Contact us today and step into a world of elegance, comfort, and endless possibilities.  Seller Insight  How long have you owned the property?   “3 and a half wonderful years.” What attracted you to this specific house and location?   “We fell in love with the house, with its mix of historical character and charm with more modern living spaces for comfortable family living. Even though it is a large house, with spectacular outdoor space and a beautiful garden, it also feels very homely. We also loved the fact that the house, while remaining peaceful and secluded, is in the heart of a thriving and friendly community, minutes from the centre of Liverpool.” What would you like to tell parents about the benefits of raising children here?   “The house offers so much for children. There is ample space for indoor playing (hide and seek a favourite) and the children enjoy the excitement of being able to use the cinema with friends or for family movie nights. The swimming pool and the versatile, large but contained garden allow them to burn off energy outside. There are large bedrooms for the kids to enjoy but we love the fact that given there are four bedrooms on one floor, we remain close to each other at night. It is the perfect house for hosting, especially at Christmas when the house really comes into its own, so the children have benefited from having family and friends with us often.” What can you tell us about the history of the property and how it has been adapted since you’ve owned it?  “The house was designed and commissioned back in the 1920's by a famous shipping family, the Holts and we have the original architectural drawings framed and up on the wall. They seemed like a very welcoming family as there are newspaper cut outs about local children being invited into the house to use the lift which we are told was the first residential one of its kind. The house still retains features of its shipping heritage with unique porthole windows in the grand hallway and the old bell system, now made electronic, throughout the rooms. We have adapted the house to make it work better for a family, with the snug becoming a playroom. We have had the gates expertly restored by a local carpenter, we also replaced the boiler with a modern, efficient system to ensure the original part of the house remained cosy and warm through the winter. The water features in the garden were also made child safe.” Who do you think would be the ideal next owner?  “The unique thing about Axholme is that it would work for many types of owners. A large family needing extra space, intergenerational families given the potential for separate living in the annexe, or for a smaller family such as a couple who love to host gatherings or benefit from leisure facilities. The house is move in ready, but it also might suit an owner who wants to adapt the house to suit their needs and style such as adding an upstairs balcony to look over the garden.”  What’s your favourite room and why?  “Each member of the family would answer differently. For the children, the sunken trampoline and zip wire in the garden would be their favourite feature but as our daughter gets a little older, she loves her own space in her bedroom and the ample space for sleepovers. As a couple, one of us would choose the large patio outside the kitchen as it is a great hosting space and a sun trap from early to late in the year. The other one of us would choose the characterful drawing room where you can read a book in front of the fire and place the most amazing Christmas tree in the bay window. Another personal favourite for us all is the circular bench at the back of the garden under the largest tree in the garden, from which you can look back on the house while listening to the pond's waterfall.” Memorable/remarkable event?  “Too many to list, including legendary New Years parties, milestone birthday celebrations, frequent family barbeques and most recently hosting a family wedding in marquees designed to take in the beauty of the garden space. Christmas is also of course the highlight of each year.“ What do you love about the house the most now?  “That it feels like a personal and peaceful sanctuary, away from the busyness of life while always feeling like home. Also, that it has become the heart of our wider family as it is the perfect home to get everyone together.“ What do you love about the local community?  “It is such a friendly, welcoming community with such lovely neighbours. We also love that the quaint village of Oxton is so close and that we are close to excellent schools and children's activities. Living on the Wirral also offers us as a family so much access to walks and nature. We regularly enjoy trips to the beach, woods and farms in the local area.” What you’ll miss most?  “We love the area and community so much that we do not intend to move far so we don't have to miss out on that. But we will miss the homely grandeur of the house and the flexibility to host many gatherings, and most of all the garden as well as the light that pours into our living spaces.” Additional Information  Services: Mains water, electricity, gas and drainage. This striking home, complemented by a separate cottage and lodge, benefits from private driveway parking, a double garage, and uninterrupted views across open countryside. Originally built around 1728 as a hunting retreat for the Rothschild family, the property occupies a peaceful, secluded setting while still being conveniently close to village amenities and transport links. Situated at the end of a sweeping, tree-lined drive, the house enjoys total privacy within its parkland-style gardens and paddocks. The main building, a handsome double-fronted flint and brick house with Georgian box sash windows and a hipped, clay-tiled roof, still retains many original 18th-century features. Elegant arched sash windows echo the Georgian period styling, with the welcoming entrance framed by a