Castle Segré-en-Anjou Bleu (49)

A family chateau where a famous novelist lived, tucked away in the beautiful countryside of France’s Anjou province. The chateau stands in the shade of age-old trees that tower in English-style grounds. The edifice was recently restored. Its roofing, insulation, electricity, plumbing, windows and sanitation system were renovated. Its 40-metre-long facade stretches from north to south. The chateau has a main section with dual-aspect rooms. This section is framed between a pavilion at its north end and a second pavilion at its south end. Two towers also adjoin it. One of these towers houses a chapel. To the south and west of the dwelling, there are 6,500m² of tree-dotted grounds that are easy to maintain. The property was the family home of the famous French novelist Hervé Bazin. The current owner recreated the atmosphere of Bazin’s novel ‘Vipère au Poing’ here and opened the chateau to visitors. The property has been entirely adapted to comply with norms for France’s accreditation for a building to be open to the public. It now resembles a museum and can be used as a business.

Listed castle Le Lion-d'Angers (49)

Réf.4739 : Renaissance chateau listed as a Historic Monument and 83 acres for sale in Anjou In Anjou, built in the countryside on the outskirts of a small village, stands this magnificent Renaissance property. A large avenue of lime trees leads to the old carriage entrance that precedes the main courtyard. The property is located in the north of Maine-et-Loire, in a preserved rural area, away from major traffic flows and easily accessible. The village is set in a landscape of hedgerows and farmland. The neighbouring towns provide everyday amenities. Angers, 35 km away, is within easy reach, offering a direct link to Paris (A11 motorway and TGV station for Paris in 1 hour 25 minutes). The whole property offers a discreet, stable and rural setting, characteristic of the Anjou region. Angers (population 160.000) is just 15 minutes away by car. Angers is the capital of the Anjou region, with all the shops and services you need (university hospital, universities, TGV train station providing a 1h30 hour link to Paris). The town centre is magnificent, with its narrow streets, the imposing silhouette of its 13th-century castle, and the parks and gardens in the heart of the town. The town has also been awarded the title of France's top green town and is a great place to live. In other words: the gentleness of Anjou. It is one of the smallest Renaissance-style chateau in France. Built of schist and tuffeau stone and covered with slate, it faces south/north. It has a total surface area of 800 sqm spread over three levels of approximately 230 sqm each, extended by three half-floors in the east wing. The upper floors are accessed via an impressive straight stone staircase, supported by buttress walls and covered with brick vaults with white stone coffers, as well as a wooden spiral staircase. The façades feature large windows with crossbars and mullions. The chateau's roofs are very varied, illustrating the architectural richness of the building: pavilion, pepperpot and imperial. One enters the residence through a low semi-circular door with pilasters: - On the ground floor: guard room (67 sqm, ceiling height: 3.63 m), library (33 sqm), dining room (38 sqm), kitchen (36 sqm), utility room (7.6 sqm), toilet and washbasin; On the mezzanine floor: bedroom (42 sqm) and bathroom (8 sqm). - Upstairs: living room with painted wood panelling (72 sqm, ceiling height 3.51 m), 3 bedrooms (35, 28, 18 sqm), one with en-suite bathroom, another with dressing room, office (24 sqm), bathroom and shower room (11 sqm), WC and dressing room (9 sqm); On the mezzanine floor: bedroom (42 sqm), bathroom/shower room and toilet (8.5 sqm), dressing room in the tower. - On the second floor: billiard room (29 sqm), upstairs lounge (27 sqm), 7 bedrooms (from 11 to 28 sqm), 1 shower room; On the mezzanine floor: bedroom (44 sqm), bathroom/shower room and WC (8 sqm), dressing room in the tower. Attic above, vaulted cellar including the boiler room under the west wing and semi-underground cellar under the east wing. The chateau is sold furnished; the complete list is to be determined with the owner. The quality of the building's exterior architecture is exceptional. The interior lives up to this impression with architectural features characteristic of large country houses. To name but a few, there is the beautiful straight staircase with open risers, the monumental fireplaces, the mullioned and transom windows, and the consistent and skilful use of high-quality