Castle Carcassonne (11)

13th century castle, between Toulouse and Perpignan. COMPLETELY RESTORED! Location: Located in the south of France in the heart of the green Aude, 15 minutes from the medieval bastide of Mirepoix, 45 minutes from the city of Carcassonne and Toulouse, we are in the French countryside, where calm and serenity emanate from the place. Motorway access is 15 minutes away, TGV station and airports are 45 minutes away. History: The Seigneurie de Plaigne was built in the 13th century by the Cathar lord Guillaume de Plaigne. His last descendant, Anne de Plaigne, who married the Count of Pibrac in 1642, sold the castle to François Paul de Béon-Masse-Cazeaux, Grand Prior of the Order of Malta in Toulouse, who refounded it in 1688 as a commandery of the Order of Saint John. It was the largest and most recent commandery in Languedoc. It remained part of the Order of Malta's property until the Revolution. The castle : the elegance of this place is surprising. The park with its hundred year old trees gives off a softness and freshness. The castle has retained the spirit of the fortress, as evidenced by the great Hall of the Knights. However, it has been tastefully restored by two generations of owners. The 12 double rooms in the castle and the 4 double rooms in the independent cottage offer a capacity of 32 people in absolute comfort with a swimming pool. What we think: We see many exceptional properties. This castle is a timeless place where one feels a great sense of well-being whilst remaining connected to a regional metropolis.

Castle Castelnaudary (11)

At the heart of this pre-Napoleonic ensemble of buildings lies an impressive and substantial main home with an elegant slim turreted roofline and grand tall, original windows giving the impression of being much bigger than it actually is. The high ceilings of the entrance hall are mirrored on both the ground and the first floors. One wing of the ground floor enjoys an impressive dining room with an open fireplace and original stone detailing and a huge kitchen occupying the full end of the building with two large marble islands and modern appliances. The kitchen is a perfect marriage of modern eclectic and traditional pieces such as the Italian chandeliers that characterise so much of this property. On the other side are an elegant reception room, salon and library. Upstairs the 5 bedrooms are spacious with views over either the Black mountains to one side or the mature Mediterranean garden to the other. The master bedroom is vast, spanning the width of the house with two separate bathrooms and a large dressing room adjoining it. All the rooms are well proportioned and eye-catching. The house has 4 separate working original fireplaces but there is also central heating throughout provided by an efficient air-pump system but utilising handsome original cast-iron radiators in keeping with the property. The floors are either the original tiles or beautiful original herringbone parquet. In front of the main house, flanking it either side are two solid stone garrison-like buildings which in previous times have been used as workman's cottages when this place was a farm or vineyard. One currently is used to host magical dinner parties, the other needs developing. On the grounds are the following properties - Two large, attractive 3 bedroom stone houses which could serve as a friends and family place or gites. Possible gite business (subject to necessary permissions) There is also an artist’s studio, further storage units, a large greenhouse and a tiny chapel! The grounds have century old trees, including Lebanese cyprus trees (popular with the Knights Templar), a manicured lawn with a curve that hints at the old roman wall on which it is terraced and a koi carp pond. The property also has a swimming pool, some wild land and the whole 3.6 hectares of land are surrounded by trees making it completely invisible to even the odd car passing in the distance on what is a quiet, country road to the local village. If you are passionate about unique properties, wanting a family home that is big enough for friends and to entertain, or wanting a property that could bring in an income - this place is a must-see. Between the château, the bastide and the two sheepfolds, the estate currently comprises 30 bedrooms with the possibility of creating 10 additional bedrooms for a potential of more than 40 bedrooms. A beautiful 10th-century chapel stands at the far end of the château. The estate covers 350 hectares, including around 3.4 hectares of AOP Corbières vines planted with Syrah and Grenache. The vines are cultivated directly by the estate and the harvest is taken to the local cooperative winery. Castle Ales (30)

A castle and its feudal keep set on the eastern flank of its 30-hectare estate in the Vallée Française in the Cévennes mountains. Formerly the stronghold of the Arnal family, who at the end of the 17th century owned most of the valley and the hamlet of Beaumelle, hence the name Arnal de la Beaumelle, the castle was burnt down in 1702 during the War of the Camisards. When it was rebuilt between 1730 and 1740, it lost most of its fortified appearance. The keep still dominates the surrounding buildings constructed along a lane: a castle resembling a feudal residence flanked by two towers, as well as a number of outbuildings destined for farming, including cowsheds and a shed for drying chestnuts. This mainly west-facing hilltop hamlet commands the southern valley. Fed by several springs, the estate has developed over the last two centuries thanks to livestock activities and terraced crop cultivation on the many well-oriented 'restanques” (terraces). The river at the bottom of the valley used to power several mills.

Listed castle Bizanet (11)

History : Château de Saint Martin de Toques. This castle is considered to be the only completely reconstructed privately owned Catharic castle still in existence. Its origins go back further than the anti-Catholic religious movement that flourished in the region from 1100 to 1300; they date back to Roman times. In Roman times Saint Martin de Toques served as a guard post for the Roman roads that wound through the countryside below. Later, the castle became the property of the Vicomtesse de Narbonne. When the previous owner acquired the castle in 1990, it was in ruins. Something - the beauty of the location with a 360-degree view over the Corbières vineyards, the rugged strength of the remaining massive walls, the romance of the drawbridge - intrigued him so much that he embarked on a multi-year, multi-million- euro restoration. He didn't just rebuild, but restored every detail as it might have been in 978 AD, when the powerful de Narbonne family inhabited the site. Since there were not enough original stones for the entire project, additional material was excavated from a neighboring hill. Antique dealers from around the world were contacted to procure all the elements: the massive interlocking wooden doors, the huge carved stone fireplaces, the narrow spiral staircases, the gargoyles filling the plunge pool in the center of the courtyard with water. During the restoration, the previous owner added modern amenities that were carefully hidden so as not to destroy the historic atmosphere. The floors are made of solid stone slabs, others of oak blocks, 25 cubes in square oak frames that rattle quietly against each other as you walk on them. Most of the rooms have electric underfloor heating, making the castle pleasant to live in even in winter. Light switches are hidden in tiny niches carved into the rock walls. Indirect mood lighting provides light under the wooden beams. 7 of the 8 bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, all individually appointed to match the charm of each bedroom. The bathroom fixtures and fittings are all antique and unique. Materials such as sandstone, marble, wood and copper are mainly used. This makes it possible for residents to feel the atmosphere of a bygone era without sacrificing the comforts of today. Two modern showers and 4 modern toilets have been carefully integrated. After 25 years of reconstruction and renovation, the property was sold in 2019 to the current owner, who continued the work with the aim of creating and renting unique apartments on the farm and raising the castle to a new level of quality of life.
