Castle Uzès (30)

A listed Renaissance chateau surrounding a wooded courtyard in the heart of a market town to the north of Uzès. Standing in the north-western part of the village, the chateau backs onto the town hall and the medieval wall that is still in place. Dating back to 1567, the edifice overlooks a courtyard and features two wings at right angles, facing south and east. The facades and the roof have been listed as French historic monuments since 1990. In the 20th century, the two Renaissance facades, then still in a state of disrepair, were extensively restored. They are adorned with decorative carvings whose scrolls contrast with the austerity of the remaining surrounding fortifications, including the base of a medieval keep dating back to the 12th century. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, the La Fare family built a fortified house at the foot of the keep, which was transformed into a residential chateau in the 15th century. Burnt down during the Wars of Religion, which were particularly devastating in these Huguenot lands, the house was rebuilt in its current form “jusque a la mesme aulteur que cy devant estoyt” (to the same height as before). At the time, the highly elaborate facades featured six cross windows framed by carvings in the form of Doric, Ionic and Corinthian pilasters. They have now been restored to their original noble appearance thanks to two restoration campaigns undertaken in the 20th century, which remain to be completed. Once again destroyed by fire in the 18th century, the south wing remained in ruins until the 1950s, when the building envelope was completely rebuilt. When the La Fare family decided to join the Court of Versailles a few years before the Revolution, the remaining part of the building passed into the hands of the neighbour, Scipio de Nicolaï, owner of the other chateau in the village. He precipitated the ruin of his new acquisition, not without a certain degree of gloating. It was the family of the current inhabitants who saved the La Fare chateau after acquiring it in 1919. From then on, the chateau was put to all sorts of uses, in turn housing the village brass band, catechism classes and later a wigmaker, who kept powder and curling irons on the premises. As a result of these varied uses, the interior has been fashioned in a way that is quite surprising compared to the appearance of its facades, creating a cheerful structural disorder.

Property with pool Uzès (30)

Magnificent! What more can I say? Everything can be summed up in one word! ... We really loved the friendly and refined beauty of this place, the comfort of the guest accommodation, the delightful swimming pool (6x4m) with overflow, the landscaped areas, the quality of the renovation... a superb and unforgettable stay where the magic happens as soon as you pass the porch and enter the patio, the pool and its fountain and see the harmonious vegetation - serenity and harmony favourable to meditation... Close not only to the medieval city of Uzès, with its exceptional architecture, but also to the most beautiful tourist destinations: the Pont du Gard, the Pope’s Palace in Avignon, the Camargue, the Roman Arena in Nîmes, the Ancient Theatre of Orange and so many other sites. This estate was built in a green setting on a park of 4. 6 hectares (2.4h of which are forest) populated with oak, walnut and plane trees, and it has immense potential for hosting guests, since it has nearly 1600 m² of floor space. The renovation has been optimised with the greatest care to combine comfort and trendy decoration... the owner is delighted to offer lovers a pleasant stay in a place to be discovered as a couple, or with the close or extended family, in the eight stone houses (including one with a private swimming pool) that make up the property, each with its own privativ terrace. Enjoy, relax… you are at home here! The estate also has other assets: vast reception rooms for weddings, seminars, restaurants and catering, as well as a relaxation area for massage and beauty treatments. Not forgetting the two apartments of 40 and 70 m² as well as numerous outbuildings, including a 192m² barn and a 248m² workshop-garage. Whether you are a hiker, an intense sportsman or a nature lover, our beautiful region is full of proposals: kayaking, horse riding, paragliding, golf, hiking, tennis, cycling & mountain biking, via ferrata, nature trails, not forgetting discovering the fauna and flora with specialised guides. A great breath of fresh air, not far from the Provençal market of the Place aux Herbes and its secrets, as Bécaud sang: 'Here is for a hundred francs some thyme from the garrigue, a bit of saffron and a kilo of figs, don't you want a nice tray of peaches or apricots?” And on top of all that, we give you a gift of an accent that goes on and on! There is no need to travel thousands of kilometres to enjoy an unusual location and to pursue and develop a flourishing business. Property with pool Uzès (30)

A Provencal dream. Between Uzès and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this former post house with the appearance of a country house has become, over the course of its history, an imposing, elegant and romantic residence. A place that would have known historical characters, from Catherine de Médicis to Nostradamus, from Cardinal de Richelieu to Queen Margot, or even Louis XIII. When the imposing automatic gate opens, the privileged visitor sees the property's vines (Grenache, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Syrah) and in the background the hills of the garrigue in perspective, then the olive grove (picholines) which gives access to the second gate surrounding the 4000m2 enclosed park. The property consists of a central driveway leading to a large open courtyard, then a preserved and confidential courtyard (with a second direct access to the village through a superb old gate), and allowing access to the main building which stands majestically. On the ground floor, you will be greeted by an entrance that leads to the grand staircase, as well as to the vast reception rooms that have kept their character intact (fireplaces, floor bars, arched windows, double doors, patinas...). Thus, the entrance gives access to the large living room, a vast dining room and an anteroom behind which are hidden service rooms and a secondary staircase. The visit then continues through a rotunda office of rare elegance, and through a very beautiful kitchen area under a stone vault and with a monumental fireplace - still equipped with its restored spit. A fully equipped professional kitchen is also available for receptions or to create an upmarket restaurant. The first floor is composed of 4 suites, including a double suite, spectacular by its volumes and its view on the main courtyard. On the second floor, 3 other suites with their antique floors and fireplaces, still with unique volumes and a beautiful luminosity. And finally, a flat with living room, kitchen, 3 bedrooms, completely independent as well as a suite in the dovecote. The first and oldest part of the house, whose origins date back to the 16th century, is full of character: old stones, square bar floors, French ceilings, fireplaces, a monumental staircase, incredible wrought iron, an old fountain, wells, a classified aqueduct in the park... A piece of history without any doubt. Then, adjoining the old house, a vast vaulted room opens on to the two courtyards, a wine cellar, conveniences and numerous storage spaces. A former barn has been converted into a large vaulted room (ideal as a family room or for seminars), a suite with a terrace on the ground floor, overlooking the vineyards, two large suites on the first floor with two very beautiful terraces, again with a view, and 3 other suites. Finally, there is a large car park, an independent house (5 suites, 2 of which are accessible to the disabled), a magnificent swimming pool area under the hundred-year-old cedars, a vegetable garden and a henhouse. Video surveillance, automatic watering, drilling. To be considered as a fantastic family home, as a home and hospitality business, also as a hotel.