materials (terracotta, wood panelling, cut stone for the ornamentation, etc.). The two painted rooms upstairs are admirable. The paintings were created in 1648 for the wedding of a former owner of the château: The first includes classical motifs such as foliage, crowned busts of Roman emperors, but also still lifes of flowers and fruit, landscapes of Anjou, etc. The second is known as the 'chambre des Amours' (chamber of love) because of the motifs with which it is decorated. This building, on a human scale, has all the features of a large Renaissance château. Without excessive decoration or extravagance, it authentically embodies a large Anjou residence, with no lack of architectural richness. It is an extension in Haut-Anjou of the prestigious splendour of the Châteaux of the Loire. OUTBUILDINGS : They include a U-shaped courtyard comprising: - A 4-room building with 2 woodsheds and 2 chicken coops; - At right angles: a barn, a large garage (125 sqm), a 2-room caretaker's lodge (70 sqm), electric heating, in need of refurbishment; attics above; - At right angles: a dilapidated 70 sqm dwelling, then the old stables (saddle room and 6 stalls); attic above. In the grounds: - A dovecote; - A kennel; - A shelter in the woods; - A well in the courtyard. LAND : Charming English-style park planted with numerous large trees (oaks, cedars, ash trees, chestnut trees, etc.) and ornamental shrubs. Situated between the old village and the River Layon, it enjoys a location that is both central and secluded, reflecting the pivotal role it once played in the local community. Close to the business hubs of Angers and Cholet, and within easy reach of Saumur, the property offers excellent accessibility whilst retaining the charm of a preserved rural setting. The Layon Valley, renowned for its landscapes and vineyards, offers a sought-after lifestyle, ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the heritage of the Anjou region. The numerous surrounding vineyards contribute to the region’s economic and cultural vitality, whilst the paths and roads criss-crossing the hillsides invite you to go for a stroll. The property now offers an interesting heritage base, suitable for a residential or development project, in an area appreciated for its relaxed lifestyle and authenticity. All that remains of the medieval castle, dating from the 12th and 15th centuries, is an imposing square keep overlooking the valley and the ruins of its original seigneurial layout. The main tower was built on a four-storey plan with a slate roof and features spacious rooms whose opulent furnishings for the time suggest that powerful lords once resided here. Built on a promontory, the complex forms a double enclosure enclosed by defensive curtain walls with flanking towers, whose functions were to observe the valley and protect the inhabitants from external attacks. In addition to the castle, a former residence dating from the 16th-C. currently serves as the main dwelling on the estate. Built of local stone with a three-storey layout and a slate roof, it covers an area of approximately 450 sqm and is laid out as follows: On the raised ground floor, accessed via a stone stepway, a gallery leads on one side to a kitchen, a large room converted into a living/dining room featuring a monumental stone fireplace and a mezzanine accessed via a remarkable solid oak spiral staircase with a central baluster featuring a twisted design, and then to a study/library; and on the other side to a toilet, a bathroom, a dressing room, two bedrooms, a lounge with a built-in fireplace, and a shower room. On this floor, the floors are laid with Rairies terracotta tiles and solid wood parquet, the interior doors and shutters, and the ceilings feature ornate cornices or exposed beams. Partially attic space above. On the ground floor, a spacious living room used as a reception room with a monumental fireplace and an old bread oven, two en-suite bedrooms, each with its own shower room/toilet, a kitchen/utility room, storage rooms, a boiler room and a cellar. Heating is provided by a De Dietrich oil-fired boiler (2000) and a wood-burning stove, with hot water supplied by an electric water heater. Castle Angers (49)

