In Avignon, on Place Crillon, in an 18th-century mansion, an entirely renovated apartment of approximately 170 m². Nothing, except for the grand classicism of the facade, indicates the presence of this mansion. The sober design of this architectural façade seems to have the sole mission of showcasing Thomas Lainé's masterpiece, the 'Ancienne Comédie'. Its facade, dominated by a radiant head of Apollo, is adorned with four Ionic pilasters supporting an entablature with a triangular pediment and a balustrade enhanced by four vases simulating fire pots. The theatricality of the elevation imposes its law on the entire square, with this baroque jewel being the dominant element. It has often changed its purpose but has always retained its luminous sculpted facade, directly visible from some windows of the apartment. Far from being frozen in time, this architecture resembling an opera set is now animated by a multitude of restaurants and cafes that, when summer arrives, become one of the favorite refuges for festival-goers. The mansion, rather low, in compliance with regulations that mandated not exceeding the height of the city walls, rises two stories under a crenelated cornice highlighting a roof of canal tiles. It presents its cut stone facade under a broken white plaster. Transformed in the 19th century for commercial use, the former porch and the grand courtyard are today occupied by a restaurant with a terrace. The building comprises one apartment per floor, making it a small condominium. Located on the second floor, this apartment is organized on one side into a kitchen and a bedroom with a mezzanine, which overlook the square, and on the other side into a spacious living room, three additional bedrooms, and three bathrooms which face south away from the square with its terraces. This description has been automatically translated from French.

The “Mas de la Brune”, a listed, Renaissance-style gem, its 4 ha of parklands and its gardens at the foot of the Alpilles mountains in Eygalières. At the end of a row of two-hundred-year-old horse chestnut trees, three interconnected constructions comprise the buildings on this predominantly wooded, 4-ha property. The first is the Renaissance-style manor house, known as the “Mas de la Brune”, constructed in 1572; the only building of this type, standing in the middle of the land, rising up like a nave, proudly showing visitors the prow of its watch-turret. Directly adjoining the manor, a more recent construction dating from the 18th century stands in the shade of a three-hundred-year-old lime tree. This building once housed the staff accommodation. And lastly, on the east side, where a perimeter wall no doubt once existed, a rehabilitated farmhouse is separated from the manor by a row of cypress trees. Opening on to a vast courtyard that extends behind the French formal garden, it acts as a link with the rest of the parklands, where the permanent singing of the precious water, coming down from the Alpilles Mountains via the canal of the same name, can be heard. The French Historic Monument listing, dating from the 9 August 1924, applies solely to the “Mas de la Brune”, already showing on Cassini’s 18th century map under the name of “Grand Mas”. Some say it was constructed for the consul Pierre-Bruno-Isnard, who gave it the feminine version of his surname, whilst others maintain it was for an alchemist, whose name is long forgotten. In both cases, this outstanding building, entirely constructed from Baux stone, was probably built by master mason, Gaston-Flayelle, native of the Vivarais region, who also designed the “Hôtel de Manville” in Les-Baux-de-Provence. The size of the manor house, its biblical paraphrases sculpted on the façade, like a big open book, and including the secret number of steps of its spiral stairway tend to reinforce the hypothesis of an alchemist’s home. A spacious tiled swimming pool, cleverly concealed from onlookers in a copse of laurel bushes, has been installed a good distance from the main house. And lastly, a carpark, out of sight of the manor but able to take ten or so cars, has been laid out in the shade of mulberry plane trees.

An eighteenth-century Provençal house 15 minutes from Orange TGV station, in the historical county of Venaissin with 2.4 hectares of wooded grounds and a view of Mount Ventoux. This property was once part of a vast, plain, farming estate, of which it still has 2.4 ha of land. The constructions stand on the north-east side of its land on a knoll, circumvented by a meander of the Carpentras canal, marking the northern limit. The main entrance, leading to a courtyard, is provided by gates on the south-west side, facing the estate’s land. On the north-east side, a high wall, lined with unsquared surface limestone, encloses the courtyard; a little door in this perimeter wall makes it possible to reach an outstanding stand of oak trees, on the north slope, bordered by the canal. The main building is a traditional Provençal country house, constructed at the end of the 18th century, even the beginning of the 19th century, probably on the foundations of an earlier construction, notably visible in the enclosed courtyard courtesy of the vestiges of old blocked up windows. It spans two levels and faces southwards over the courtyard. It is symmetrically and harmoniously composed and topped with a triple overhanging cornice, forming the eaves. Its lime-rendered walls feature aligned openings, framed with painted surrounds, enhanced with red edging. The north-east corner of the country house features a wide, drop arch, carriage door, topped with a virtually square opening, indicating a probable reconstruction of the country house’s east gable or a vestige of an earlier construction. A square, single-storey pavilion, topped with a roof terrace, bears witness to an earlier building, possibly a 2-storey dovecote. Reached via steps on the west facade, it marks the southern limit of the country house. It is extended by a terraced area, supported by a dry-stone wall, containing a swimming pool that closes the courtyard. And lastly, the parklands extend over the top of the open area to the south of the courtyard. Planted with Mediterranean species, notably convoluted pine trees, they still include some decoratively trimmed boxwood and a masonry well, topped with a local limestone dome.

A 200-m² 1952 Freycinet barge to be renovated, converted into an artist’s studio, with a terrace on the deck, anchored on the River Rhône in Avignon. Freycinet sized barges, which are an integral part of water transport’s history, draw their name from the European Freycinet standard governing the dimension of locks and canals since 1879, with which they comply. Such river boats must not exceed 38.5 metres in length and 5 metres in width, like this venerable old lady that has seen 73 spring times. She was made in the Waechter shipyards near Antwerp in 1952 and bears the moniker ‘Bestiole’. Her upper deck can be reached by a metal swing gangway, linking the former tow path, now densely covered with foliage, to a metal security gate, after which there is a walkway leading to the barge’s rail. It was restored in the 1980s, during which the hold was transformed into a workshop and the forecastle into living space. It now boasts two decks of living quarters with a total surface of approximately 200 m². The upper deck is comprised of a teak-deck platform with a small swimming pool, above a forecastle transformed into living space, linked to the rear quarters and the wheelhouse. The interior can be reached via three separate entrances: one at the bow leading to the upper and lower decks, another at the stern near the wheelhouse above the sailors’ quarters and the last through the glazed opening in the forecastle. The upper deck is separated into two parts: the wheelhouse, which still boasts mahogany woodwork, bevelled mirrors, plus1950s copper handles, and, at the front, a section converted in the 1980s into a vast and bright living room with a view of the river and city. The wood panelled walls and fairly generous ceiling height of more than 2 metres perpetuate the ambiance of the 1950s part. The kitchen, with an old cooker riveted to the floor as if refusing point blank to abandon ship, separates the forecastle from the quarter deck. An ample staircase descends to the lower deck which was formerly the hold but is today an approximately 60-m² artist’s studio, standing between the water’s reflection to port and the green riverbanks to starboard. Four cabins with en suite shower rooms can be reached via an interior corridor into which light streams through portholes. Beneath a painted metal ceiling, there are wooden floorboards. The portholes, windows and patio doors are double glazed. The boat is approved as ‘water-worthy’ according to its up-to-date compulsory technical assessment. Its engine is in fine condition and it possesses all the required gear and tackle.