House Uzès (30)

An 18th century village house and its patio in the midst of a biosphere reserve between Avignon and Nîmes. Built around 1750 in the shade of the southern wing of the impressive parish church, on the very site that was once the priest’s garden, this house is now in the historic centre of a quiet Occitan village, with about 1,000 inhabitants. Enclosed by sufficient lush vegetation to temper the stone surroundings of the village centre, this house spans two levels, topped with attic space which could be converted. It has two different entrances: one on the south side, isolated by its own patio off a little-used pedestrian street; and the other, with a semi-circular arch, opening east on to a no-through side road that leads to the church. The southern facade overlooking the patio was constructed from a harmonious mixture of shellstone and an ochre-coloured stone from Vers quarries, the very same that were used by the Romans for the construction of the neighbouring Pont-du-Gard; its facing reflects regular, plain, rectangular stone laid with staggered pointing. The shellstone on the northern facade, which borders the church, is bonded in a more rustic manner and covered with a yellow ochre-coloured rendering. The shady patio is planted with miscellaneous local, fragrant species such as jasmine, honeysuckle and saritea. As the hours pass, light and shade fight over the changing colours of this small area, once a modest courtyard and now a little, lush village garden, its plants pleasantly climbing the four walls protecting the house.

House Uzès (30)

In the French department of Gard, the listed Carthusian monastery of Valbonne and its growing estate founded in 1204. Taking up a small, 43 ha valley which constitutes its forest and vineyard, the Carthusian monastery of Valbonne is a vast property complex, the buildings of which are essentially grouped around 2 courtyards and 2 cloisters in accordance with their original purpose. Founded in 1203 but partially rebuilt and redesigned in the 17th century following the damage caused by the French Wars of Religion, modified and completed in line with its successive uses, the appearance of the monastery nevertheless still resembles its original contours. It was classified as a French historic monument in 1959 and 1974. Although its initial vocation as a place of worship and spirituality is now over, the farm estate has, however, been developed predominantly as a vineyard. At the same time, it is open to the general public for visits and is also part of a hotel and catering activity. History The occupation of what was until then a small, anonymous valley in the heart of a dense forest over one thousand years old began in the 11th century with the construction of a convent for Benedictine nuns. Our-Lady-of-Bondilhon, built in a forest and isolated, became unsafe and was abandoned at the end of the 12th century, having been occupied by the nuns for two centuries. The Bishop of Uzès of the time, Guilhem-de-Vénéjan, worrying about the Cathar heresy spreading amongst the estates belonging to the Count of Toulouse, appealed to the order of Carthusian monks and gave them permission to construct a new monastery in place of the deserted convent. The Order’s 41st house was thus founded on 10 February 1204. Having reclaimed and cleared the land, ten or so monks set up home there. This marshy valley, made fertile through the Carthusian monks’ work, then became “vallis bona” or Valbonne. Conflicts with the neighbouring priory of Saint-Pierre-de-Saint-Saturnin-du-Port in a first instance, followed by looting during the One Hundred Years War and, above all, devastation caused by the Wars of Religion did not spare the new Carthusian monastery. In 1585, it was destroyed, looted and burnt. Monks, sent from the head monastery, began rebuilding it as of 1593. The reconstruction of the Great Cloister and the Entrance Gateway was also started at this time. A new church was then built between 1770 and 1780. The French Revolution in 1789 put an end to the expansion of this community of Carthusian monks. The last father left Valbonne on 1 October 1790. Having become national property and deconsecrated as well as looted once again, Valbonne’s Carthusian monastery then fell into ruin. On 28 January 1836, Carthusian monks bought back the monastery. Restored and completed with new buildings, a community of monks following the Rule of Saint Bruno lived there until 1901. The abandoned building was once again bought at auction in 1926 by Pastor-Philadelphe-Delord who then founded a protestant association for helping victims of tropical diseases there; the ASVMT still owns the monastery.

Situated in the municipality of Saint-Jean-du-Gard, it occupies a commanding position but is in immediate proximity to all the amenities of this iconic little town of the Cévennes National Park. The grounds are supplied with water (mains or borehole) and electricity throughout. A footpath allows direct access to the village.
