A 152m² apartment bathed in natural light with five bedrooms and a partial sea view, nestled on the third floor of an edifice in the old town centre of Hyères in the south of France. The edifice towers in the Godillot district of Hyères. This area enjoyed a golden age from 1860 to 1890. The neighbourhood is located in the heart of Hyères, which, in the 19th century, drew wealthy Britons and members of the French upper-middle class under the reign of Napoleon III. The district is near the ramparts of the medieval centre and at the foot of the famous Costebelle hill. A broad avenue leads to the square where the edifice stands. The majestic building has a ground floor with four floors above it. It lies at a street corner where two roads meet. The edifice was built in around 1880, designed by the architect Pierre Chapoulard for the French entrepreneur and factory owner Alexis Godillot. It was named ‘La Tour Jeanne’ (‘The Jeanne Tower’) for its half-protruding round tower that gives its south-east corner a gentle edge. The decor of the facade is eclectic in style. It was designed with a concern for balance and ornamental wealth. There are ceramic tiles in patterns around some windows on the third floor; finely sculpted entablatures and window surrounds; doric and ionic pilasters separating the different bays; a female bust of elegantly sculpted white stone above the entrance door; neatly dressed quoins; stringcourses with mouldings; cornices with dentils; continuous balconies and small balconies of stone with beautifully sculpted corbels and wrought-iron balustrades; and, on the top floor, stone balusters and a broken-apex pediment. The entrance hall is characteristic of Haussmannian-style apartment buildings with its glazed door beneath a fanlight, its floor of cement tiles and its richly embellished ceiling. This hallway leads to a marble staircase that winds up around a lift shaft. On each floor there are only two apartments. And in the basement there are cellars.
