luxury houses for sale Faringdon, United Kingdom
House with terrace Faringdon (United Kingdom)
A distinguished Grade II listed Georgian house of exceptional scale and character, thoughtfully enhanced for modern living, with beautifully landscaped south-west facing gardens and a superbly converted coach house. Occupying an elevated position beside the 12th-century All Saints Church, Astley House is a notable period residence dating from circa 1720. Once the Dower House to Faringdon House and later the town’s Vicarage, it retains a refined Georgian appearance, with sash windows, dormers and deep coved eaves, alongside later architectural detailing including Roman Doric columns. The property is approached from the market square through gates opening onto a gravelled forecourt, with stone steps rising to the original front entrance. This leads into a grand reception hall, where an early 18th-century staircase forms an impressive centrepiece. The principal reception rooms are elegant and well-proportioned. A superb drawing room enjoys high ceilings, intricate cornicing, a feature fireplace and tall sash windows, creating a wonderfully light and formal space. Beyond the hall lies the dining room, ideal for entertaining, while a generous study provides an additional reception room, well suited to home working. A utility room is also located on this level, and beneath the house a substantial wine cellar is accessed from the main hall. The evolution of Astley House has been carefully considered, most notably in the exceptional conversion of the former coach house. Accessed via an additional reception room and secondary hall – with ground floor WC – this part of the house opens into an outstanding kitchen/dining space extending to almost 480 sqft. beautifully designed with bespoke hand-built cabinetry and fully integrated appliances, it forms the true heart of the home, offering both scale and practicality for everyday living and entertaining. A bright conservatory to the rear enjoys direct access to the gardens, enhancing the connection between interior and exterior living. The converted coach house further benefits from underfloor heating at both ground and first floor levels, ensuring a high degree of comfort throughout. The first floor of the main house offers four well-proportioned double bedrooms, one with en suite facilities, all presented in a style sympathetic to the age and character of the house. A family bathroom, fitted with both bath and separate shower, serves the remaining rooms. Extending into the converted coach house at first floor level, a versatile studio or gym space provides excellent flexibility, equally suited as a home office or a private sitting room serving the principal suite. Beyond lies the principal suite, comprising a generous dressing area and a luxurious en suite bathroom with freestanding bath, separate shower and twin basins. The bedroom itself is particularly impressive, with dual aspect windows and an abundance of natural light. The second floor offers further adaptable accommodation, currently arranged as a large reception area, sixth bedroom, bathroom and additional storeroom. This level lends itself well to independent living and could be configured as a self-contained annexe, with scope to create further bedroom accommodation if required, subject to the usual consents. In total, the house extends to over 6,000 sqft, offering a rare combination of historic character and modern versatility. The property has also benefited from a comprehensive overhaul of the heating system, ensuring efficiency and comfort throughout. Externally, the gardens have been significantly enhanced and landscaped. The former swimming pool has been replaced with an expansive paved terrace, creating a private south-west facing sun trap ideal for outdoor dining and entertaining. The gardens are arranged over two levels, combining lawned areas with established planting and mature borders. A substantial double garage has been constructed, complete with EV charging, providing excellent parking and storage. The building also offers clear potential for the creation of a first-floor annexe, subject to the necessary consents. House with garden and terrace Swindon (United Kingdom)
Discreetly positioned at the end of a private drive and behind electric gates, Aisling House is an impressive and beautifully presented six-bedroom detached family home, offering over 3,500 sq ft of flexible accommodation, arranged across three floors. Built in 2006 by Bower Mapson Homes, who built just four exclusive, detached homes within Oxford Gardens, the property is notable for its quality construction, generous proportions and well-designed, family-oriented layout. Aisling House enjoys a highly desirable position just off Bath Road, Old Town, Swindon, one of the area's most sought-after locations. Old Town is renowned for its boutique shops, independent cafés, and a wide selection of restaurants and thriving Town Gardens, creating a vibrant local community. Seller Insight: What is your favourite room in the house and why? Andy's favourite room is the kitchen as it's a great place to have family time and to entertain friends. We have created the kitchen we always wanted with a larder, breakfast cupboard and the island is the focal point which we all gather round throughout the day. Tina's favourite room is the conservatory. It is a beautiful space to sit and look out at the garden and birds with a cup of tea in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening with candles gently lighting the room. Who do you think will be the ideal new owner? We think the ideal new owners would suit a growing family. We particularly appreciated the security being off road and with the gates allowing children and pets to roam freely. It has the benefit of being in the middle of old town and yet being set back with plenty of parking and with very easy access to the Victorian Town Gardens which we enjoy daily. What do you love most and why about your home? Several things come to mind; the space, the fact that all of the children have their own bedrooms and bathrooms means we have never had a que at the bathroom door! and they have their own privacy even when guests come to stay as well. To be in the heart of Old Town and have as much parking as we do here, is one thing we are really going to miss! Never having to worry about parking when everyone comes home. Being so close to the Town Gardens we go to the Town Gardens sometimes twice a day! Throughout the year there is so much going on there and the Blossom Trees are to die for ! What do you love about the local community? Our neighbours are just lovely and popping to Town Gardens where you'll know everyone (and everyone knows Obi!) and you get to know the regulars whether you're walking the dog or you're popping for a bacon roll! We have built up a network of friends where the children have all grown up together. Wood Street is fab! Lots of independent restaurants, bars and street parties which are so much fun! How easy is it to commute from here? I used to commute to both Newbury and London on a daily basis which is so easy either on the motorway or mainline station which is walking distance/short cycle from the front door. Our children commute to Reading and Oxford which is also a really easy commute. We are very centralised here in Old Town. What made you choose this property over others? This is a good question! When we moved here we were a multigenerational family and needed a home that would accommodate us all without feeling that we were all on top of eachother. As soon as we approached the house and came through the front gates we just saw all the autumn leaves on the trees and the house was almost perfectly framed by the tree nextdoor we were sold there and then! Ground Floor: A spacious entrance hall welcomes you into the