In Alentejo, between cork oaks and vast fields out of sight, arises this magnificent work of housing art, with a splendid view and with nature as the surrounding scenery, which brings to the countryside the strength of modern architecture.
Estate, with 9 ha, located 14 km away from Beja, with all the cork oak forest involving the main house, which forces us to hear the silence of nature and where it is possible to feel all the peace and silence of Alentejo and contemplate all the stars and constellations, in an immense sky.
The house was designed by one of the greatest architects of Contemporary Architecture, Bartolomeu da Costa Cabral and idealized by the owners, so that it was something different, always privileging the
nature.
This unique and spectacular property is composed by a main house with 3 bedrooms, a suite, living room, fully equipped kitchen, salted water swimming pool, two large dimensioned ateliers and two more agricultural support houses.
One of the main features of the house is to be self-sufficient. The thermal control of the roof is ensured by a 5 cm layer of water protected by insulating slabs, with a fan device designed to increase the evaporation of water during the summer by cooling the water and the house, and during the winter this air box remains enclosed so that the insulation of the boards work as a protection from the cold.
It has own water through a borehole, photovoltaic electricity panels, hot water through solar panels, sewage pit and central heating with a diesel boiler. It also has a cistern for collecting rainwater, for the irrigation network and eventual reserve.
The place, the construction in mud and the program are the roots of the design of this house, whose program was defined in response to the needs and desires of the family, concretized from the beginning in a list of desires, not only functional, but also the environment of the house itself. Throughout the design process and its construction, the house benefited from a close collaboration of the owners, a couple of artists, being she a ceramist and he a sculptor and painter. The choice of construction in mud appeared as evidence due to the climatic aspects, the defence of the Alentejo heat, creating an environment with thermal inertia, and also because it is a traditional technique suitable for a building with only one floor. The beauty of the place and its isolation, being the house situated inside a large dimensioned property, constituted strong stimuli for the definition of the project that is a response to the surrounding nature.
