The boyar house, now a historical monument, located in a charming zone of Bucharest, was built in 1894, according to J.E. D’Alfonce de Saint Omer’s project, a famous French architect, at the request of the Costa-Foru family, family which, for several generations, gave prominent personalities to the Romanian society, in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. The noble style of the house fits perfectly in the late XX century French genre of “particulier hotel”, defined by the theme of the colossal piano noble windows of the living room, accentuated by the decorative wrought iron elements. The dominant style is eclectic French on the upper floors, and the restructuring of the lower floors shows Moorish-Florentine influences. The house at 9 Verde Street (today Gheorghe Manu street) was built between 1911 and 1923, initiated by Tațiana Niculescu-Dorobanțu. One of the four daughters of Ion C. Brătianu, Tațiana (1870-1940) married in 1900 Ilie I. Niculescu-Dorobanțu (1873-1943), liberal political figure and prefect of Ilfov. Through their properties will also feature the Darvari manor, close to Bucharest. The plans designed by architect Grigore Cerchez (Cerkez) specified „a building with 2, 3 and 4 levels, massive walls, covered with tiles”, occupying 668,29 square meters. In a letter from 9th of May 1910 addressed to her sister Măriuţa Pillat, then in Paris, Tațiana confessed: „I believe we will have a truly beautiful mansion, Louis XII style, with carved stone and exposed brique”. On 25 September 1913, Taţiana was in France, writing to Sabina Cantacuzino: „The castles on Loire I am not even mentioning, I am amazed by so much beauty and very proud to realize that, without possible comparation to these, my house is very beautiful. Unfortunately, the narrow street makes the palace look crammed.” To furnish the interior, Tațiana chose Romanian traditional art objects and pieces from Antique shops in Paris and Munich. From Spain she brought furniture and tapestries. She wanted everything to be perfect and told her close friends: „I will show you this room only when it is completely furnished.” The imposing building bears the allure of a Gothic cathedral, with exquisite constructive and decorative elements: the exposed brick façade, in several shades of red, the towers’ silhouettes, the entrance portal, the imposing windows, with carved stone elements in Neo-gothic fashion, the cornices, gargoyles, stained glass windows and pointed arches that mark the exterior and interior. In his will, Ilie I. Niculescu-Dorobanțu donated the building to the Ion C. Brătianu Establishment, provided that it became the museum „Ilie, Tațiana and Ion Niculescu-Dorobanțu”. Between 1948-1957, the house hosted the canteen of the employees of the Minister of Industry. In 1956, following the pressures of the Direction of Historic Monuments, that considered the building „one of the most valuable in the Capital from an architectural point of view”, it was classified as part of the heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Education, undergoing consolidation works. Starting 1958, it hosted the Technical school of choreography, with 300 students. Today, more than one century after its construction, the impressive Gothic Revival residence maintains its mysterious allure, fascinating the passers-by with its imposing dimensions and unique construction details, crafted by one of the most important Romanian architects. Curved, brick paths lead the steps through areas of thick grass or dwarf flowers and over 30 varieties of roses in the English garden, but on the grounds there are also oaks, maples and ornamental shrubs over 150 years old; lavender is cultivated on 20 acres (of the 7.8 hectares, 1.28 ha is urban land and 4.8 ha is arable land). The manor was gifted as a hunting estate by Count Zichy Vasonckeoy Ferenc, Minister of Trade in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to his son Tivadar in 1899. Today the property is also known as Hajas Manor after the current owners, but in the title deed it is referred to as a castle. Built in the middle of the nineteenth century by baron Urban Petru of Monyoro, the mansion is located on the 79th National highway, on the road between Arad and Oradea, 28 km from Arad. In 1994, the mansion was completely renovated, and all the original architectural elements were preserved. The mansion provides the modern comfort, as it is connected to the water network, it has its own sewage and three gas central heating systems. There is an annex to the main building, equipped with all the standard utilities. As the yard is quite big, another house is being built, which will be used for residential purposes. In front of the mansion, there is a 50 sqm pool. There are thermal water springs at a depth of 700 m, which can be used to fill up the pool. Urban of Monyoro family was one of the important noble families of the Hungarian aristocracy. As mentioned in official records (1828), the first family member was Joseph Urban, and the family’s home was in Monyorod (today Manerau, Arad). The neoclassical mansion in Simand (only a few kilometers from Monyorod) was built in the second half of the 19th century. The mansion most likely belonged to Gyula Urban, the father of the most important member of the family, Peter Urban (1870-1935). Starting with the Eneolithic period up to the year 953 – when it is officially mentioned for the first time -, and on the modern times, Simand was one of the most important places in Transylvanian history. Moreover, in the 19th century, Simand was a strong economic hub, organizing fairs, having also present a strong Jewish community (in 1828 there were 400 Jewish people).
