Built at the crossroads of Roman roads, the strategic position of ancient Uxellodunum enabled it to become the second-largest city in Berry, after Bourges, within a thousand years. The town's prosperity meant that it came under attack on numerous occasions during troubled times, as evidenced by the famous Tour Blanche (White Tower) built by Richard the Lionheart between 1195 and 1202.

The property is built on what was, in the Middle Ages, the enclosure of the Noble Castle of Issoudun. This was reinforced when Richard the Lionheart decided to erect the Tour Blanche at the beginning of the 13th century. However, the staircase tower suggests that the current structure dates from the 17th or early 18th century, after the great fire of 1651.