home, with newly laid herringbone flooring which flows seamlessly throughout a majority of the ground floor. At the heart of the home is the newly refitted kitchen by John Lewis of Hungerford, complete with a built-in larder and breakfast cupboards, alongside high-end integrated appliances. Adjacent to the kitchen, there is a useful utility room housing the white goods and additional storage. At the rear of the house, the formal dining room connects through to the garden room and the main living room. Completing the ground floor is the separate snug, office, and guest cloakroom. First Floor: Upstairs, the landing gives access to four generous guest bedrooms, three of which are en-suite, and the family bathroom which services the fourth guest bedroom. Second Floor: The top floor is currently dedicated to the master suite with bedroom 6 currently being used as a dressing room. There is a spacious en-suite shower room and ample room for additional fitted storage if the additional guest bedroom is required. Outside: Aisling House benefits from a private, low-maintenance garden to the rear, with an extended patio area providing the perfect space for al fresco dining and summer gatherings. To the front, the large, gravelled driveway allows parking for several vehicles with a newly fitted 7KW electric car charging point. Garage & Studio: There is a detached double garage with an electric door, which has been partly converted to provide a versatile space perfect for a home office, studio or a gym. Location: The historic Old Town is the older part of Swindon which is popular for its eclectic mix of independent bars, boutique shops, bakeries and restaurants amongst the practical amenities that are always handy to have on the doorstep. In addition to this, there are many walks to be enjoyed around a selection of public gardens and open countryside heading out to one of Swindon's old canal routes. Just down the road from the property, residents can enjoy a calendar full of events and festivals held at the beautiful Old Town Gardens. The town is a short walk down the hill, where the train station, with trains running to London Paddington, can be utilised to access the capital in under an hour. The M4 motorway is also within approximately 3 miles of the property to either junction 15 or 16. There are four primary schools and a secondary in Old Town, all with good Ofsted ratings, with a further range of super independent prep and secondary schools available within a 20-mile catchment including Pinewood, Cricklade Manor Prep, St Margarets Prep and St Marys of Calne and Marlborough College. Contemporary house with garden and terrace Witney (United Kingdom)
Open House - Saturday 12th September 11:00am - 1:00pm - Please register in advance by calling 01865 953244 or email [email protected] A beautifully presented 17th-century Cotswold stone house, combining the character and atmosphere of a Grade II listed village home with an impressive contemporary extension and recently renewed thatch. Set along a quiet no-through lane in the sought-after west Oxfordshire village of Standlake, Lancotta offers four double bedrooms, generous living space and a delightful west-facing garden, with Oxford within easy reach and fast direct rail services from Didcot Parkway to London Paddington. There are houses that have been modernised, and houses where old and new genuinely work together. Lancotta very much belongs in the latter category. Dating from the 17th century, the original house has all the character one would hope to find in a period Oxfordshire home, with Cotswold stone elevations beneath a thatched roof, exposed timbers, fireplaces and wonderfully individual rooms. Yet the house has evolved particularly well for modern family life, most notably through the addition of an impressive kitchen and dining space opening directly onto the garden. This is very much the heart of the house. Generous, light-filled and distinctly contemporary in feel, it provides an excellent contrast to the more intimate rooms of the original building and creates the sort of everyday living and entertaining space that can sometimes be difficult to find in a house of this age. Doors lead directly outside, creating an easy connection with the garden during the warmer months. Elsewhere on the ground floor are two characterful reception rooms, providing flexible spaces for family life, entertaining and working from home, together with the practical accommodation required for day-to-day living. Upstairs are four double bedrooms. The principal bedroom is particularly appealing and has the unusual addition of its own private balcony overlooking the garden; a wonderful spot from which to enjoy the afternoon and evening sun. The remaining bedrooms retain much of the individuality and charm one would expect from a house with more than three centuries of history. Outside, the established garden is private and west-facing, providing excellent afternoon and evening light. The setting is another important part of Lancotta's appeal. Despite being within the village, the house occupies a peaceful position along a no-through lane, giving it a pleasantly tucked-away feel without being isolated. Importantly for a thatched property, the thatch was renewed in May 2025, representing significant recent investment in one of the house's most distinctive features. COUNTRY LIVING WITH EXCELLENT CONNECTIONS Standlake is a thriving west Oxfordshire village surrounded by attractive countryside and close to the River Windrush, with a primary school, village shop, pub, church and an active local community. Witney is approximately five miles away and provides a comprehensive range of shops, restaurants and everyday amenities, while Oxford is also readily accessible. For those needing regular access to the capital, Didcot Parkway provides frequent direct services to London Paddington, with the fastest journeys taking approximately 36 minutes. This makes Lancotta an especially attractive proposition for buyers seeking considerably more space, character and countryside while retaining convenient access to London, with central London accessible within around an hour of leaving the property. It is this combination that makes the property particularly compelling: a genuine 17th-century Oxfordshire village house, full of period character yet successfully adapted for modern life, surrounded by countryside and with both Oxford and London within easy reach. House with garden and terrace Newbury (United Kingdom)
Malt Cottage is a large 4 bed, 2 bath, 3 reception, Grade II listed 18th century property with a wealth of character and original features. It sits in 0.7 acres, in a quiet hamlet to the north of Newbury, surrounded by nature and countryside walks. “The best thing about living here? There are two things for me. First, it’s the peace and tranquillity. I used to travel a lot. When I’d come back I’d open up the kitchen doors and listen. I couldn't hear anything. No noise. No traffic. Just an immediate calm that you can reach out and touch. The second thing is you can get almost anywhere you want to get to in southern England, because we are so close to the M4 the A34 we're halfway between Oxford and Southampton, halfway between Bath and London. Didcot station, 38 minutes into the middle of London. 