Sardinia Palazzo Diaz: A Private Residence with Royal Ties In Sassari’s historic heart, Palazzo Diaz offers the intimacy of a private home and the grandeur of a nineteenth-century Italian palace. The apartment occupies the second floor (third floor in U.S. usage), with a registered floor area of 271 sq m (approximately 2,917 sq ft). Beneath 14-foot (4.27 m) ceilings, the salons unfold in enfilade, their generous proportions and long sightlines creating an elegant setting for a collection and for entertaining. Polychrome marble inlay, walnut carving by Fratelli Clemente, and figural stuccowork define the interiors; bronzes by Henry Dasson, gilt mirrors, and figural sconces complete a decorative scheme of remarkable unity. Designed by Luigi Fasoli for the Costa banking house in the late nineteenth century, the palace reflects the ambition of its original patrons. Approximately 500,000 lire were devoted to its construction (an estimated equivalent of €17.7 million for the entire building). The historic armored door and steel floor structure recall that banking heritage. From the 1920s through the 1940s, the Diaz family welcomed members of the House of Savoy here for private stays before hunting parties at La Minerva. Guests included Prince Umberto and Princesses Yolanda and Mafalda. These visits connect the residence to the private world of King Victor Emmanuel III and Queen Elena. From 2012 to 2025, works from institutional and other art collections were held here for safekeeping, alongside antiquities and a monumental bronze after Canova. Exhibitions devoted to Picasso took place on the floor below in 2023. Three air-conditioned private rooms, a kitchen, two bathrooms, and two separate WCs complement the reception rooms. For its next owner, this is a rare opportunity to make an Italian residence with royal ties a personal home: to welcome guests in its salons, display a collection, and continue its tradition of hospitality. The offering comprises this apartment. Asking price: €3,950,000. Property brochure available upon request. Private viewings by appointment.
