Down a long drive off a quiet country road in Germantown you’ll find 114 Best Lane. The c1865 post and beam barn has been completely rebuilt and reimagined from the ground up, and a beautiful 1,800 sq ft guest house has been constructed on the property. The thirteen acre property is incredibly private and quiet— the barn is tucked in amongst tall catalpa trees, and pastoral views have been carved into the landscape. The main barn is three levels, the kitchen is adorned with thick marble countertops and open, industrial shelving. The main space has cathedral ceilings, centered around a brick two-sided woodburning fireplace that soars over two stories and anchors the room. The dining area opens through french doors onto the large wraparound deck. Upstairs, the master bedroom is reminiscent of a chateau in the south of France, with an open air soaking tub and a carved marble sink, a powder room is tucked back behind swinging wooden doors. The opposite wing upstairs, accessed by its own stairwell, is currently being used as an artist’s studio. The walkout lower level has a large central room with a woodburning fireplace at the center, two bedrooms tucked off to the side and a full bath. The layout is flexible and can easily accommodate ones specific needs. The guest house is simple and beautiful in its architecture— a long porch overlooks the front field and inside each floor is open and lightfilled. Kitchen and living on the first floor, and an incredibly spacious bedroom on the second. A covetable bathroom, beautifully adorned with antique hardware, is tucked behind barn doors. 114 Best Lane is centrally located just minutes to Otto’s Market and Gaskins restaurant in Germantown, and just 10m to Hudson, Rhinebeck and Amtrak in either direction. L-Wing is a contemporary masterpiece that pays homage to the agrarian roots of the Hudson Valley surrounding it, a true modernist take on the archetypal farmstead. A New York based talented architect duo, after searching for several years for the perfect piece of land, finally settled on this exceptional property just minutes from Germantown, after which they started on an over three-year journey of realizing their most personal and important project yet. Built to the most exacting standards, L-Wing is a perfect example of the integral relationship between architecture and nature, where the surrounding climate, the landscape of the site, and the rural views critically informed every architectural and design decision. The eminently warm and peaceful residence seamlessly integrates Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics with the organic architectural principles of the local vernacular of barns and sheds. The lengthy conceptualization process is evident in the way each window frames a 'scene' within the surrounding landscape, the clever positioning of private versus shared spaces that play on the natural movement of light throughout the house, and the sensoriality of the primary materials used - clear cedar tongue and groove siding, interior glulam beams of impressive proportions, white oak flooring, Brazillian-imported leather-finish Quartizite, and the delicate use of polished concrete. The four-bedroom, five-bath, 4,600 square-foot home sits at the end of a long driveway amid over twelve lush acres, offering complete and total privacy. The expansive living and dining room space is anchored by a fireplace with a custom designed concrete hearth and a fabricated metal chimney in the center. Large floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides flood the room with natural light throughout the day. The impeccably envisioned kitchen, with custom rift oak cabinetry and professional-grade appliances, overlooks the north side of the grounds. Off the kitchen lies the only part of the interior where all four levels are on display in one lens - building up from the lower level, more intimate family room, all the way to the reading nook and walkway at the top, suspended from the immense interior beams. The private wing of the residence hosts three bedrooms and three baths on the upper level, with a fourth, tucked-away guest bedroom suite on the lower level. The landscape is quintessential Hudson Valley, and the views are sweeping. The interior blends seamlessly with the exterior by way of a cedar deck that wraps around almost the entirety of the home, a Japanese Karesansui-inspired garden, several exterior gathering spaces for dining and entertaining, and for the more adventurous, multiple paths that extend into the 'wilder' part of the grounds. L-Wing finds its home in the beautiful surroundings of Germantown and is only 10 minutes from Tivoli, 20 minutes from Hudson, Rhinebeck, and two Amtrak stations, and two hours from New York City.

A sprawling farmhouse set on ten acres with a pond and heated saltwater pool, perfectly situated in the Hudson Valley between Rhinebeck and Hudson. Set back from the road down a long, circular driveway, the home is framed by willow trees and blooming perennials, and the whimsical covered porch is reminiscent of iconic Southern architecture. In a labor of love, Shadley took the structure down to its stone walls and fireplaces and built it again from the ground up in 2005. The roof, made of zinc tiles shipped specifically for the project from France, is only one of the touches of historic elegance that Shadley added to accentuate its unique character.