45 minutes to Heathrow T5. Brilliant. The accessibility is a huge benefit.” Location Hill Green is a beautiful unspoilt rural location between the villages of Leckhampstead and Peasemore, to the north of Newbury. The popular pub, The Fox at Peasemore, is a walk away, while the main arteries of the M4 and A34 are a short drive away. Property A distinctive topiary ‘crinkle crankle’ hedge lets you know you’ve arrived at Malt Cottage. Through the metal five-bar gate, a long, gravelled drive leads you via a characterful garden to the attractive, symmetrical red and grey brick cottage with roses around the door. The long front lawn, edged with mature hedges and wooden fencing, is dotted with beds tumbling with flowers and rich planting. Full of interest, this garden contains numerous spots to sit out and observe the visiting wildlife, with quiet nooks to unwind and relax, alfresco dining spots, sheds, a summer house, fruit cages and big, big views. Believed to date back to about 1780, nods to the cottage’s past begin with the historic insurance plaque set into a recess above the wide front door and the millstone by the doorstep. “The millstone on the doorstep is one half of two circular grinding stones that came from a windmill that was located about 400 yards away, on a property known as Windmill Place.” This is a welcoming country home, from the interest-filled garden through the characterful rooms and out to the epic views beyond. “When you choose to live in an old cottage, you’re buying into a house that has its quirks, but you're also buying into beautiful architecture, which will never be built again. Very few of the walls are smooth and plastered, they're all original with their scrapes and gouges and score marks, and they all speak to the original history and function of the building. That's one of the things that I love about the house, it's incredibly honest in its look and feel.” Hallway Through the wide front door, you enter the bright reception hall with a tall alcove and doorways leading to the sitting room and dining room. Sitting room Bright, spacious and wonderfully welcoming, the sitting room blends soft whites with the warm tones of the wide brick inglenook fireplace – note the bread oven recess to the right. The woodburning stove adds an attractive focal point in summer and instant ambience and warmth on cooler winter nights. “I love this room. I just love the colours. All the colours and decoration are entirely my wife's fault, she's responsible for that, which I really like.” This generously proportioned room has ample space for a three- or four-piece suite, with accompanying ottomans, coffee tables, cabinets and more. Overhead, the large central beam is met by smaller cross beams, all of which are painted to blend in with the walls and maintain the light, airy feel. “We heard anecdotally that it was originally a maltster's house. There are some architectural hints towards the house’s original purpose. If you look at the dimensions of the main beam in the sitting room, it’s hugely over-specced for a residential building. This would be because the barley was malted on the first floor, hence there would have been extreme weight on that floor.” A trio of built-in cupboards sit to the right of the fireplace, a hint of a time when this may have been an entrance to a staircase. Around the room, a trio of whitewashed original ledge-and-brace doors lead into the front hallway, snug/cinema room and the rear hallway. Rear hallway With access from the sitting room and via a half-glazed farmhouse door to the garden, this hallway leads to the office, shower room and upstairs to three of the first-floor bedrooms. Cinema room / snug Down a couple of stairs from the sitting room is the cosy snug, used as a cinema room by the current owners. “There's really clever lighting system in the room. You can dim the lights, just like they do at the cinema. With the big screen and all the speakers, you can just immerse yourself. When the Bond films come out, we buy them on the 4k DVDs. We go in there, close the door, put the movie on, and we are transported to another world, nothing else exists outside of that room.” During the day this is a bright, characterful room, thanks to the windows on two aspects and the half-glazed stable door that leads out to the rear garden. Smaller than the sitting room, the proportions are ample for a couple of sofas and armchairs, book cases or cabinets and a media centre. The fireplace, while currently blocked off, contains a flue and has been vented, so a wood burner could be introduced if desired. “We installed three flues when we moved in. The cinema room has a chimney and a fireplace, which we blocked off but left vented. If somebody wanted to change that to a snug, they could put a wood burner in. The bedroom above, which is connected to the principal bedroom, also has a fireplace which we've just blocked it off. But it's vented, so if somebody wanted to open that up, they could. There’s scope for at least two more wood burners or open fireplaces at that end of the cottage.” Dining room Turn left from the front hallway and you enter the dining room, the mirror reception room to the sitting room. This well-proportioned room makes a relaxed yet, when occasions call for it, formal entertaining space – ideal for dinner parties and long lazy breakfasts alike. “If it's a sit-down dinner, or if it's going to be a bit of a long, lazy sort of Saturday or Sunday lunch, we settle into the dining room directly next door to the kitchen. The fireplace contains a working open fire. “When you've got friends around for dinner, say on a late autumn or winter evening, you can have the fireplace lit, you can have the wood burner on in the lounge, and if they're staying over, you can put the wood burner on in the upstairs bedroom.” With the dining space in the kitchen, this could also be used a family room, play room or whatever your family and lifestyle needs. A few steps take you down into the kitchen or through another door to the second hallway beyond, with the cloakroom and stairs up to bedroom three. Hallway This compact hallway has hanging space for outdoor coats and shoes, and provides access to the cloakroom and stairs up to the third bedroom. Cloakroom With a close-coupled WC, wall-mounted hand basin, single radiator and window. Kitchen / breakfast room Down four steps from the dining room is the long, dual-aspect kitchen/breakfast room – the hub of this family home. The calm, muted colour scheme effortlessly melds old and new. The hand-crafted bespoke country kitchen is by John Lewis of Hungerford. “The kitchen is by John Lewis of Hungerford. We're really happy with the way it turned out. The chap who fitted our Aga even asked if he could use a photo of our kitchen on his marketing, which he did for several years.” The cream and black Aga sits between polished black granite worktops and upstands, along from the 800mm wide ceramic hob and single oven. Opposite, beyond the highly practical movable central island, is a wide American-style fridge-freezer, eye-level built-in Miele coffee machine and tall storage space. “We tend to gravitate to the kitchen when friends come over – the freestanding island table is just great to stick an ice bucket on and a bottle of fizz or wine and several plates of food – we're great fans of picky suppers.” Beneath a window that looks out onto the front drive is the Belfast sink. Alongside is an integrated dishwasher, a washing machine, tumble dryer and eye-level microwave. This John Lewis of Hungerford kitchen has been thoughtfully designed and subtly contains a wealth of storage. There’s also a built-in pantry as you enter, with yet more storage for mops and ironing boards behind the full-height pantry doors that conceal the Mega-Flo mains pressure water tank. To the end of the kitchen, a dining area captures the view from the French doors out across the patio beyond and across the acres of countryside immediately beyond the rear garden. “There's a lovely seating area off the kitchen where I like to have my morning coffee in the summer. You can see quite a long way from the patio. About 15 miles. It sounds crazy, but you can just about see Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) you've got a huge view south. Study Perfectly sized to be a neat home office, study, library or den. With a period ledge-and-brace door and window