Castle Pouzauges (85)
Ref.4165: Elegant 19th Century chateau for sale in the vendean bocage. The property is situated in the Vendée bocage, close to the Gâtine, on the borders of the Deux-Sèvres. The bocage is made up of hedges, copses, rivers, meadows, fields and small villages. The nearest village is 3 km away, and offers all local services, including a mini-market, doctor and chemist, as well as two primary schools (state and private). Colleges and lycées are a 10-minute drive away. This part of the Vendée is particularly well known for its history and tourist attractions. The sea is around 90 km away. At the beginning of the 15th century, a fiefdom which depended on the lordship of Parthenay existed on the site of the current château. In 1860, a Justice of the Peace, Frédéric Naud, commissioned a château from the very fashionable architect Paul Joseph Guillerot, who had designed many châteaux in the Vendée. Mr Naud had become mayor of the Commune. The building was planned in an existing clearing, high up, with a beautiful view over the surrounding countryside. The entrance facade was soberly designed, while the other side, which had no door, was enlivened by the play of projections created by the small square pavilions. Around 1905, a veranda with a roof terrace accessible via a bedroom was added. Inside, a clever layout of glazed French windows around the entrance hall provides plenty of light and views of the lovely countryside outside. The château, which spans more than 300 sqm, has been partly renovated and is very light and airy. It has a serene atmosphere. This chateau is the ideal property for those who love the countryside. It's also the perfect place for a family or to welcome guests. The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, a study, a dining room (26 sqm), a lounge (30sqm), a kitchen (24sqm), a boiler room, a shower room with toilet and a conservatory awaiting renovation. A beautiful wooden staircase leads to the upper floors. Upstairs, the landing leads to 5 bedrooms, a bathroom and a toilet. One of the bedrooms has access to the roof terrace of the former greenhouse, from where there is a very pleasant view over the parklands. A large attic (100sqm) could be converted. There is also a partial cellar. The outbuildings include: New wooden stables, 5 boxes Shed (fodder storage) Greenhouse to restore Leanto to restore Cellar The parklands cover almost 17,30 acres, with no close neighbours. A beautiful driveway winds through a wooded area to reach the château, which is set in a dominant position and enjoys lovely views over the countryside. Castle Chantonnay (85)
Ref. 4137: Charming castle for sale, for professional use, near vendeen coast Situated in the south of the Vendée bocage, near vendeen coast, the Château is on the edge of a picturesque village, not far from an attractive town with all amenities. It is ideally suited to tourism, with a restaurant and professional kitchen, guest rooms and two gîtes. The bocage region of the Vendée is mainly made up of fields surrounded by coppice, hedges and copses, forming a landscape of unspoilt natural charm. The small village where the Château is located has a rich history: in the 15th century, this trading town was renowned throughout the region for its fairs and varied crafts. In 1721, it was one of the twenty largest towns in Bas-Poitou! The fairs lost their importance in the 16th century, and after the Revolution they were held only four times a year. Built between 1850 and 1856, this Château is typical of the buildings of the period: a vast, ostentatious residence in keeping with the recovery and reconstruction of the region after the Vendée War. It is a square building, two storeys high. The garden level has a large surface area thanks to two low wings with concealed roofs, while the central mass rises over four levels of windows above a brick base. This strong vertical effect is accentuated by the high chimney stacks and corbelled turrets at each corner, known as pepperboxes. In addition, the rear façade features a polygonal front decorated with an attractive superimposition of Ionic and Corinthian orders. Inside, after climbing a granite staircase, visitors are welcomed into a vast entrance hall (40 sqm) with columns with composite capitals opening onto a beautiful dining room (43 sqm) with fine wood panelling, parquet flooring and a fireplace. Ceiling height is 4.50 metres. To the left are three reception rooms (40 sqm, 45 sqm and 22 sqm). On the right-hand side, the more technical part, a corridor with wood panelling and stucco leads to a professional kitchen (38 sqm), an office, cold rooms and toilets that can accommodate the public (PMR standard). A huge, beautifully curved staircase leads to the upper floors. It has a remarkable original wrought-iron banister. The upper floors can also be accessed via a back staircase. On the first floor, a vast corridor leads to four bedrooms, each with its own shower room and toilet, located in one of the four towers. All have beautiful oak parquet flooring. The second floor has the same layout as the first, with four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and toilet. Beautiful oak parquet flooring. The