Belém is known for being a historical area, one of its main points of interest being the Jerónimos Monastery, an impressive 16th century building, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the National Archaeology Museum and the Navy Museum. Other places of interest include the Torre de Belém, a 16th century fortification, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, a monument in honour of Portuguese navigators, and the Palácio Nacional de Belém, the official residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic. Belém is also known for its delicious pastéis de Belém, which are sold in a famous pastry shop, and for its beautiful gardens, such as the Tropical Botanical Garden and the Praça do Império Garden. Besides the cultural heritage the parish of Belém is also quite rich in local commerce, with many restaurants, cafes, shops and museums. But it is mainly a residential area, with a great diversity of housing, from historical buildings to modern real estate developments. In terms of public transport, the parish of Belém is well served, with several bus, tram and train lines that allow an easy connection to the city centre and other areas of Lisbon. In addition, the parish has a train station, which allows a direct connection to Cascais.