onto the rear garden and the farmland beyond. Shower room This elegant Edwardian-inspired shower room has beautiful black and white tiled flooring and white metro tiles topped with a smart black border, which becomes a useful shelf behind the wide pedestal hand basin and close coupled loo. Above the basin is a stylish brushed metal mirror and wall light fittings. On the facing wall, with full height tiles, is the shower enclosure with wall-mounted thermostatic shower controls. The overhead beams are painted white to increase the feeling of space and light. A modern radiator sits beside a period towel rail. UPSTAIRS The four bedrooms are reached via two separate staircases. The principal, second and fourth bedrooms use the main central staircase off the back of the sitting room, while the third bedroom is reached via stairs off the dining room. From the main staircase; Walk in wardrobe At the top of the stairs is a generous walk-in wardrobe, fitted with multiple rails and providing plenty of extra hanging and storage space. While currently used as a wardrobe, this is large enough to be repurposed as a single bedroom or additional home office. “With a dormer it could easily be a single bedroom, and the view from the bathroom window is lovely, so you would have a similar view from that room.” Principal bedroom The high vaulted ceiling and exposed beams, in their natural state not painted tar black, really set this room apart. “Upstairs in the bedrooms, you've got eaves height of about four metres, which always surprises people.” The feeling of light and space create an immediate feeling of calm as you enter. The views from the west-facing window are of the long front garden. A built-in cupboard provides handy storage, and there’s plenty of wall space for additional chests of drawers and a dressing table, along with a boudoir chair or chaise longue. A small flight of stairs takes you down to the fourth bedroom. Bedroom four / dressing room / ensuite Off the principal bedroom, down a short flight of stairs, is a lovely light bright bedroom. The original fireplace, below an oak mantle, retains the brick hearth and while currently blocked off, does have a flue, so a wood-burning stove could be introduced if desired. The views from the dormer window extend across the rear garden and then go on for miles across the acres of arable farmland beyond. This would make a wonderful nursery or child’s bedroom, a fabulous dressing room or, with the help of a plumber, a large sanctuary-like ensuite bathroom. Bedroom two Another generously proportioned double bedroom. Period features include a fireplace with working wood-burning stove, an incredible high ceiling with exposed beams, whitewashed wooden floorboards, a built-in cupboard and the original latched wood door. The view from the window is over the front garden. Bedroom three Accessed from the staircase off the dining room, this is a large, light bright double bedroom. The east-facing dormer window fills the room with natural light and gives incredible views across acres of open countryside behind the house. This room has ample space to accommodate free-standing wardrobes, chests of drawers, a desk, sofa, armchair or whatever you’d like in a large bedroom. This would make a wonderful bed-sitting room for an older child or a comfortable guest room. Family shower room With a wonderful feeling of space, the spacious family bathroom has no need for opaqued glass in the window – you’re not overlooked by anyone and can instead enjoy the wide-open views across the fields. Family bathroom There’s a ball and claw double ended roll-top-bath, pedestal handbasin beneath the window and a close-coupled WC. Lighting is from the window, the recessed ceiling lights and a delicate crystal chandelier. Outside The house is set well back from the road behind a fence and mature hedge. Most of the garden is to the front of the house, which is well-screened from the road and very private. The front garden has been transformed over the years and as well as the lawns, flower beds, mature trees, shrubs and fruit cage – currently providing plentiful soft fruits and which could also be used to grow vegetables. “It was a very functional, utilitarian garden. Over the years I've had some fun planting the box parterre, putting deck in, putting some lawn where the veg patch was. There was no overall cohesive design or plan in mind. It just evolved over time. It's just a bit sort of relaxed, really. The garden now contains various ‘rooms’, which include dining areas, sitting areas and a wooden deck with a barbeque – perfect for entertaining, a bench towards the summer house, a gravelled sitting area in front of the house, as well as a summer house and sheds for storage. “There's seating in all sorts of places, whatever grabs your mood, mind, wherever you fancy sitting, depending upon the time of year, time of day, season, temperature, there's usually a spot to just sit down, either with a cup of tea, a piece of cake, or a gin and tonic. “The seating just to the right of the front door gets the evening summer sun till about 7:30-8.00pm and because the house absorbs the heat from the sun, it stays nice and temperate. It's a lovely place to be.” To the rear of the house, leading off the kitchen diner, is an attractive patio, folly and incredible unbroken views that extend for miles. “The patio is a lovely place to sit, very quiet. The sun comes up and shines onto it in the morning, so you've just got a very calm, relaxed, quiet place to sit with a lovely view. There's a 44-acre field that surrounds the cottage, which usually has arable crops in, so it’s perfect for just easing your way into the morning.” For nature lovers, this is a gem of a property. Visitors include garden birds, red leg partridge, green, lesser and greater spotted woodpeckers, muntjac deer and more. “There are deer in the field at the back. The herd can be anything from one to 200 deer, it's quite incredible. We also regularly get a couple of cock pheasants with their little brood of ladies, so seven or eight of those. It's lovely.” The current owners are in the process of purchasing an additional 0.3 of an acre from the neighbouring farmer to the rear of the property, which is included within the 0.7 acre already stated. The aerial photograph shows an approximation of the plot, with the additional land identified with a red outline. Parking The house has a long drive with plenty of space to park at least six cars. Plans have been drawn up for a garage to the top of the drive, should the new owner wish to undertake this. Situation Hill Green is situated between the villages of Peasemore and Leckhampstead. It can be reached from the A34 and B4494. There’s a well-stocked village store and post office about two and a half miles away in Chieveley. For those who like country walks, you’re spoilt for choice. “There are some absolutely incredible walks, which we do regularly. There’s a walk we do that takes you past a natural spring that rises just before you climb up the hill to then walk to the pub, so that's incredible because there's a series of lakes that are absolutely gin clear, with resident ducks and moorhens. You've got the Ridgeway just a few miles away, and if you want to go to Coombe Gibbet, you can see that almost but not quite from the back of the house.” For the pub-goer you have The Fox at Peasemore a short walk down the road, and beyond this there’s the Ibex Inn at Chaddleworth, and further still the gastronomic Crab & Boar, The Coach, Ye Olde Red Lion and The Bunk Inn. For more Michelin-inspired dining, you have The Woodspeen, The Vineyard, Goat on the Roof and Malverleys, which are all within a short drive. For culture, you have the iconic and award-winning Watermill Theatre (also a dining location), Arlington Arts, the Corn Exchange and the Living Rainforest. There