Castle Saint-Saëns (76)

An elegant chateau from the 18th and 19th centuries with six hectares of grounds, nestled beside Eawy forest in France’s Pays de Bray province, two hours from Paris. Roads through Eawy forest, then country lanes through hedge-lined meadows from the town of Saint-Saëns, lead to the village where the chateau is nestled. Beyond a calvary, a row of majestic plane trees edges the property. Then the estate comes into view. A church opposite watches over the grounds. Beside the entrance stands a building of red brick and sandstone. On the other side of the entrance, there is a characterful half-timbered house. Between these two structures, there is a sturdy wrought-iron double gate flanked by two yew hedges. It is positioned a long way from the buildings. From this gate, you can admire vistas on all sides. The chateau towers proudly in the middle of its tree-dotted grounds. The building was a hunting lodge at the end of the 18th century. Later, it was extended during the Bourbon Restoration, a period of French history that lasted from 1815 to 1830. The chateau is the successor to a seigneurial manor house that once stood here and that dated back to an unknown year. For 300 years, the dwelling belonged to the same family of landowners. The members of this family were nobles of the sword who served in the French king’s armies and later in the emperor’s armies. Some members of this family are now buried in the church that neighbours the property. During the July Monarchy, when Louis-Philippe I reigned in France, a marquis and knight built the two towers that flank the chateau and gave the dwelling its current appearance. That was when this grand house became today’s imposing edifice with a straight central section. The chateau’s architecture is neoclassical in style. It has a base course of dressed stone, walls of brickwork and stone, and rectangular windows that are evenly laid out in a symmetrical arrangement. It is crowned with a slate roof. To the south-east there is a wood store. The buildings mostly have slate roofs and walls of brick and stone. The relaxing grounds include many groves, a vegetable patch, an orchard, a pond and pastureland reserved for grazing.

Castle Uzès (30)

This 18th-century residence is ideally situated on the rolling plains of the Eure valley, just 5 minutes from the center of Uzès and the much loved Place aux Herbes. The immediate setting, a private wooded park of over one hectare (2.47 acres), offers a sense of intimacy, yet close proximity to the city. The château, the centerpiece of the complex, has played host to major events in support of France and its Allies during the Second World War. Two outbuildings complete the ensemble: an old orangery that has been completely refurbished, and an old barn used for farming. The château is divided into three levels, with several apartments. The first floor comprises a 73m2 (786 sq ft) apartment with two bedrooms, a magnificent vaulted room opening onto the inner courtyard, cellars, a toilet and storage space. The second floor comprises a two-beds, a one-bed, and two studios. A 4-bedroom apartment extends over the second floor, renovated and bright, it has its own private entrance. In the former barn, upstairs is an apartment with 83m2 (894 sq ft) of living space plus a pleasant 49m2 (527 sq ft) terrace. Below the apartment, a non-renovated room offers spacious volumes. Next door is a one-bedroom apartment. The south-east-facing former orangery, with a breathtaking view over the park, is a house in its own right with approx. 214m2 (2304 sq ft) of living space. Where orange trees once drew their strength from the sun's rays, a magnificent 50m2 (538 sq ft) living room is a space that makes you want to linger. A sumptuous row of windows and high ceilings enhanced by exposed beams lend the space a magical aura. A cosy living room with fireplace follows, then a bedroom with bathroom and toilet. On the other side, a large kitchen with a storeroom. The wooden staircase leads up to the open-plan mezzanine floor, offering new views of the living room. The second floor comprises 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 powder rooms. Other varied spaces complete the picture: 4 closed garages, 3 open garages, 1 bathroom, 1 storeroom, cellars. The total surface area of the various buildings is around 1327m2 (14,284 sq ft). The orangery, as well as a section of the castle benefit from the optic fiber for their internet connection. It is conceivable that the future purchaser will make the orangery his or her main residence, while collecting income from the rental of the other spaces, which are very attractive due to their proximity to Uzès. This unique property, which has left its mark on history, offers a plethora of possibilities. Contact : Emilie Crouzet +33 6 95 74 22 06. Castle Loches (37)

Stunning 19th Century Château, newly renovated, 30 hectare park with lake and outbuildings. Nr Loches 37. Stunning 19th Century Château, recently renovated, surrounded by woodlands and park totalling 30 hectares. Peace and Privacy assured. Outbuildings with business potential, plus hunting licence for the estate. Not far from the charming royal city of Loches, and about 70 km from the city of Tours, with airport (served by Ryanair) and TGV links. This beautiful château has been found as far back in the archives as the 17th century. The estate was first registered in 1181 and then in 1239 it appears in texts, and it was once owned by the Abbey of Baugerais. The château was officially named as it is today in the 17th century. During the 19th century, the original building was added to, and this is what can be seen today. It included a lime kiln in 1880, which fell into disrepair around 1926. The current owners purchased the château in 2005. The property was dilapidated but habitable. It had not been touched for in excess of forty years, although the gardens and parks were in good condition, similar to today. The owners purchased the château with a view to fully refurbishing the property, as well as the outbuildings, in order to establish a family business. It was initially planned to host corporate events, weddings and a music recording studio for established record labels to hire as a location for bands to stay, develop, and record music for new albums. The refurbishment has just been completed to the Château, although the plan for the outbuildings did not happen due to family health issues. The works undertaken to the Château have been elaborate, with all aspects having been rebuilt or updated. A detailed list and additional photos/information are available upon request.
