse, from where there is a very pleasant view over the parklands. A large attic (100sqm) could be converted. There is also a partial cellar. The outbuildings include: New wooden stables, 5 boxes Shed (fodder storage) Greenhouse to restore Leanto to restore Cellar The parklands cover almost 17,30 acres, with no close neighbours. A beautiful driveway winds through a wooded area to reach the château, which is set in a dominant position and enjoys lovely views over the countryside. Centuries-old trees surround the château, including a superb purple beech, a sequoia and a plane tree. Meadows are available for animals. Castle Rambouillet (78)

Originally, it was a chateau consisting of three U-shaped buildings, whose date of construction is uncertain. Louis XIV gave the castle to one of his natural daughters, Louise de Maisonblanche. On the site of this castle, the present castle was rebuilt during the Second Empire, in stone and brick, with a slate roof and a floor area of approx. 1,000 m2. In the park, a decorative pond has been laid out from a diversion in the course of the river. The walled English park extends over 53 hectares, of which 40 hectares are classified. On the ground floor, the 15 rooms of the Chateau feature white oak panelled walls. The masterly entrance hall leads to three luxurious reception rooms, a dining room adorned with ecclectic fireplaces, a pantry and a kitchen. The second floor offers a library and four large 'royal' bedrooms with bathrooms, followed by three other classic bedrooms with bathrooms, and a study. The second floor features a master bedroom with boudoir and bathroom. Four further rooms, forming an apartment of approx. 100m&, with a choice of use for staff, complete this beautiful ensemble. A further 1,000m² of outbuildings include an orangery, janitor's and gardener's accommodation and a house. Ideally located less than 15 minutes from Rambouillet, with all the advantages of this town of 25,000 inhabitants, it offers the possibility of living in the chateau as a main residence, or of recharging your batteries in the company of the pink flamingos and wallabys present in the park, depending on whether you want to keep them or not... The Montparnasse train station can be reached in 35 minutes, making this property a rare opportunity in the Ile de France region. Property in very good condition.

Castle Valence (26)

A 17th-century chateau listed as a historical monument with a large outbuilding and splendid grounds looking out at the Rhône valley in France’s Drôme department. The local village was once a fief of the Poitiers-Valentinois family. It became part of the Kingdom of France at the start of the 15th century. The village had a chateau before this one. That old chateau was known as the region’s most important fortification, but it was destroyed in the French Wars of Religion. That was when a new chateau was built just outside the village, along the side of a road linking the village to the nearest town, a short distance north of it. Its location was not chosen at random: a spring lies beyond the ditches and it once filled up the property’s ponds and brought its fountains to life. A vast earthen terrace of more than one hectare is edged with embankments and dry moats. Upon it stand two fine edifices built in the style of the Italian Late Renaissance. The chateau towers in the middle of this grassy terrace. Construction of the chateau began in 1591. The edifice continued to be built during the second half of the 17th century. It is a large square-shaped structure with corner towers and a central inner courtyard. It has three levels and a floor area of over 1,300m². In front of the chateau, at the property’s entrance, stands an edifice that was built at the end of the 17th century. It is about 60 metres long and edges a road that runs along the other side of the moat. This structure is made up of a gatehouse flanked with two wings. This gatehouse controls access to the property. The whole building offers a floor area of around 450m². Together, the chateau and the gatehouse with its wings represent a splendid feat of architecture: a classic symmetrical layout going from east to west on an open, grassy terrace. Beyond this section of lawns on which the edifices stand, the grounds extend through meadows and woods over a naturally undulating area. The chateau has been listed as a historical monument since 1990 for its walls, roofing and interior decorative features.

Castle Nersac (16)

A 17th century chateau and its terraces registered as historical monuments, outbuildings, parkland and underground spring, set in 8 hectares of grounds overlooking the Charente valley. From the main road to the south, a large driveway lined with chestnut trees leads to the property gates, to the left of an L-shaped outbuilding to the north-west. A swimming pool at its northern end is protected by a walled enclosure, which extends from the outbuilding to the chateau moat, where it becomes a retaining wall. To the right of the outbuilding, an avenue of gnarled hornbeams crosses the grassy areas where fruit trees have been planted. There are a dovecote and a communal oven a few metres further on in the direction of the chateau. The main building, which is reached by going less than 50 m across the grounds, overlooks the River Charente. It is in an L-shape, which opens onto the sunlit valley it overlooks. Its two wings, framed by dry moats to the east and west, are bordered by terraces above, with the eastern one, which juts out towards the valley, featuring high arches running the entire length of the ground. The west wing, meanwhile, looks as if it is standing on a rock at its end, and the balustrade of the terrace closes off the courtyard on the lower level facing the River Charente, which flows around 300 m below. The chateau walls are crowned with crenellations scalloped on machicolations. The low-sloped canal tile roof is concealed by battlements and the ends of the gutters are in the shape of cannon mouths. The balustrade, at the edge of the dry moat which the entrance to the residence is above, is only just visible. Beyond this, as you go down towards the west, a house facing the stream stands on the hillside. Moors and coppices stretch out towards the river. Finally, beyond the parkland to the west, grassed areas adjoin the woods on the edge of the property.