classic portico supported by ionic columns and a traditional fanlight above the door. Inside the Main House The home boasts approximately 5,062 sq. ft. of versatile living space arranged over four floors, with a sympathetic 1970s extension matching the original architecture. Ground Floor: The grand front door leads into a bright lobby and hallway with the sweeping central staircase. Reception rooms include the elegant drawing room — featuring floor-to-ceiling sash windows, original coving, and a grand fireplace — and the former dining room (now a treatment room), both showcasing classic period details. The impressive kitchen/breakfast room is accessed through the boot room or directly from the drive via stone balustraded steps. Fitted with bespoke Mark Wilkinson cabinetry and high-end appliances, the kitchen flows into a dining area beneath a vaulted ceiling, with French doors opening onto the gardens. Lower Ground Floor: Originally housing the kitchens and sculleries, the lower ground floor now features a spacious home office with bespoke cabinetry, panelled walls, and Travertine flooring. The family bathroom features traditional styling with tongue-and-groove panelling and a classic high-level WC. Second Floor: At the top of the house is a charming fifth bedroom — likely once the servants’ quarters — with a dormer window and an en suite bathroom tucked into the eaves. Additional Accommodation The Cottage: Providing around 1,415 sq. ft., the cottage includes a double garage with power and electric doors. Internally, there’s a kitchen/living room with French doors, two bedrooms (one on each floor), and two shower rooms. It can easily be divided into two self-contained units if desired. The Lodge: A single-storey property with flint and brick elevations, the lodge requires some refurbishment but offers a further kitchen/living room, bathroom, and bedroom — ideal for guests or additional income potential. Outhouses: Various external outbuildings include a laundry room, multiple storerooms, a second boiler room, and a dog kennel. The oil tank is conveniently located for easy access. Gardens and Paddocks The property is approached via electrically operated wrought iron gates opening to a gravel drive. Features such as a circular pavilion and a charming dovecote enhance the picturesque feel of the estate. In collaboration with the current owners and local builder Richard Dowers, the property reflects a bespoke vision that blends contemporary open-plan living with a wonderful connection to the open fields that sit beyond the home.   From the moment you arrive, the property impresses with its understated cedar-clad exterior, which conceals approximately 3,000 sq. ft. of meticulously designed living space. A private gated entrance opens onto a gravel driveway, offering ample parking and access to the detached double garage, complete with power, and an electric door. The spacious open-plan living and dining area flows seamlessly into a high-specification kitchen featuring top-brand appliances, including Neff double ovens, a microwave, and a coffee machine. A built-in Airforce induction hob with an integrated rising extractor and high-end finishes ensures this kitchen is as functional as it is stylish. Adjacent to the kitchen is a useful utility room, with a large plant room and separate cloakroom. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors from the spacious dining area open onto a paved terrace, with a heated infinity pool at its center—a true highlight for entertaining or simply enjoying on peaceful summer days.   The property offers three beautifully appointed bedroom suites, each with its own character and purpose. Two ground-floor guest bedrooms feature en-suite shower rooms and access to private courtyards, ensuring privacy and comfort for visitors. The principal suite, elevated at the rear of the home, includes a luxurious en-suite bathroom, a large dressing room, and a stunning wall of windows that create a floating-in-the-trees effect, making it the perfect retreat to unwind and take in the local wildlife.   The lower ground floor is a versatile space with its own entrance and shower room, making it ideal for use as a self-contained annex, home office, or additional living area. Currently fitted with a bar area, for entertaining and use as a games room, this area has been cleverly designed to allow for easy conversion into separate accommodation if desired. The attenuation pond adds a functional and ecological benefit in its design, located at the rear of the plot.     WHAT THE OWNER SAYS:   Strathwell House has enabled us to enjoy being in the heart of Whitwell village’s vibrant community whilst nestled in a quiet rural plot that affords far reaching views of the surrounding downs. It has been a great home that was designed to be sociable and in which to host and entertain our family and friends.   Our historic village pub The White Horse Inn, is a couple of minutes’ walk away and is popular with visitors and locals alike. It has been a great place to make new friends and to socialise.   The neighbouring village of Niton has all the facilities we need day to day and is but a two-minute drive from Whitwell or an easy 20-minute walk away. Ventnor is our nearest town and has some great restaurants and pubs offering a wide range of cuisines. The town also offers a variety of locally owned independent shops that we love to support.   The footpaths and bridleways that criss-cross the village enable us to access the nearby cliff paths and to walk up to the surrounding downland where we enjoy spectacular island wide views when walking our friendly dog. Being close to the island’s southern Jurassic coastline stretching from Sandown to Freshwater means that living in Whitwell we enjoy easy access to some fantastic beaches.   Living on an island that has a tourism focus means that we and our visitors have a host of exciting and interesting activities to enjoy.