Ref.4068 : Elegant 19th C. chateau in the Layon region, near Angers. This beautiful chateau, solidly built on the slopes of the Layon, is situated on a hill overlooking the surrounding vineyards and villages, giving it a breathtaking 360° view. The Layon Valley is characterised by landscapes of rolling green hills and narrow valleys, with terraced vineyards running down to the banks of the Layon River. Renowned for its production of sweet white wines, such as Coteaux du Layon, Bonnezeaux, Quarts de Chaume and Chaume, it is considered to be the home of one of France's flagship wines. People come from far and wide to taste its wines, explore its villages and also to enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, horse riding and water sports. Situated in the heart of the Angevin heritage and not far from the dynamic city of Angers, whose historical richness is no longer in question, this castle benefits from an ideal position both in terms of its proximity to essential shops and its easy access to the motorway axes leading to the metropolises and professional areas of Paris, Le Mans and Nantes. This majestic residence, with its rendered facades and carefully staggered tufa stone corner chains, displays a varied architectural style to great effect. Topped by high slate roofs that seem to touch the sky, and topped by a 'belvedere' with a beautifully worked zinc railing, it is built on four levels. On its north façade, the central bay is adorned with decorated pilasters that surround remarkable windows with tufa ornaments and mullions borrowed from Renaissance architecture. Flanked by a recessed wing, the castle is extended by a typically Angevin longère that surrounds the main courtyard, thus enriching the architectural variety of this complex. It is accessed from this side by a singular staircase with a double revolution staircase in front of the courtyard dwelling. On the south facade, the main building is enhanced on the left by a wing with a pretty corbelled turret on its side. The view over the surrounding countryside from this point is splendid. The castle has a living area of approx. 700sqm, arranged as follows: On the ground floor: a splendid entrance hall which gives access to the living rooms, VIP lounge, lounge, dining room, service entrance, laundry room and spacious kitchen, and to the exceptional spiral stairway topped by a ribbed ribbed dome, leading to the floors from the cellars to the attics. There are oak parquet floors with herringbone and cabochon paving, a marble fireplace and monumental granite fireplaces, picture rails and panelling of finely worked wood, ornate ceilings, some of which are splendid, such as the arched vaults on ribbed crossings with tiercerons and offset liernes. This architectural feature, very rarely seen in castles of this period, is characterised by the broken aspect of the vault line obtained by a successive shift in the keystones. On the first floor: a gallery giving access on either side to three bedrooms, one of which has an imposing wooden coffered ceiling and an adjoining balconette, a magnificently decorated chapel, a library, two rooms that could be used as offices or spare bedrooms and a bathroom. There are herringbone oak floors, marble fireplaces and wooden picture rails. Second floor: gallery with four bedrooms and a large bathroom. On the third floor: the service floor comprises former bedrooms and service rooms as well as an attic to be converted. Fourth floor: access to the viewpoint from the belvedere from the service floor. Basement: Two pleasure cellars and a magnificent brick vaulted cellar. The property has several outbuildings in good condition and close to the castle, as follows The longère (farmhouse) in a square return comprising : two garages, one of which is a large workshop/garage equipped with an automated and secure locking system; A shed/wood store; A large and pleasant attic club house; A winter garden which can be used as a reception room. The independent house of 150m² entirely restored which can be used as a gîte or guest house comprising: on the ground floor, a living room, a kitchen and back kitchen, a bathroom and a toilet and on the second floor, two bedrooms. A shed. An orangery adjoining a charming walled vegetable garden and its pond. An additional garage (possibly for 2 cars). A tennis court. A monumental heated swimming pool (6m x 25m), tiled and closed by a pretty wrought iron handrail, and its pool house chalet with shower and sauna. Beautiful romantic English-style park of 12.97 acres ( 5 ha 25a 88ca) entirely enclosed, decorated with majestic trees (oaks, plane trees, chestnut trees, cedars, redwoods, pines, ...), crossed by a moat and punctuated by a piece of water on which many species of birds like to take refuge. There are lovely features such as the bridge over the moat and the circular stabilised paths leading easily to any part of the park. Walking through this natural setting really does give you a sense of perpetual discovery, with each vantage point offering new perspectives that ostensibly invite contemplation. The journey continues from the park to the footpaths that stretch around the property, through hillsides and vineyards. Castle Angers (49)

