Mas Uzès (30)
Magnificent traditional farmhouse in a hamlet in a dominant position! In the heart of the Uzès region, this property is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful homes of the region. Its location, at the top of a small hill in the hamlet, is exceptionally privileged, its spaciousness is marvellous and its renovation is exemplary in its accuracy and beauty. All the historic and authentic features have been preserved, and it has been transformed into a home of the highest standard. You are immediately struck by its proportions and wonderful surroundings. The view is breath-taking, from the Cévennes Mountains to Uzès; the grounds, the old stonework and the centuries-old tree plantations underline its nobility. The original warm-coloured rendering has been cleverly preserved: this is how the dominant features of the past stand out from the commonplace... It's hard to describe the many charms that the house brings to its visitor: this rare pearl is reached by a beautiful outside staircase, immediately followed by an entrance hall with its own fireplace. A dining room with a remarkable ceiling (exposed beams and traditional terracotta tiling) is next to a kitchen fitted with a cooking range, which combines exposed beams and the successful design of a central island, that also opens onto the garden - this large kitchen is flanked by a storeroom; two lounges bathed in light complete the reception area; one, the emblematic room of the residence, is of fantastic size and height - with a magnificent roof frame overhanging the whole and a monumental fireplace centred on the gable... Everywhere, the evidence of its rich past has been preserved - floors, beams, terracotta tiling, old doors - and enhanced by a talented restoration. Its bathrooms and bedrooms, one on the living room level with ensuite bathroom and four on the upper floor, including a complete suite (dressing room and bathroom) are of course treated with the same care and elegance. There are two bathrooms for these last three bedrooms. The exterior is also worthy of note; in addition to a caretaker's “mazet” cottage (50 m2) at one end of the grounds. There are plenty of places to relax, with plenty of shade provided by the rich local vegetation; access to the rear of the house also reveals a good-sized, 12.5 x 5.5m swimming pool, with a pool-house equipped with a kitchen and a large, covered lounge, and here again there is a breath-taking view - this time over the hamlet and the beautiful native bushland in the background. The entire plot extends to 7436 m². There is also a guest studio with its own bathroom, a laundry, a wine cellar and a barn of over 100 m² with a few stables for horses (horse riding in this idyllic commune is very popular). Whatever could be missing from this dream? For further information, please contact your agent: Corine George, Ph. 06.14.86.24.46 (EI registered, No. 351 342 191, Nimes RSAC). Mas Uzès (30)
This ocean of natural bushland, stretching as far as the eye can see, is enveloped by holm oaks and junipers, for lovers of nature and responsible philosophy; it offers a way of life in perfect symbiosis with nature, witness to a harmonious relationship with ecosystems. A woodland path provides access to the estate, set in 5,000 m² of land, away from the hustle and bustle of our urban society and its nuisances. This property takes you to a bend in a grove of dry-stone walls and ‘capitelles’ (dry stone huts), with echoes of a prosperous period when woodcutters and bucolic shepherds criss-crossed the forest buzzing with life. A village well-stocked with shops is just a few kilometres from the property, and the motorway and rail networks can be reached in an hour, not forgetting Uzès, the first Duchy of France, the famous Place aux Herbes and the Ducal castle - 30 minutes away. The buildings once housed all the traditional activities typical of this region of Occitanie, including a silkworm farm, cellars, sheds, barns, a sheepfold, workshop and bread oven, all solidly built from local stone and enlarged over the centuries to meet the needs of the animals, to house workers and store equipment, or to accommodate new births into the family. Traditionally, mulberry trees were grown here to raise silkworms and sheep. For the time being, the living area, which is accessible from the courtyard, is being comfortably renovated. The farmhouse offers 550m2 of potential living space, including a 105m2 apartment and 242m2 of outbuildings. This property is ideally suited to a seasonal rental project and to the latest trends for travellers looking for space and comfort, as well as unusual and eco-friendly breaks. Mas Issirac (30)
An ancient fortified castle, its gîte and 12 ha of grounds in a hamlet between the Cèze and Ardèche rivers, with a commanding view of the Cévennes. The tarmac road is the only access from the village, turning soon into a track stretching over the last few hundred metres to the property entrance. The hamlet of Sauvan fully embodies its Occitan name, derived from the Latin 'Silvanus' - 'man of the woods'. Like a haven in a green desert, some of its buildings can be spotted at the bottom of the space reserved for vehicle parking. The owners, who restored the hamlet from ruins, have taken great care to create a series of cobbled paths and steps leading to a central square offering a breathtaking view of the setting sun and the Cevennes mountains in the distance: Mont Lozère and Mont Aigoual. Providing an obvious natural protection, the gorges of the Cèze, whose meanders and cliffs can be glimpsed from this spot, have been populated for thousands of years. Subsequently, the region developed thanks to the presence of the Knights Templar, as evidenced by the village of Montclus with its square keep, the remains of a castle built in 1275, and the Bernas Commandery, which formed part of the latter. The Sauvan hamlet, which fell into ruin and oblivion for decades, saw its history fade away. However, its prominent position and its connection to the 'Castrum de Montecluso', as well as the presence of older fortifications, suggest that it was a strategic spot for the Order of the Knights Templar. The property complex as it stands today is a succession of buildings, probably dating back to the 13th century, arranged around the central square and its cross. The estate is divided into five separate living areas - not including the gîte (guest house), a former drying shed built on the other side of the square, to the south: 'le grand mas' ('the large farmhouse') and 'le tunnel' ('the tunnel'), accessed from the south courtyard, 'les paillers' ('the straw barns'), 'l'épiscopal' ('the bishop's residence') and 'les muriers' ('the mulberry trees'), from the alley to the east. Entirely enclosed by stone walls, the only entrance is to the south, into a first courtyard at the bottom of a flight of steps. It is accessed via a porch topped by a keystone dating from 1783, which is adjoined by an impressive bakehouse with a slate roof (in an impeccable state of conservation) or from the north via an impressive carriage door featuring a chestnut lintel, which opens onto a second courtyard. The large farmhouse, the most impressive building in the hamlet, stretches along a south-north axis from the lime-tree square to the mulberry tree alley, which runs along the eastern facade of the complex. While the latter, which borders single-storey dwellings, appears to be low, the western facades, taking advantage of the sloping terrain, comprise three levels. The buildings are of limestone, with dressed stone used for the jambs and structural elements, and coursed rubble masonry for the load-bearing walls. The roofs of the various buildings are clad with monk-and-nun tiles. Committed to preserving this important architectural heritage, the current inhabitants undertook a complete overhaul of the roofs less than two years ago.