are several golf courses in and around Newbury, including Donnington & Co hotel, spa and golf club, Deanwood Park Golf Club, Donnington Grove Golf Club and Newbury & Crookham Golf Club. Transport links By car The junction with the M4 and A34 is just a few minutes’ drive away, connecting you to most of the country. From these, you can access London in the east, Bristol and Cornwall in the west, head north to Birmingham or south to the coast. Both Newbury and Red Shute Hill are incredibly well-connected. This is the first time Malt Cottage has been available on the open market since about 1938 or 39. The previous owner, Ms Haig of the famous Haig family of distillers, taught painting at Brockhurst and at Elstree schools. While the house is Grade II listed, the present owners have made improvements, including the building of a two-story extension, and believe that further appropriate improvements would be met with the same positive approach by the relevant authorising bodies. It now reads as a confident and cohesive home, where period character is balanced with thoughtful, modern design. The ground floor is arranged with both entertaining and day-to-day living in mind. House with garden and terrace Newbury (United Kingdom)
A rare chance to live in your own wing of a period country house. Covering 3,000 sq ft and encompassing 3 storeys, a stunning 28’ panelled drawing room, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen/conservatory and private gardens designed by a Chelsea medallist, this is modern living in timeless elegance. Situation On the outskirts of Newbury, just off the A34, is a private drive leading to Deanwood House. Next door is Deanwood Park Golf Course, a few moments further along the road is the acclaimed 5-star Vineyard Hotel, Spa and Restaurant currently being refurbished but reopening later this year. Property Deanwood House dates back to the early 1900s, making it a late Victorian/early Edwardian house rich in period features. Unlike other grand properties that are often divided into apartments, 8 Deanwood House occupies an entire wing and three floors of this country house, ensuring it always feels like a house. This is a substantial 3,000 sq ft home, with a third-of-an-acre garden designed by a Chelsea medal winner. “It’s one big house that was divided into eight dwellings c. 1978. We shut our front doors and it’s just like living anywhere else. There is nothing communal here, apart from the car park.” You reach the house via a long curving driveway. Once parked, you approach the front door through the courtyard. “It's like being in a mews, having neighbours close by. It's very safe if you travel a lot, as we do. You can shut your door and not have to worry about security. Hallway From the moment you enter, you’re unmistakably in a grand house with high ceilings and period features in abundance. The charming entrance lobby sets the tone with a decorative black and white tiled floor, ornate fireplace, panelled walls, mouldings and cornicing, and an impressive near double-height moulded ceiling. From here you have access to the drawing room, the kitchen/conservatory, downstairs cloakroom and stairs to the upper floors. Kitchen The kitchen is a stylish juxtaposition of period features and contemporary living. Thoughtfully updated, it combines the age-warmed tones of the original wooden cupboards and fireplace along one wall with the cool marble island and work surfaces and bespoke painted cabinetry along the other. The vast central island has a marble waterfall worktop, creating a spacious breakfast bar for four. Within the island there’s a recessed double bowl sink with fluted draining grooves on both sides, the oven and microwave are below, with integrated warming drawer, and dishwasher. Behind the integrated, induction hob is an extractor fan. Upstands are marble. Below the hob are deep pan drawers. The hob area is bookended by a pantry to the left and an American-style double fridge freezer and a tall pull out larder cupboard to the right. Storage is plentiful, within the original wooden cabinets surrounding the fireplace and, across the kitchen, in the bespoke painted units. Bevelled-edge mirrors subtly unite new and old, maximising light and adding interest. Lighting is from a trio of stylish cluster chandeliers that accentuate the ceiling height. CONSERVATORY The striking oak-framed conservatory is a seamless extension to the kitchen, and one of the most used and loved rooms in this incredible home. It leads on to a terrace with steps down to the garden, this is the perfect spot for your morning coffee, for enjoying a casual lunch or special supper, and for a relaxing sundowner at the end of the day. “Sitting in the kitchen and the conservatory, I can't see another house. All I see is my garden and then the golf course, and trees, and trees, and trees, and trees.” Natural limestone flooring blends with the terrace beyond. The high vaulted glass ceiling fills the room with natural light, complemented by the cluster chandelier for when the sun fades, and tall radiator for when the days become cooler. As in the hallway, this room also has underfloor heating. “We like to have our morning coffee out on the terrace from the kitchen, which gets the sun safe from May to October.” Drawing room Formerly the billiards room of the original house, this striking room with its wooden floor is simultaneously grand and welcoming. The painted wooden panelling draws your eye up to the high ceiling. A gloriously wide arch frames the full-height bay window, creating the ideal setting for a dining table. “The house is ideal for entertaining. The kitchen is big, as is the drawing room – we've easily had 20 for dinner in there.” The fireplace alcove, with its low curved ceiling, creates a cosy area around the huge fireplace. Above, the ornate mantle panelling is inset with bevel-edged mirrors for added light and interest. “While the drawing room is enormous, it's lovely in the wintertime with the fire going – it’s when we use it most.” A high-level leaded glass window adds interest and light. There’s even a ‘hidden’ door in the panelling, now a small cupboard. The neutral colour scheme and curtains allow you to add pops of colour and feature pieces of furniture with ease. This is a delightful room from morning to evening. Cloakroom Tucked away behind wooden double doors, is the cloakroom, making clever use of the under-stairs space. This rather glamorous WC, with its Fornassetti wallpaper, is proof that no room is too small for some designer flair. UPSTAIRS – FIRST FLOOR A generous first-floor landing continues the feeling of calm and space, and provides plenty of space for a quiet reading nook or home office. From here you have access to the principal and second bedrooms, with stairs taking you up to the next floor. Principal bedroom Entered via the dressing room, this spacious and elegant bedroom suite has a deeply private feel. The vast bedroom has the same wide bay window as the drawing room below, giving wide views of the garden and golf course beyond. An ornamental Victorian fireplace with over-mantel mirror adds a feature to one end of the room, and would make a lovely backdrop to a chaise longue or boudoir chair. The pretty wallpaper is a Thibault Toile De Jouy. This room is spacious enough for a super-king-sized bed with all the accompanying boudoir furniture you could wish for. Or as little – it’s a wonderfully serene space. In addition to the high ceiling and feature fireplace, you have a picture rail, ornate ceiling rose, wood panelling and decorative coving. Dressing room This is a super spacious dressing room. To the right, reclaimed period part-glazed doors front four wide double wardrobes. To the left, bespoke built-in wardrobes line the wall, set back beneath the wide arch. In the centre are multiple chests of drawers, two