In the 16th century, the Charente region was chosen for the establishment of paper mills due to the quality of its rivers. This paper mill was built in 1539. It was rebuilt in its current form in 1635. In the 17th century, Angoulême paper was a benchmark for writing and printing. In the 17th century, the main customers of this paper mill were in England, Germany, Sweden and the United Provinces. The Verget mill continues to this day to produce handmade paper for luxury editions.
