In Coudray-Montceaux, a local legend has it that Gabrielle d'Estrées sat on the steps of the monumental staircase known as "La Belle Gabrielle", carved into the slopes above the Château du Bas-Coudray. From there, she admired the view of the Seine while the king hunted nearby. The beautiful horseshoe staircase with balcony and grotto is classified as a historical monument and now belongs to the city. The park of the Château du Bas-Coudray has been divided over time, but one could descend the staircase from the rue de l'Église to the circular fountain that still exists today with its original piping in the castle garden. Gabrielle d'Estrées, very beautiful, was the mistress of Henry IV [king of France (1589-1610)] with whom she had three children. Pregnant with their fourth child, she died in 1599 shortly after Henry IV announced his intention to marry her. Henry IV married Marie de Medicis in 1600, who gave him 6 children, including the future Louis XIII. The first existing mention of the castle dates back to 1578 when it was the property of Jean Tronson, lord of Coudray. When the property was sold in 1665, the staircase and the two fountains were mentioned in the deed of exchange, but it is likely that the staircase was constructed after the assassination of Henry IV in 1610. POSSIBLE DATE OF CONSTRUCTION AFTER 1636 After the death of Jean Tronson, it seems that the lordship passed to another branch of the family. In 1629, the lordship was indeed held by Pierre Champin, husband of Marguerite Tronson. The following year, Louis Tronson and Claude de Sève, his wife, acquired the land of Coudray from the Champin ladies for the sum of seventy thousand livres. As the king’s treasurer and secretary of the king’s cabinet in 1632, Louis Tronson may have been responsible for the construction of the pavilion/castle and the staircase. Unfortunately, this sales document is absent from the notarial records preserved in the departmental archives of Essonne. The absence of this essential document does not allow us to determine the exact date of the castle's construction and of the staircase known as 'La Belle Gabrielle' or the conditions of its detachment from the lordship. A description from 1636 mentioned in the deed of exchange of 1665 refers to a "large house in Bas-Coudray, charged to pay the lordship of Coudray a land rent of twelve Paris deniers, four capons, four chickens, and ten livres Tournois in land rent; it does not mention the garden and its ornaments." Louis XV, the Sun King, king of France from 1643 to 1715, abolished the Paris livre in 1667. Parisian coins were a less stable currency than the livre de Tournon, which was theoretically worth 125% more. In 1634, the toll for crossing on foot the Pont au Double to the Île de la Cité was 2 deniers. The dependency of the castle adjoins the original stables on the neighboring property to the west. Today, the monumental staircase has also lost its purpose in a Renaissance garden attached to a pleasure pavilion. In the notarial acts of 1775, there is mention of a "bedroom of Henry IV", but this may at most reflect a long tradition or simply the existence of a portrait of the king in the house at some time. Castle Etampes (91)
An 18th-century mansion renovated as a hotel, with outbuildings, in 11-hectare wooded grounds boasting a pond, 1 hour 30 minutes from Paris. The estate comes into view at the end of one of the three avenues lined with hundred-year-old elm trees that lead to the grounds and main residence. In the inner courtyard, the property is demarcated by the historic perimeter as already indicated in 1708: “on one side, there is a canal of running water and on the other, five to six acres or so of thickets making up the grounds of the said mansion, which is enclosed by walls, except for the part running along the length of the said canal which serves to delimit the edge of the property at this point”. The residence is made up of a main dwelling flanked by two pavilions and an annex extending forward from one of them. The façades are covered in beige rendering and enhanced by quoins as well as a number of belt courses and moulded cornices that underline each level. The main elevation boasts six vertical rows of openings. The central avant-corps features a large amount of rusticated masonry topped by a triangular pediment with a blocked bullseye window. The steep sloped slate roofs are punctuated with dormer windows. A stoop with a rounded double staircase leads up to the entrance. Lastly, visually aligned with the residence, there are modern outbuildings at the edge of the property, as well as a pond in a wooded area, all within the uninterrupted land of the estate.

