Located about twenty kilometers from Marrakech in the direction of the Atlas Mountains, the site offered, by its proximity, an impressive view of the panorama of the mountains with their snow-capped ridges.
The 4-hectare plot of land, which was initially agricultural and therefore perfectly flat, did not present, apart from its location, any characteristics that could be exploited and suggested a potentially embarrassing interaction with the neighbourhood.
This went against the owner's major desire to preserve his privacy as much as possible, by excluding buildings that would be visible from the outside.
The Architect, passionate about Land Art and captivated by the challenge, therefore proposed to invest first in the topography of the place, by creating vast ground movements. The significant excavated material from a large central depression sheltering, in addition to the main house, a 5000 m² lake and a 50 m long swimming pool offered as many embankments, pushed back towards the limits of the land and thus making it possible to hide the latter.
Thus, from the residence, hidden from view, was offered the unique spectacle of the lakes, set in the slopes wooded with hundred-year-old olive trees and carpeted with a wild meadow skilfully maintained... with the Atlas as the crowning glory.
Once this setting was set, the architecture had to be minimal, non-discursive and nourished by the climatic particularities of Marrakech.
Thus, the owner's wish not to reproduce the archetypes of traditional architecture in these places allowed the Architect a resolutely contemporary expression.
Climatic constraints, instead of slowing down architectural creativity, became the driving force in an ecological process.
The proximity of the south (hot) and north (cold) facades, induced by the long shape of the main building, thus provided it with a natural conditioning by convection.
This, combined with rigorous thermal insulation, considerably reduced unnecessary energy costs while allowing large bay windows opening onto deep terraces. To the south: sheltered from the sun by a large cap in the shape of an airplane wing and to the north: cooled by the presence of the pools.
The apparent simplicity of the volumes discreetly underpins the extreme sophistication of all the technical devices (underfloor heating, reversible air conditioning, heated swimming pool, etc.)
The only concession to vernacular architecture and as a counterpoint, the water features refer to the atmosphere of hammams by their design and the use of tadelakt.--