Castle Montréal (32)

This sumptuous château is found in the heart of Gascony, in the rich and diverse Armagnac region, at an equal distance between Bordeaux and Toulouse (1h45). On the home lands of d ’Artagnan, the estate sits in an elevated position with far-reaching views across the valley. Surrounded by fields bursting with an ever-changing tapestry of colour in the summer months, from the vibrant yellows of the sunflowers, to the neat rows of green vines, the property is situated just a few minutes distance from the picturesque village of Montréal (one of our favourite villages in the Gers) and just a ten minute drive to the larger town of Condom, with its many shops and restaurants. This region is one of the most highly sought-after in Gascony, with visitors driving out here from Lectoure and Condom, Bordeau or Toulouse throughout the year. This is an area world-famous for its music festivals (Condom and its traditional Bandas festival, or Marciac for its renowned jazz festival in the world). Long hot summer evenings are brought to life by colourful night-markets, and many other events throughout the year which ensure that this is a lively area in which to live throughout the winter months as well as the lovely long hot summers. The château is located on the edge of a small hamlet, and sits in private parkland. On arrival, we follow the beautiful stone walls of the gardens, the original ramparts of the château which border the property and can be seen from afar. A traditional wrought- iron gate between two stone pillars marks the entrance. From here onwards, as we enter through the gate, one has an immediate sense of magic as we enter the grounds. A private alley cuts through a line of elegant trees. We pass the guardian’s house, and two cottages, reaching a private driveway at the top where we catch our first glimpse of the Chateau. To the side and the rear of the Château a vast 12ha stretch of land flanks the estate. The parkland itself is filled with a rich variety of mature trees. To each side the fields and pasture is currently tended to by a local farmer. Visible even from up above at the Château one can clearly see a young vineyard, below, planted by the current owners. On an architectural note… The château dates back to the second half of the 19th century, and was once home to a religious order set up by the Pères Prémontrés. The property is built in the shape of an “L” with beautiful golden coloured stone walls and Parisan style persiennes shutters painted in muted tones of elegant grey. Sunshine dapples the walls from the south, the east and the west. There are roses and many varieties of shrubs everywhere you look. The property comprises two main wings, linked on the ground floor, the basement and the first floor. The main house has been lovingly restored by its current owner who is an interior designer. The renovated wing is the southern wing blessed by a beautiful flow of light from the south, north and west it bathes the rooms with natural light throughout the day from its tall windows. The property has undergone a tremendous programme of works supervised by an architect an expert in historical buildings, but as we shall see in more detail later, this property has the advantage of comprising a second as yet non-restored wing : the western wing. The additional Western wing, once restored would lend itself perfectly to parties (a large party room), weddings, or summer lettings. The Southern Wing The entrance A small flight of stone stairs on the northern side separates a courtyard from the majestic entrance, with its turning staircase and doorway onto a beautiful courtyard on the southern side. This south-facing courtyard is graced with a burst of pink blossom from its trees in spring. A long hallway on the northern side leads to the kitchen, a drawing-room and a laundry-room. On the other side there is a second reception room and the guest cloakroom and WC. The ceilings are high and the floors lain with stone tiles. The elegant, sculpted cast-iron radiators throw out additional heat, in addition to the under-floor heating in the entrance hall. The lighting system at the château is particularly well designed, and the property is a delight to visit in the evenings, when on arrival the lights twinkle as they might from The Great Gatsby’s home. The perfect backdrop for a summer party. Reception Room 1 : As with every room in the château the ceilings are high and the tall windows allow one a sweeping view over the valley and across the Gascon countryside. A stone fireplace and double doors divide the first reception room from the kitchen, both rooms are lain with the same stone floor tiles. Reception Room 2 : With a warm and inviting interior this room is a perfect evening room and has the same lovely views, and also a stone fireplace. Cloakroom & Guest WC At the far end of the entrance hall, discreetly positioned behind a carefully designed cloakroom wall we find the spacious guest lavatory and washbasin. The kitchen, Rear kitchen, Laundry-Room It would be more apt to say that the kitchen is yet another grand reception room. Warm and inviting, majestic in size with a long table to welcome guests or for breakfast with views across the valley, this kitchen is the heart of the property and spacious enough to host a large gathering. French doors open on the garden on the western side, where guests can dine under the plane trees and look over the fabulous stone ramparts and balustrades to the stunning views across the valley. Guests are provided with a backdrop view of the medieval ruins of the original château, and the pigeonnier or dovecote. A grand central island with spacious work surface place for big bowls of food prepared on the AGA. The rear kitchen/ scullery is also directly accessible from the garden and the main kitchen and is equipped with a traditional oven. This is an ideal space to be used by caterers serving food in the garden or interior. In the hallway on the other side of the kitchen a door with a beautiful sculptured wooden surround opens onto the laundry room. The First Floor : Bedrooms Opposite the courtyard entrance an impressive stone staircase turns upwards to the first floor, leading to a spacious landing and a second long hallway that runs above the ground floor hallway. All the bedrooms have parquet flooring. At the top of the landing to the right, two bedroom with ensuite shoer rooms and fitted wardrobes with decorative doors from old French armoirs. To the left of the landing there is a third ensuite bathroom with views to the south, and a long hallway leading to a vast parental suite which is one of the most spacious bedrooms and bathrooms we have yet to see in Gascony. The master bedroom suite comprises a vast bedroom with five tall windows, a double dressing room and a bathroom with a double sink, shower and oval bathtub. The Western Wing At the far end of the downstairs entrance hall, close to the entrance to the kitchen, a set of double doors opens onto the western wing comprising two floors with around 400m2 space for further development with planning permission. The Western wing comprises a hallway leading to a staircase to the first floor. On the ground floor there is a large reception room with grand openings to the park, and with views of the Medieval ruin. The family has hosted weddings at the property and this is a perfect room in which to dance and party, opening onto the park, the lovely views of the ramparts, the medieval chateau, and the folly at the end of the garden.