“A quasi-royal château” - The finest and most outstanding 18th-century château in Anjou 300 hectares - Private racecourse -17th–18th century architecture - Magnificent park designed by Edouard André - Sumptuous 18th-century interior decoration featuring marble and wood paneling - Private racecourse - Listed historic monument - 300 km from Paris, Angers, Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire. Set within 300 hectares, this property of royal appearance, owned in the 19th century by descendants of the English royal family, stands as one of the most brilliant and sumptuous historic estates in western France, both for its classical 17th- and 18th-century architecture, its park designed by the great landscape architect Edouard André (notably responsible for the Monte Carlo park), and its interior decoration marked by superb 18th-century woodwork, a grand gallery, and a sumptuous marble salon; all overlooking, with a magnificent view, a rare private racecourse still in operation. The majestic private avenue, over one kilometer long and lined with century-old plane trees, winds through the park, offering superb vistas, and leads to a grand perspective revealing the most beautiful, brilliant, and elegant 18th-century château in Anjou, after passing through classical gardens of topiary, pools, and fountains. This property, described as “quasi-royal,” is clearly inspired by the Palace of Versailles: three grand approach perspectives, a U-shaped courtyard around a 17th-century building begun in 1635 and expanded in the 18th century with two lateral wings of outbuildings opening onto inner courtyards, and an east–west orientation capturing sunlight throughout the day. Beyond the gate and the ha-has, the château's elegant courtyard is overlooked by a statue of Minerva symbolizing peace. A series of French windows leads into a sumptuous 24-meter-long through gallery, adorned with monumental columns, cabochon flooring, flooded with light, and opening onto the garden through eight French windows with a magnificent axial view. On the park side, a grand and elegant double staircase leads to the first floor. At one end of the gallery, a majestic staircase with a beautiful, airy flight of stone steps and wrought-iron railing leads to the upper floor. Behind it lies a wood-paneled library with cabochon flooring, opening onto the garden at ground level. A through chapel, accessible from both inside and outside, features a superb main altar with a large carved wooden altarpiece with pilasters, Corinthian capitals, twisted columns with vine scrolls, and three paintings: The Flight into Egypt, The Adoration of the Magi, and The Visitation, along with a crucifix. Painted and armorial stained glass from the 16th century depict a knight and Saint James. At the other end of the gallery, a fine 18th-century wood-paneled salon with a marble fireplace opens onto the garden, the dining room, and the grand marble salon. The marble salon, directly inspired by the Salon of War and Salon of Peace at Versailles, occupies a neoclassical pavilion built specifically in 1780. With 6-meter ceilings and 8.4 meters beneath the dome, flooded with light from six large French windows, this 80 m² salon features sumptuous 18th-century decoration in French marble, mirrors, pilasters with Ionic capitals, medallions, a marble fireplace with gilded bronze and Italian micro-mosaics, marble mosaic flooring, and 18th-century Italian marble marquetry panels. Two terracotta overdoor panels bear inscriptions reflecting Enlightenment ideals. Beneath a monumental domed ceiling with trellis decoration and a balustraded gallery, its dual east and south exposure offers a splendid dominant view of the racecourse. It is one of the most exceptional 18th-century private interiors in France. A sumptuous neoclassical rotunda built in 1905 houses the grand dining room, adorned with superb natural oak 18th-century wood paneling. With 5.5-meter ceilings and 70 m² of space, it opens through three French windows onto the south terrace, decorated with a beautiful Italian pergola. Also on the ground floor: a smaller wood-paneled dining room, a vast theatrical staircase hall with wrought-iron railing, and a refined small salon with a marble fireplace. The spacious and bright kitchen opens onto the courtyard and retains fine original elements, complemented by three charming back kitchens and a breakfast room. Practical spaces