A resonant name from the War of 1877 is that of General Alexandru Angelescu, a career officer with multiple honors and decorations, and one of the great landowners from whom the entire cultural heritage of the Pissiota family from Poienarii Burchii, Prahova County, descends. Born in 1850, Alexandru Angelescu climbed the ranks of the military hierarchy step by step and received multiple distinctions throughout his career, including the Order of the Star of Romania, Knight grade (1889), the Order of the Star of Romania, Knight grade (1897), the Order of the Star of Romania, Commander grade (1912), the Order of the Crown of Romania, Commander grade (1901), and the Order of the Iron Crown, 2nd class, conferred by His Majesty, the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, Franz Josef, on September 16, 1896. After the general’s death, which occurred on September 13, 1923, his coffin with the body was transported and placed in the family vault in Poienarii Burchii, very close to the current manor house, the funerary monument being classified as a historical and architectural monument, made of Carrara marble, the work of Italian artist Paolo Triscornia di Ferdinando (1853–1936). The semicircle is the geometric figure chosen to complement and sweeten the straight lines of the window boxes and blazons on the facade; it is found at the bay window, at the windows facing the street and in the double-arched pediment. The double doors at the entrance complement the classic style of the building with decorative garlands and paneling. The windows are high, and the window casing adds an extra touch of elegance; the same role is played by the small iron decorations that serve as fasteners for downspouts. The ground floor is located on a high basement and this lends it presence. Inside, the building requires renovation work but it promises to reward you with spaces with personality that still preserve, in some rooms, the original parquet flooring and stoves with beautiful ironwork. The upper floor is not fully visible from the front; it reveals itself on the side, where there is also a secondary entrance to the building. The unfurnished attic can be lofted as a storage space. The area still retains many buildings from the end of the 19th century, which gives it a bohemian air and guarantees protection from an urban planning point of view. Designed by the family architect, G. Gracoski, the villa of Commander Nicolae Gracoski is one of the beautiful historical houses of the Capital. Mântuleasa slum was founded during the Brâncoveni period outside the city and was to develop around the church of the same name, being incorporated in the hearth of the city in 1752. Personalities such as Mihai Eminescu, Mircea Eliade, Petre Țuțea, Panait Istrati or Mircea Vulcănescu, lived and created in the houses with Parisian perfume in the famous slum. Built at the end of 1927, with a four-level layout, the house was designed for practical, generous spaces that would fully benefit from natural light through tall windows. The Neoclassical style with harmonized elements predominates on the outside and continues elegantly on the inside, with floral friezes on the walls and lacy scaffolding on the ceilings. The current owner, a lover of beauty, took care for three years of total consolidation and restoration, with the preservation of all the original elements, a process by which this architectural jewel was reborn and became more than just a living space. The structure was uncovered and consolidated, the sanitary and electrical installations were changed, the roof was changed and equipped with double glazed windows with laminated wood frames, operated by remote control, the interior doors and windows were made of laminated wood, the bathroom and kitchen floors they were made of painted cement, the other rooms have oak parquet, split air conditioners were installed, two fireplaces were added, one on the ground floor and the other on wood in the attic. In a Bucharest of high hopes, fueled by the end of the First World War, Dr. Ion Moscu was constructing his house, on a land bought from the Catargi family. Doctor Ion Moscu was a leading personality of the time, being the first Romanian doctor trained in Paris, doctor of the Patriarch of Romania and of the Royal House. The architectural plans of his house were made by the famous architect Gh. Simotta, who sketched a splendid Neo-Romanian style building. Gheorghe Simotta (1891-1979) was born into a family of Aromanians from the mountains of Macedonia and took refuge with his family in Romania after graduating high school. He attended the Superior School of Architecture under the guidance of masters Petre Antonescu and Ermil Pangratti. His more than 120 projects are from the inter-war period and are mostly found in Bucharest: the Patriarchal Residence, Darvari Hermitage, Gomoiu Hospital and numerous private villas, collective dwellings and funerary monuments in Bellu cemetery. His early style is based on Neo-Romanian elements, to which are gradually added modernist, Art Deco, Balkan resonances or influences of Byzantine decorative art. The restrictions imposed by the communist regime made him abandon his design activity and serve for 30 years as a professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Bucharest. After a meticulous rehabilitation, modernization and restoration project that lasted about three years, Moscu's building in the heart of the Capital became a veritable boutique hotel. The downtown location and architectural value imposed the concept of boutique hotel. Currently, it has ten rooms with generous surfaces (25-40 sqm) and a 90 sqm apartment, some of them equipped with balcony or loggia. Each room is furnished differently, according to the history and architecture of the building. The furniture in classic style is complemented by pieces with styles from different eras: Ludovic XV, Art Nouveau, Biedermeier or Empire. For the finishing of the precious interiors, solid wood, Versailles parquet and marble were used. This historic monument, built at the end of the 19th century, bears with nobility the signs of an era when Bucharest flourished and started its urban modernization, being dubbed Little Paris. At that time, the French model established itself as the main landmark in architecture, but also for everyday clothing, gestures and accessories. The French language became the emblem of the cultivated socialites, and foreign travelers were pleasantly impressed by a Bucharest that was gradually detaching itself from the Orient and the Balkans, in order to connect with Europe through the French cultural model. French influences can be found in the architectural style of the Merchant Dimitrie Petrescu's house, built at the intersection of Berzei Street with Calea Griviței, two avenues hosting an important part of Bucharest’s history. On the outside, the building preserves intact all the architectural elements, catching the eye with the elegance and the decorative elements applied on the window pediments. Inside, the high rooms with ceilings spectacularly decorated with rosettes, friezes and cornices with floral patterns, bring the nostalgia of a musical evening with guests from the high life of the capital.
