Castle Bourgoin-Jallieu (38)
A 19th century chateau with 14 5 hectares of grounds surrounded by verdant countryside in north-west Isère. This vast estate, extending over approx. 14.5ha of gently sloping, uninterrupted land, consists predominantly of woodlands. A shady driveway leads to a large gravel parking area to the north-west of the main building. It then continues towards a courtyard in front of the chateau, where the woods give way to a large clearing. A secondary path followed by a flight of steps lead to a swimming pool on a plateau overlooking the forest. On the other side, a small wooden chapel is tucked away beneath the trees. This was originally a forest house linked to an ancient 16th century Cistercian abbey. After the French Revolution, it was used as the home of the steward responsible for managing the national forest. In 1888, a local grandee commissioned the architect Joseph-Étienne Mallaval to build a substantial four-storey extension. The chateau, which has undergone several periods of construction and renovation, stands on the north-eastern edge of the grounds. Its most striking external architectural features are those dating from the 19th century. The distinct, homogenous volumes of each section follow one another cascading down to the outbuilding, reflecting the different periods in which they were built. The adobe, pebble, rammed earth concrete and clinker block facades are rendered. The roofs, clad with slate, monk and nun or flat “beaver tail” tiles are in good condition; they have all been renovated, with the exception of the roof of the 19th-century main building. Today divided into various lodgings spread over three levels, the building has a total floor area of approx. 870 m². It is currently used as tourist accommodation, benefiting from one of the most peaceful environmental areas.

Castle Aubenas (07)
IN THE HEART OF THE REGIONAL PARK OF THE MONTS D’ARDECHE This stronghold is located in a beautiful village near Largentière and Aubenas, 1 hour from Montélimar. With two towers dating from the 14th and 15th century, built around a superb central stone spiral staircase leading to three levels and an attic. The central part was built in 1567 with the addition of watchtowers, loopholes and machicolations on the towers by the Seigneur de la Motte de Chalendar then syndic of the Vivarais, hiring several soldiers to defend the house and his family against looters. At the end of the 18th century, the living room and the Florentine suite were redesigned according to Tuscan inspiration with an Italian terrace and French ceilings. The house develops around 600 sqm with a cellar, attics, an independent tower, a garage, small outbuildings under the moat with a well fed by a spring. The exteriors of approximately one hectare include five different gardens, two plots of vines, a swimming pool. This rather austere defense castle for its northern facade has a completely different easterly exposure with terraces and large openings overlooking the Florentine garden with arcades supporting the terrace and giving the whole a beautiful Tuscan villa look. Castle Fareins (01)
Majestic 17th-century pleasure residence on the banks of the Saône, just 30 minutes from Lyon, 45 minutes from St Exupéry airport and 30 minutes from Macon TGV station. This château is listed as one of the region's finest jewels. Built on the site of a former 12th-century stronghold house, this prestigious residence was rebuilt between 1610 and 1616. This Italian-style château evokes the tranquillity of pleasure residences and the atmosphere of Italian villas, and has retained its feudal structure with moat, drawbridge and corner towers. Built of gilded Beaujolais stone, it comprises a central three-storey main building, which once housed a consistory on the first floor and a Protestant temple on the upper floor. This central body, topped by a high roof, is flanked by two two-storey wings, forming the owners' living quarters. It is flanked on the north side by two projecting square towers topped with imperial domes. On the south side, it opens onto a double flight of stairs leading to a vast formal garden, and beyond to a wilder English-style park. This neglected historic property was renovated in 2000 by its current owners, who have brought it back to life. The building is listed as a Historic Monument, as is the parkland, thus protecting the immediate environment of this building and its 39.6 hectares. The interior boasts a number of historic original features, including a modern empty staircase, which opens onto a central void via arcades, and magnificent reception rooms that cross between the gardens on the south side and the courtyard on the north side. Some of the flats have been restored, including one in the Louis XV style. The former Temple on the second level, with a space of 250 m², remains to be restored. The original decor of the residence is sumptuous, with murals dating from 1632 by the Italian artist Pietro Ricchi, a Tuscan painter. The semi-buried basement housed the kitchens. The boiler room is located on this level. The estate includes numerous outbuildings: the caretaker's cottage at the entrance, which is only partly occupied, a former farmhouse that could accommodate families and guests, with its outbuildings and swimming pool, and the parklands with their orchard, vegetable garden, topiary and elegant plane tree-lined driveway.
