House Campo de Besteiros (Portugal)
Quinta da Cruz is located in a National Ecological Reserve, on the southern slope of Serra do Caramulo, a privileged place for sun exposure, for the surrounding nature with watercourses and vegetation, where chestnut trees and oaks dominate. Through the walled path, referenced by a monumental centenary eucalyptus tree, you can discover the built volumes of rare architectural beauty of the Manor House, Mother House and Annexes. A charming hotel was even approved for this property. The land has an area of 238,575 m2, with a land occupation area of 1,855 m2, which corresponds to the land use coefficient (implantation index) of 0.007. The total construction area is 3,344 m2. A stone cross (cruzeiro) gives the name to the Quinta and marks the entrance to it. We follow a narrow path, delimited by finely cut stone walls, which leads us to the Manor House, with the monumental centenary eucalyptus as a natural reference element. The Mother House is formed by a sequence of volumes and built spaces, expanded over time according to the needs and importance of the family that has inhabited it throughout its history. The primitive nucleus of the Manor House may be prior to the century. Given the architectural characteristics of the old kitchen with the fireplace and ovens. The main façade, facing south, opens onto the yard, from where you can see the Serra da Estrela and the Campo de Besteiros Valley. With a careful analysis, it is possible to distinguish three distinct eras. The construction of the century. XVI, on the right, is marked by the imposing staircase with a volute finish, giving access to the main entrance door on the 1st floor, flanked by five rectangular windows at the top with rounded jambs. On the ground floor there are two larger doors, one leading to the patio and the other to the cellar. The extension of the century. XVIII, in the center, is marked by the balcony and the construction of the late century. XVIII and early century. It is contained by pilasters in granite stone, highlighting the chapel topped by a triangular pediment. On a more remote plane is the volume of the sacristy. The interior of the Chapel is in total ruin due to a fire that broke out in it. The north façade is marked by the austerity of the granite stone masonry, being accentuated by the protection of the openings with iron railings, developing on a single floor marked by the highest volume of the fireplace. An outdoor staircase located in the courtyard gives access to this space, once landscaped, with entrances to the service patio and annexes, water tanks and an old garden of bucho and camellias. The west façade is composed of the saloon house and a set of annexes that are in complete ruin, resulting in stone walls, in which their previous function is almost not understood. The view of the Serra do Caramulo and the sound of the water line that crosses the property is stunning. The east façade, similar to what happens on the north façade, visually presents a single floor, with the openings protected by iron railings. It has a privileged view of the Cruzeiro and the old camellia alley. A set of annexes forms the volume of the winery with the respective lagares. Next to the monumental eucalyptus, we find a small annex of the old mill, as well as the 'L' building with the old stables and storage, where the apartments are to be installed. Abandonment and ruin are the image and the current state of conservation of the built architectural complex, while maintaining an imposing stately image that urgently needs to be restored. House Luso (Portugal)
In Luso, in the Bairrada region, a former 19th-century post office converted into a house of around 240 m². The post no longer passes through here. But something of that original purpose remains within the walls: the idea that a building can be the fixed point around which life is organised. Casa dos Correios has stood on Luso’s main thoroughfare since the 19th century, opposite the Parish Council and the Tourist Office. A building that already knew what it wanted to be.
