The site of the Chateau of Veauce has existed since the Gallo-Roman period, and springs still containing water from that era are visible in one of the castle cellars. In the 9th century, the chateau served as the summer residence of Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, Emperor and King of the Franks.