of which have padded tops to create ottoman seating. There is plumbing for a washing machine in one of the cupboards with shelving above. Ensuite This leads off from the dressing room and has plenty of natural light A large vanity unit with basin and drawers beneath sits beneath a window, providing plenty of storage. Fixtures and fittings are in an attractive brushed soft gold finish. The bath has a shower over, with thermostatic controls, a handset shower and fixed showerhead. In keeping with the rest of this elegant period home, there’s a picture rail above the painted and tiled walls. Bedroom two Currently used as a TV/sitting room, this would need few changes to become a lovely large double bedroom. The wide window overlooks the picturesque garden and golf course beyond. Period features include a fabulous wide fireplace with decorative surround, a high ceiling with ornate cornicing and ceiling rose, a picture rail and original wood panelled doors – one of which leads to a spacious airing cupboard with shelving and hot water cylinder. A wall of custom-built bookcases and cupboards provides plenty of additional storage. Just outside the room is another closet behind decorative panelled double doors. SECOND FLOOR At the top of the stairs, you have two more bedrooms and a shower room. Bedroom 3 This super-spacious room could be put to all sorts of uses. “Upstairs, my husband has a huge room for his office, but it could also be an upstairs television room, or if someone has children, it would be a wonderful bedroom playroom.” It would make the perfect bedroom with sitting area and kitchenette (which could easily be expanded) making it a teenager’s dream semi-independent living space. It could also provide comfortable living for an au pair or live-in carer or housekeeper. Or it could become a self-sufficient home office, gym or workshop. The options are almost endless. The beams add character, the window and Velux fill the space with natural light, and the T-shape floor plan gives scope for zoning. Bedroom 4 The smallest of the bedrooms, this is still a comfortable double. The window has far-reaching views of the garden and golf course beyond. Shower room Almost fully marble tiled, this elegant shower room has been cleverly designed to make the most of the available space. The large shower enclosure has thermostatic controls, a large rainfall and a hand-held shower head, and a handy recessed shelf. Opposite is a smart vanity unit with hand basin, and underneath drawers, above which is a shelf and mirrored cabinet. The loo is back-to-wall. Lighting is a mix of natural light from the Velux window, and recessed ceiling lights. There is also A wide chromed heated ladder-style towel rail. Outside The approach is down a private driveway, setting the house back from the road. “It's very safe for children and animals. There is a road, but it's so far away, they never go there.” The garden is another outstanding feature of this house, and was designed by Jo Alderson Phillips, a Chelsea medal winner. There is an original antique Italian triple bowl fountain which could be available by separate negotiation. “The gardenis just wonderful, I spend as much time as I can out in there. They’re one of the things that first attracted us to the house, and which I’ll miss the most.” Extending to roughly a third of an acre, the garden includes formal lawns and box edged parterres with lavender and David Austin roses, flowering cherry trees, and a range of seating and relaxing spaces. “We get a lot of wildlife. We have a wonderful selection of birds. We have deer. “ “Sitting in the kitchen and the conservatory, I can't see another house. All I see is my garden and then the golf course, and trees, and trees, and trees, and trees. I love spending time here.” A separate outdoor dining area is located close to the summer house. Mature hornbeam hedging screens a couple of sheds, ensuring practicalities like lawn mowers and bicycles don’t detract from the design of the garden. “The sun rises to the right of the back of the house. We get the early morning sun on the terrace and the garden is in the sun all day long.” In addition to the private garden, you have a plot in the kitchen garden, with plenty of room to grow your own fruit and vegetables, along with a selection of fruit trees. “For somebody who's keen on gardening, the kitchen gardens are a huge bonus. You can basically do what you like, and if you don't want to use it, then you just tell the management company, and they will put it to grass and take over the grass cutting. I planted a quince tree, and we have lots of apple trees.” Parking The house comes with two allocated parking spaces and additional guest parking. Situation Newbury town centre is just two miles away. In the area, you have plenty of scope to satisfy most interests. For dining out, excellent Michelin-listed options include the Vineyard – just a short stroll away and The Woodspeen. House Hungerford (United Kingdom)
Set in more than 23 acres of parkland, woodland, lakes and landscaped gardens, Forbury House is a Grade II-listed estate that has been carefully and diligently rebuilt from the inside out without losing the bones of the original house. The main residence and its ancillary buildings run to over 16,400 sq ft, providing enough space for a serious family compound, with the leisure facilities and privacy to match. London is just over an hour away. A tree-lined drive delivers you to a classically proportioned façade that gives away only a fraction of what’s inside. The reception hall runs almost 38 ft, its plasterwork and open fireplace under a soaring ceiling doing most of the talking before you’ve even reached the drawing room. From there, the principal rooms unfold with the kind of proportions that work as well for hosting as they do for family life. The dual-aspect drawing room looks out over the gardens; the dining room is built for larger gatherings; and the orangery, lit through a glazed lantern roof, opens straight onto the terrace. A cinema room, a study and a gym with full-height glazing and its own outdoor access complete the ground floor. The kitchen, arguably the centre of the house, is built around a substantial island and bespoke cabinetry, with twin butler sinks, an Aga and integrated appliances doing the heavy lifting; next door is a beautiful orangery with views out to the garden. Utility and boot rooms keep the mess of daily life at a discreet distance from the rooms designed for entertaining. Upstairs, a galleried landing lit by a vaulted skylight sets the tone. The principal suite has a wing to itself, with two dressing rooms and an ensuite bathroom; six further bedrooms, five with their own ensuites, accommodate family and guests, alongside a shower room and dedicated laundry. The ancillary accommodation includes a self-contained annexe attached to the main house, a Coach House split into two separate dwellings, and a detached Lodge with three further bedrooms. Between them, there is flexibility enough for staff, extended family or a house full of guests. Outside, the grounds match the house for ambition. Formal gardens give way to lawns, mature woodland and a lake, linked by paths that wind through the different parts of the estate. A walled garden holds a heated outdoor pool and a pool house with its own kitchen and shower facilities; a working kitchen garden contains raised beds and a greenhouse. Beyond that lie open meadows, paddocks and a hard tennis court. For all its seclusion, Forbury House sits just outside Kintbury, a village with a strong sense of community, everyday shops and a mainline station that gets you to Paddington in around an hour. Hungerford and Newbury are close by for a wider selection of restaurants and shops, and the surrounding North Wessex Downs are well known for their walking, riding and cycling.