attic is partly converted, with a small kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The other part can be converted. A huge cellar completes the ensemble: a large central corridor with external exits at each end leads to a group of nine fully vaulted, stone-paved rooms. It covers the entire surface area of the Château. The outbuildings comprise: The orangery : This pretty stone and brick building with a slate roof is in need of restoration. It is 24 m long and 11 m wide. A large attic is possible. The stables : This rendered stone building dates from 1880 and comprises a central building flanked by two wings. The building requires restoration works. It is 26 metres long and 13 metres wide. The building includes garages, stables, a tack room and the possibility of attics throughout. The gîtes : In the former orchard, separated from the Château, surrounded by old stone walls, two gîtes have been restored. The first gîte sleeps 6 people (€1,000 in high season) and the second sleeps 4 (€760 in high season). A swimming pool (5x10m) allows guests to cool off after visiting the rich heritage of the Vendée. The park covers approximately 6,18 acres, some of which is enclosed by walls. The English-style park is planted with large trees of various species. In particular, there are two huge sequoias. The woodland of around one hectare is planted mainly with oaks. Away from the Château is the orchard, enclosed by old walls: several fruit trees, including fig, mirabelle, apple and peach trees. Castle Saintes (17)
Ref. 4397 : 14th C. Listed medieval Castle for sale, in Charente-Maritime Department The property is located in the heart of Saintonge Romane in the Charente-Maritime department. This 14th century medieval château (listed ISMH) is a former stronghold steeped in history and authenticity. Close to the A10 motorway and Saintes train station, this property is easily accessible from the capital. Jeanne de Parthenay inherited the land of Nieul in 1370, and her husband, Jean Chaudrier, an ancestor of Ronsard, built this fortified castle. Mayor of La Rochelle, he is famous for having delivered the town from the English thanks to a ruse. In the 1550s, the lords of Nieul followed the ideas of Calvin. In 1573 and 1574, Protestant worship took place here. From 1630 onwards, there were many co-lords until 1720, when the castle reverted to Gabriel Limousin. The château was sold as national property in 1793, and divided between three farmers. Since 1972, it has undergone extensive restoration. The castle features irregular polygonal walls with projecting buttresses at the corners of the curtain walls, reminiscent of the military architecture of the 13th and 14th centuries. The curtain walls, which are more than 12 metres high, were crowned by a parapet walk, which can still be seen on the facades of the two square towers. In the inner courtyard, the dwellings and outbuildings are set against the wall. Two of the three stair towers remain, the third only leading to the vaulted basement rooms. The property is accessed via two drawbridges over the moat, which has now been drained, one leading to the ogival gate and the other to the postern. And there you discover this magnificent ensemble that cannot leave you indifferent. The charm of the place is immediately apparent. Many events have been organised in this unique jewel, including concerts, heritage classes for children, exhibitions, night shows, films and short films. The château complex, covering around 700 sqm, comprises two main buildings. An habitable dwelling, fully furnished with period and stylish furniture, built over two levels. The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, a vestibule, a large lounge with its monumental fireplace, a second lounge, dining room and kitchen. The 1st floor has parquet flooring throughout and comprises a landing, a library, 6 bedrooms and 3 shower and toilet rooms. The outbuildings have been converted into living quarters, ideal for a tourist activity, and are sold fully furnished with period furniture. The building is also built on two levels. On the ground floor: a reception area, a patio, a refectory, a professionally equipped kitchen, a shower room, a bathroom and sanitary facilities. The 1st floor has parquet flooring and comprises a lounge, 3 independent bedrooms, 2 dormitories, two shower rooms and sanitary facilities. This beautiful property has an outbuilding used as a garden shed and workshop. This former stronghold has magnificent vaulted cellars that have been restored by the current owners. The property extends over 2.47 acres, including its former stronghold surrounded by an irregular enclosure with curtain walls 12 to 14 metres high, pierced by archères, crowned by a parapet walk and flanked by square towers. The moat has now been drained and there is a meadow where you can take full advantage of this place steeped in history. The chateau is listed on the Inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques: Enclosure wall and postern; turret in the east building containing a spiral staircase; remains of the south wing, now destroyed: start of a spiral staircase and two underground rooms : listed by order of July 1988.
