House Chatillon (92)

A stunning, elegantly renovated gritstone 'maison de caractère' on the outskirts of Fontenay-aux-Roses and Clamart, 15 minutes from Paris. Built around 1930, this residence, designated a 'house with character' by the local authority, stands on a plot of land of around 360 m². Comprising three storeys plus a basement and featuring different square and rectangular sections, it boasts a facade of gritstone, dressed stone and beige brick. The wealth of colours, designs and materials used to create this distinctive building is unrivalled in the surrounding area. The frontage is adorned with glazed turquoise blue and red brickwork and Art Nouveau-style coloured ceramic tiles on the window lintels and features corner quoins, a central frieze with fine foliage and floral motifs, as well as stringcourses between the floors and the cornice. The windows, with their segmental or basket arches, are mostly evenly spaced and symmetrical, or centred on the narrower facades of the projecting sections. The windows are protected by finely wrought iron railings with scrolls and foliage motifs and fitted with folding metal shutters painted dark grey. The overhanging slate roof, either gable or pavilion-shaped depending on the section, emphasises the composition of the residence, which is made up of different parts and projecting sections, with varying heights and facades. The boundary wall, the wrought iron fence and the entrance gate, damaged during previous works, will soon be restored to their original condition. Separated from the street by a first area planted with trees and flowers, a few stone approach steps provide access to the house. The solid oak entrance door, glazed and protected by wrought-iron grilles, is topped by a transom window, which has been rebuilt to match the original, retaining the existing ironwork. The old canopy has been replaced by a reclaimed one that blends in perfectly with the facade. It is topped by a small stone balcony on brackets with pear-shaped balusters on the first floor. To the rear, accessed from indoors and either side of the house, a 200 m² garden planted with trees and sheltered from prying eyes is bordered by two terraces and two lean-tos.

House Chatillon (92)

A belle époque burrstone house with a garden and annexe in Châtillon town centre, just south of Paris. The house is just a few minutes’ walk from Châtillon’s old heart and shops. It has a ground floor, a first floor and a second floor. The dwelling is set back from the road, on a plot of around 600m². It was built in 1908. The building is part of a preserved series of three houses designed by the architect Léon Mériot, who worked a lot in this area: France’s Haut-de-Seine department. Mériot was a public architect and surveyor for the town of Châtillon. He later worked privately until 1911. He also designed many holiday homes on the coast of Normandy, in Mesnil-Val and Criel-sur-Mer. The house is made of burrstone. It is typical of the Paris region’s built heritage from the period between 1880 and 1930. The dwelling reflects the spirit of rural holiday homes owned by wealthy Parisians. Its facade, which wisteria climbs up, features two wooden balconies, red brickwork, ceramic embellishments and green enamel ornamentation. The roof is covered with interlocking tiles and crowned with terracotta finials. Together with the zinc works, it was fully renovated in 2019. The house has two upper floors that an oak staircase leads to. The ceiling heights are comfortable at each level. The dwelling offers a liveable floor area of around 155m². It has a double reception room, a spacious kitchen with a garden-facing dining area, an office, five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a lavatory on each floor. A basement extends beneath the whole house. It includes a vaulted wine cellar. A large terrace beside a summer kitchen lies at the foot of the dwelling’s rear elevation and leads to a tree-dotted garden with a lean-to. Lastly, on one side of the garden, there is an annexe with a floor area of around 70m² at the same level as the garden. The entire property needs to be renovated.

Property Fontenay-aux-Roses (92)

In Fontenay-aux-Roses, an elegant private mansion in need of renovation. Located near the city centre, on a calm street, surrounded by historical houses and residences, the property has attracted artists and intellectuals from all backgrounds thanks to its overwhelming charm. Built in 1860 in the middle of a verdant garden, it was the home to a famous dissident Russian writer from the 1970s up until today. The private mansion, which has not been changed in decades, is simply waiting to find its lustre once again. The three-storey stone façade is topped with a balustrade, vestiges of a probable rooftop terrace, now replaced by a zinc roof. Classical ornamental features characterise the entire building: bossages adorn the ground floor, a stringcourse highlights the first floor, while a dentilled cornice decorates the second; the windows, with surrounds decorated with delicate mouldings, are all aligned and symmetrically distributed around the axis of the wood and wrought-iron double-door on the ground floor. The front door is set back from the front steps, which can be accessed on either side of the stone guardrail. In the middle of the façade and overlooking the entrance, a balcony on brackets is adorned with a wrought-iron balustrade. The house includes a ground floor with an office, living room, a kitchen overlooking the garden, as well as a workshop. The two upstairs floors contain bedrooms with the possibility of converting some of them into larger rooms with en-suite bathrooms. The cellar, remarkable in its size, has two storage areas, including a well and a vaulted cellar, worthy of the greatest of winegrowers. Running alongside the property is a pedestrian path and a quiet street. Preceded by a garden decorated with a fountain, there is also a garage where a car can be parked, on the street side. An opulent wisteria vine festoons the façade, while, in the back, the outside area is punctuated with magnolias, lilacs and other bountiful varieties of shrubbery.