House with garden and terrace Thatcham (United Kingdom)
The Way House is a handsome, detached 1930s family home with 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 4 reception rooms, two-thirds of an acre of mature garden backing onto Downe House School’s woodland. Between Cold Ash and Curridge, 5 mins from the M4, with excellent private schools close by. Location Red Shute Hill is an old road that runs between Curridge and Cold Ash, on the outskirts of Newbury in West Berkshire. Property Set back from the road behind a fence and mature hedge, The Way House feels wonderfully private and secluded without being out on its own. The large block-paved drive comfortably accommodates six or more cars. The Way House was built toward the end of the 1920s for the first owner, Robin Milford, a respected composer and at the time, the music teacher at Downe House School. Milford studied under Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music and was a close friend of Gerald Finzi. Whilst clearly a large house at nearly 4,000 square feet, it doesn’t feel cavernous inside, instead feeling nicely homely. “It’s such a nice quality, solid, airy house. That's exactly what we like about it. We bought it for the bones, then we did up the inside. “In the bathrooms upstairs, there’s a solid marble floor and walls, everything in there is solid. This is a welcoming country home, from the storm porch that shelters you, visitors and packages from the elements, through to the end of the long garden with its gate into the woodland beyond. Hallway The warm welcome begins at the front door. Inside the generous hallway, the neutral bright white walls are contrasted with a wealth of warm oak, most notably the beautifully finished bespoke staircase with barley twist newel posts and spindles. Deep oak ogee skirting boards and solid oak flooring run from hallway to sitting room. “We had the stairs made. And all the flooring is solid oak. It's not engineered oak, it’s solid oak.” Natural materials run throughout the house, with granite, slate, marble and travertine, with original old stone and red brick making appearances. Sitting room with formal dining area and garden room The generous proportions of this room mean it can easily be divided into two areas. The current owners have chosen a formal dining area with a table that can comfortably seat eight, accompanied by a baby grand piano to the front, with a classic sofa suite providing comfortable seating around the fire to the rear. The original wide stone fireplace gives the room a period focal point. Currently fitted with a gas stove for instant warmth and atmosphere, it could easily be returned to a solid fuel grate if desired. The room is kept light and bright during the day thanks to the windows on three walls. Metal Crittall-style French doors open into the garden room, which in turn has sliding French doors onto the expansive south-facing garden. “This is where we sit and drink our coffee in the winter.” This is also the perfect spot to sit back and watch the visiting birds and wildlife. “We get lots of visitors in the garden. We put up deer-proof fencing to stop the deer jumping in and eating things. We get rabbits, squirrels, voles and all sorts of birds – garden birds, song birds, birds of prey, red kites... We woke up one morning, and there was a little barn owl, obviously very tired, just sitting outside on the air conditioning unit. It was there all day.” Kitchen/breakfast room The kitchen/breakfast room is the sociable heart of this family home. An inky blue 2-oven 2-plate Aga is the magic ingredient when it comes to autumnal stews and winter roasts, while the eye-level double oven (one with integrated microwave) and 5-ring halogen hob offer convenience for warmer months. Natural materials abound in this highly practical kitchen. These include the slate flooring, solid oak shaker-style cabinetry, granite counters and splashbacks and deep ceramic Belfast sink, with red brick accents in the chimneybreast. A wealth of cupboards and wall units provide plenty of storage, with the breakfast bar having storage on both sides as well as the end. The expanse of work surfaces ensures you’ve more than enough counter space for whatever culinary delights you’re creating. Hidden amongst the cupboards is the integrated dishwasher. Beyond the kitchen is the large breakfast area, perfectly sized to host a long refectory table with additional space for a sofa or large dog crate. French doors lead out into the long, south-facing garden with internal doors to the right leading into the family room. Family room This generously proportioned room means everyone can decamp to their favourite spot on a selection of sofas and armchairs, making the most of a widescreen TV, media centre, book cases or whatever you choose to furnish it with. Windows on three walls and borrowed light from the kitchen/breakfast room fill the space with natural light. In the evening, the gas fire creates instant warmth and ambience. French doors lead out onto the patio and into the garden, making this a lovely space for big family get-togethers, social gatherings and all-year-round living. Utility An unusual C-shaped room, this could easily be used as a boot room, laundry room, utility room and storage space. All at the same time. Oak shaker-style cabinets sit beneath a laminate worktop with attractive stone-effect tile splashbacks. There’s a stainless-steel 1½ bowl sink and draining board, adjustable shelves and a range of tall cupboards. As with the rest of this house, storage is plentiful and well considered. The boiler is new, installed less than a year ago. The washing machine is built in. A side door leads out to the gated back garden. Study Ideally sized to be used as a home office, study or library. Dual aspect windows look out to the side of the house and the driveway and porch. Gym/garage From the outside it’s clear to see this was once the garage. Today it’s a large, air-conditioned home gym, furnished with rubber matting and double mirrored cupboards. Windows on two walls and a side door further add to this room’s versatility, which could be returned to a garage with relatively little work. Cloakroom Recently refurbished, the cloakroom has half-height real travertine wall and floor tiles, a contemporary close-coupled WC with wall-hung hand basin, and a chromed ladder-style towel rail. “We’ve literally just done the family shower room and downstairs cloakroom.” UPSTAIRS – FIRST FLOOR The spacious wrap-around landing retains an original red brick fireplace, a nod to its 1920s origins before central heating came as standard. Beside this is a little reading nook. The red brick is a nod to the location – Red Shute originates from the red clay that can be found in the area. Additional storage is tucked into corners and beneath stairs, some bespoke and recently added, some original with latched wood doors. A wide triple window looks out to the rear garden and, further along the landing, a pair of Velux windows keep things light during the day. From the landing you have access to the principal and three bedrooms, with stairs taking you up to the next floor for the fifth bedroom and ensuite. Principal bedroom This generously proportioned bedroom feels like it’s occupying its own wing in this spacious house. “We've got a six-foot-wide bed in our room and you wouldn't notice the size, the proportions of the room are so big.” The super-king size bed looks like a standard double in this spacious bedroom, and there’s still more than enough space for accompanying bedside tables, chests of drawers, a dressing table and a sofa or chaise longue. Flush bespoke fitted wardrobes provide a wealth of storage while maintaining an uncluttered feel. Windows on three walls fill the room with natural light, while air conditioning ensures the room stays comfortable in the increasingly hotter summers. The end window