include a boot room, laundry room, office, and guest facilities with early 20th-century character. On the main floor, the central section offers three large bedrooms richly decorated with 18th-century wood paneling, each with its own bathroom, while the south wing includes five additional bedrooms with several bathrooms, including a remarkable room decorated in Siena yellow marble. Upper levels provide numerous additional bedrooms, service areas, an independent apartment, and attics. The north wing, partly used for reception, includes a series of elegant reception rooms on the ground floor and a large through hall. The upper floors, in need of restoration, offer significant potential with many bedrooms and bathrooms enhanced by quality historic décor. The property also features extensive vaulted cellars and a swimming pool located to the south with a commanding view over the racecourse. Outbuildings: Stable courtyard to the north: stables, accommodations, former poultry houses. Service courtyard to the south: caretaker's house, office, laundry. Indoor riding arena converted into a reception hall: 250 seated, 500 standing. A splendid 18th-century orangery facing south. A walled kitchen garden. Castle Angers (49)

25 minutes from Angers, a 19th-century château, its park of nearly 7 hectares, and its numerous outbuildings. In a rural environment, the property is accessible via a departmental road. A second access exists to the southeast, via a country path. At the center of the estate, the château is surrounded by a gravel courtyard. The main façades are oriented north-south. Originally probably built in the 18th century, the residence was completely transformed during the 1870s. The main building is flanked to the east by a pavilion and to the west by a corbelled tower. The entire structure is built of rubble schist coated with lime. The frames of the openings and the moldings of the façades are made of tuffeau stone. In the center and to the north, a central projecting body is dressed in tuffeau and covered with a pavilion roof. The entrance door is topped by a large opening extended by an ornate wrought iron balcony. This is also crowned by a semi-circular pediment pierced by a central dormer window. All the tall slate roofs are topped with zinc ridge caps and red brick chimney stacks. The outbuildings are located to the east and south. No longer in use, they are all built of rubble schist dressed and coated with lime. The roofs are slate, and the window frames are red brick. The park and meadows extend to the west. This description has been automatically translated from French.

Castle Angers (49)

A remarkable listed castle with its chapel, outbuildings and 70 hectares of grounds bordering a river in Anjou . All the buildings are grouped together in the centre of the undivided estate, at the end of a driveway that extends for almost 400 m under a canopy of bicentennial plane trees. It leads to a stone bridge across the moat and on to a gatehouse with four-pitched roof, marking the entrance to the fortress. You then have to pass through a carriage gate, once protected by a portcullis and a drawbridge, or through a small pedestrian gate on one side, to discover the castle's main courtyard, where the central lawn is adorned with sixteen box topiaries. At the back, the main section of the dwelling is flanked by a wing set at right angles. On the other side stands a chapel. To the south, there is a garden of almost 1 ha, criss-crossed by paths and planted with numerous fruit trees. It also includes a fishpond, which is thought to have once been a 'longue paume' (long tennis) ground. To the north, a former farmyard is bordered by outbuildings that originally served as a defensive enclosure. It has been converted into a garden with a central fountain. The complex is surrounded by a moat filled with water. The property is traversed by numerous tracks providing access to the woods, river and meadows. In a single lot, it is bordered on one of its four sides by a navigable river. The grounds comprise parkland, orchards and moats (4 ha), alleys (2.8 ha), a pond (0.9 ha), open meadows (48 ha) undergoing reforestation - 4,500 trees were planted in 2007, woodland (11.6 ha) including oak, pine and poplar trees, and tenanted farmland (3.7 ha). The castle and its surrounding buildings, the moat, the gardens and most of the surrounding avenues are all listed. The slate roofs either have two or four pitches or are pepperpot-shaped; the walls are of rendered or pointed rubble masonry; the facade and roof openings are mostly rectilinear, some with mullions, some are arched.