Air conditioning ensures comfort throughout. This space opens into an orangery with ceiling lanterns and windows to three sides, including bi-folding doors onto the rear terrace. Double doors from the kitchen also lead to the informal entrance lobby and a dedicated leisure wing. This area offers excellent flexibility and could easily be adapted for use as an annexe. There are four bedrooms, including an exceptional principal suite with air conditioning and two sets of bi-folding doors opening onto the rear garden. The real showpiece, however, is the incredible dressing room — fully fitted and thoughtfully designed, with extensive hanging and drawer storage, a central island with seating and integrated cabinetry, and soft lighting that elevates the experience. It provides both luxury and functionality in equal measure. Leading off the dressing room is a truly indulgent en-suite bathroom, featuring a freestanding bath and a spacious walk-through wet room shower — a spa-style sanctuary within the home. The three remaining bedrooms are all generous doubles and are served by a high-quality family bathroom. Step Outside The property is approached via a large composite gate, electrically operated with a GSM intercom system, ensuring both privacy and ease of access. The gate opens onto a broad, sweeping driveway that leads to a substantial triple garage block, each bay fitted with an electric roller door big enough to accommodate modern luxury SUV’s. The gardens have been thoughtfully designed and beautifully maintained, wrapping around the property to provide a range of spaces for leisure and relaxation. The front and side gardens include a greenhouse and raised vegetable beds, while the rear garden is laid mainly to lawn and offers uninterrupted views across farmland to the village church. A wide flagged patio stretches across the rear of the home, providing ample space for al fresco dining or outdoor entertaining, with provision in place for a hot tub or swim spa. Many of the main rooms open directly onto this space, enhancing the home’s connection to its surroundings. A key feature is the impressive detached oak-framed gazebo, constructed in brick and timber beneath a tiled canopy. It houses a fully equipped outdoor kitchen, complete with a pizza oven, barbecue with rotisserie, double fridge, side burner, and hot and cold water. A feature brick fireplace with open grate creates a cosy focal point for cooler evenings, while dedicated areas for dining and lounging make this a true extension of the home.

Set behind private gates on one of the largest and most private plots in the entire development, the approach alone sets the tone. A sweeping block paved driveway leads to the impressive front elevation, with its signature twin bay windows, full width first floor balcony and portico entrance. To the right, the detached triple garage building completes a frontage that is genuinely grand in scale and stature. Extending to approximately 3,800 sq ft across the main house, with additional accommodation in the outbuilding above the garage, this is a home that offers an extraordinary amount of versatile living space for a family of any size. The Entrance Step through the front door and the split staircase immediately makes a statement. Rising to a galleried landing above a generous and light filled entrance hall, the architecture here is impressive and the quality of finish is evident from the very first moment. This is a home that was built to impress and has been lovingly maintained and updated throughout. Ground Floor The ground floor offers an exceptional range of reception space, providing real flexibility for how a family chooses to live. The formal lounge, measuring an impressive 26 by 11 feet, is a wonderfully generous room with a feature fireplace, crystal chandelier and bay window flooding the space with natural light. Fitted with sleek gloss cabinetry, dramatic marble effect worktops and splashbacks, a generous central island with bar seating, and a professional range cooker, it is a kitchen designed for serious cooking and serious entertaining in equal measure. Underfloor heating runs throughout the kitchen and dining areas, and French doors open directly onto the rear garden patio for seamless indoor to outdoor flow. Two conservatories extend the ground floor living space further still. The larger, measuring nearly 18 by 10 feet, wraps around the rear of the home and provides a wonderful everyday space overlooking the garden. A second conservatory adds yet another versatile room to an already exceptional ground floor. A well appointed utility room finished to the same high standard as the kitchen, alongside a ground floor WC, complete the practical side of the ground floor offering. First Floor The galleried landing is a genuinely impressive space, broad, light filled and beautifully presented, with views down into the entrance hall below. Five well proportioned bedrooms are arranged across the first floor, each offering comfortable and generous accommodation. The principal suite benefits from built in wardrobes, a private en suite shower room and direct access to the full width balcony at the front of the house, a truly special feature that looks out over the gated approach and the mature trees and greenery surrounding the development. A further en suite and a separate shower room serve the remaining bedrooms, alongside a well appointed family bathroom. The Outbuilding Above the detached garage, a substantial games room measuring nearly 19 by 29 feet provides an outstanding flexible space. Whether used as a home cinema, gym, teenage retreat, home office suite or guest accommodation, the potential of this room is enormous. The garage itself provides a double garage with an additional store room alongside. Outside The rear garden is a genuinely impressive outdoor space. A large entertaining patio sits immediately off the kitchen and conservatory, with a charming pergola seating area providing a shaded spot for outdoor dining. The lawn extends generously behind, bordered by established planting, mature trees and timber fencing that creates real privacy and seclusion throughout. Viewed from above in the drone photography, the scale of this plot is immediately apparent. It is one of the largest in the development and provides a wonderful outdoor setting for family life throughout the year.