has a fantastic view down the length of the garden to the woods beyond. Air conditioning means that even during a heat wave this is a cool, tranquil haven. Ensuite Larger than most family bathrooms, this ensuite bathroom is well equipped and beautifully finished in real marble. The wide shower enclosure has thermostatic controls, a large rainfall showerhead and a handset on a riser bar. The freestanding double-ended bath sits beneath the window, perfect for reading a good book as you enjoy a long relaxing soak. “The bathroom is a tranquil space for any person, it’s perfect to get away from the rest of the family and have a nice bath. It’s quite spa-like.” A double sink vanity unit sits beneath corresponding double mirrored cabinets with spot lighting overhead. The room is further filled with natural light from the two opposing windows. Towels are kept warm and to-hand with two ladder style radiators; a tall radiator sits beside the shower enclosure and a wide radiator sits beside the bath. Set back on either side of the shower enclosure are two built-in cupboards, ideal for stacks of fresh towels and linens, as well as cleaning products and more. “We had a lot of bespoke storage put into the house by a master carpenter cabinet maker. It’s now got a lot of storage, which we didn't have when we first got here.” Bedroom two Another generously proportioned bedroom, this time with period features that include a solid stone fireplace and two built-in cupboards with original latched doors. The room is filled with light thanks to the windows on three walls. One window, with views down the garden, sits above what would make a lovely bright desk space between the cupboards. There’s ample space for a sofa as well as the usual bedroom furniture, which would make this a great bedroom-cum-sitting room for an older child. Bedroom three With a nod to the creative background of the original owners, this room has a beautiful stained glass porthole window featuring a rampant red lion on a deep blue background, with a period brick fireplace tucked away in a corner. This well-sized double bedroom has a built-in wardrobe with period latched door and a picture rail that encircles the room. The window looks out to the front of the house and the open fields beyond. Bedroom four The smallest of the bedrooms, this still provides space for a double bed, bedside table and chest of drawers. This would make a great guest bedroom or second office, should more working from home space be needed. Being opposite the principal bedroom, it would also be ideal as a nursery or young child’s bedroom. Family shower room This spacious shower room has been newly refurbished. The marble tiling is of note, with the huge sheets of marble in the shower beautifully juxtaposed by the delicate herringbone tiles on the surrounding walls. “We've used high-end materials throughout the house. The marble tiles in the bathroom took four men to lift!” The walk-in shower has thermostatic controls, an adjustable spray pattern shower head with a handset on a riser bar. Set into the wall are two shelf recesses, keeping shampoos and cleansers close to hand, while towels are kept warm and within reach on a stylish anthracite ladder-style radiator. A wide mirror sits above a floating double sink vanity unit, with a close-coupled WC against the window wall. Wide windows fill the room with natural light. SECOND FLOOR Follow the turned oak staircase up another floor and you reach the former attic space, now a bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The Velux window overhead ensures the stairs are well lit, with the landing and two eaves storage cupboards providing handy storage space. Bedroom 5 Velux windows on two aspects ensure plenty of natural light, with the quad set giving incredible floor-to-ceiling views across the garden to the woods beyond. This double bedroom is fitted with air conditioning to keep things pleasantly comfortable no matter how hot the day outside. Shower room The spacious bathroom has a corner bath with mixer taps and handset. There’s a vanity topped hand basin with shaver socket, a close-coupled WC and a ladder-style chromed towel radiator. The walls and floor have real travertine tiles with a decorative mosaic band. Outside The house is set back from the road behind a fence and mature hedge. Through the stone pillared entrance, you have a large block-paved driveway with plenty of space to park six or more cars. A mix of high hedges and trees screen the house from neighbours and the road, while the woodland behind and open fields opposite ensure you’re not overlooked. This is a wonderfully private house. “The garden was what sold the house to us. It’s spectacular.” The back garden is huge, the whole plot from front to back extends to two-thirds of an acre. Within the garden are numerous trees, some of which are believed to be up to 300 years old. “It's south facing, backed by trees and is the best part of an acre. It's got lots of old mature trees and shrubs. We just love the fact that some of these trees have been here for hundreds of years.” Running the full width of the house is a large block paved patio, which extends to the first of several sheds, others are hidden from view discretely tucked behind hedges and greenery. “I would say it's an English garden with Mediterranean touches. There are tropical plants and some maples which go bright red.” Heading into the garden is a new octagonal raised decking area. This has been designed specifically for outdoor dining, and in warmer months benefits from being partially shaded by the surrounding trees and hedging. “In summer, this is a lovely spot to sit and have a morning coffee, and an evening sundowner.” Continue further into the garden and you’ve a summer house, with electricity, should you want a quiet spot away from the house to think, read or just sit back and do nothing. Dotted throughout the garden are numerous ornamental trees and shrubs, including a particularly handsome acer, a tree palm, cherry tree and much more. This is a well-established, low-maintenance garden designed to be enjoyed rather than laboured over. “I would say some of these trees are exceptional. I mean, you can't buy a new house and get this.” It would be easy to forget you have neighbours in this very private garden. You’d be hard pressed to catch sight of anyone. “In different times of year, you get different things going on. You're also really, really sheltered, you don't see anyone here, thanks to all the trees.” At the end of the long lawn is a gate that takes you into woodland owned by the neighbouring Downe House School. Parking The house has a large block paved drive which provides parking for six or more cars. Situation Red Shute Hill is surrounded by pretty villages and sprawling countryside, ideal for long rambles. “We've just got some nice walks, you can walk all the way from Hermitage down to Hampstead Norreys. There's a new path down there that’s been put in along the old railway branch line.” For those who like a walk to include a country pub on a walk, your choices include The Bunk Inn, within strolling distance, while a little further afield you have Frilsham and Yattendon, between them home to The Royal Oak, The Pot Kiln and the Renegade Brewery Taproom & Kitchen. “There are lots of nice walks from here. There’s a nice walk down to The Bunk, which is the old country pub. You've got Grimsby Wood at the top. There’s even a fairly large herd of albino fallow deer nearby – so you can very literally see white harts as you walk around.” For dining out, you have your local, The Bunk Inn, and for something Michelin-inspired, you have The Woodspeen, the Vineyard, Goat on the Roof and Malverleys, which are all within a short drive. For culture, you have the iconic and award-winning Watermill Theatre (also a dining location), Arlington Arts, the Corn Exchange and the Living Rainforest.