Castle Corbeil-Essonnes (91)
A 17th-century chateau and the largest Dominican school of theology in France, with a floor area of approximately 16,000 m² and 8 hectares of grounds, 40 minutes south of Paris. A driveway scattered with lime trees leads to the imposing front door of the former monastery. Divided into two different sections, the property is characterised by the massive heft of its buildings, which emerge abruptly from the verdant environment. The first and largest building represents the former monastery. Built at the beginning of the 1930s at the instigation of the Parisian architect Eugène Chfflot, it stands out thanks to its Art Deco style. During World War II, its construction was halted before it was started back up again around 1956 thanks to the architects Paul Picot and Jean Fayeton. With buhrstone walls punctuated by tall windows, some of which are slender and arched, it has a stepped roof, while the central building is topped with a rooftop terrace, itself crowned with a stylised tower, the stone guardrail of which was designed to resemble crenellations. As for the façades’ different levels, these are adorned with stringcourses, white stone crosses embedded in the walls, columns, pilasters with round bases and plainly-designed capitals. The building thus forms a coherent ensemble, characteristic of recent architecture from the 20th century. The second and oldest building is the chateau. Dating from the 17th century, it was built over the foundations of a modest house constructed in the 16th century and stands out thanks to its classical style, typical of the Grand Siècle. Facing the grounds to the northeast, the plaster-coated, central three-storey building is flanked by two wings connecting two lateral pavilions. With large-paned windows covered by louvred shutters, the building is topped with a hipped slate roof punctuated by hipped dormer windows with rolled eaves. The southwest façade repeats the same configuration, the only difference being that the central dormer window is rounded, decorated with sculpted stone caryatids and secured by a wrought-iron guardrail. Having conserved its initial layout, the chateau was nevertheless remodelled over time by each of its owners – such as Jean-François de Guénégaud, advisor to the King and Puisne Baron of the Courts of Accounts, Guillaume Le Normant d’Etiolles, husband of the Marchioness de Pompadour, as well as Joseph-Michel-Anne Le Soufaché, a great architect during the Second French Empire – who built various private Parisian mansions commissioned by aristocratic or bourgeois families, like the one owned by the Montesquiou-Fézensacs on the Quai d’Orsay or the Sommiers at 20 rue de l’Arcade in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, now the Hôtel Alfred Sommier. Surrounded by verdant grounds of approximately 8 hectares, the property is entirely fenced in.

Castle Viry-chatillon (91)
A 195 m² flat with its original decor and garden, in an 18th century chateau, 30 minutes south of Paris. Hidden from view, the chateau can be made out through an impressive wrought iron gate, which opens on to the main courtyard. The building features a classical architectural style and is aligned with the path of the sun. Some historical documents mention the 15th-century fiefdom that once extended over these grounds. Rebuilt in the 18th century, the chateau was acquired in the mid-19th century by Auguste Lamy and Cécile Kuhlmann. Auguste Lamy (1820-1878), physicist and chemist, Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, was instrumental in the discovery of thallium. He was also a director of the Kuhlmann industrial group established by his father-in-law Charles Frédéric Kuhlmann, founder of Crédit du Nord. The property was owned by the family until 1946. The chateau reflects the pure classical style typical of the second half of the 18th century. It comprises three storeys over a cellar. On the eastern side, the building consists of a central section flanked by two wings set at right angles. The main door, accessed via a flight of stone steps with two accesses and a wrought-iron banister, completes the overall symmetry. The entrance is surrounded by three windows on either side, two of which stand proud of the wings. The first floor, illuminated by nine openings protected by wrought iron railings, is topped by a second upper level in the roofspace featuring three domed zinc roof dormers with carved wings. The hipped slate roof features ridge finials. The western facade, overlooking the grounds, follows the same layout as the one on the street side, with one exception: the addition of a central semi-circular porch topped with pear-shaped stone balusters, which opens onto a vast lawn bordered by a variety of trees. The flat is located in the southern section of the chateau and extends over the entire ground floor and part of the first floor. It comprises two sitting rooms, three bedrooms and various other rooms awaiting conversion. The parklands at the back stretch out to an oval pool featuring a statue inspired by the sculpture of ancient Greece as the focal point of its verdant plant theatre stage. The commonhold consists of four flats and the only shared areas are the landings on the different levels and the grounds.
