Property with pool and garden Florac Trois Rivières (48)

A renovated former silkworm farm, its wooded grounds and covered swimming pool, within the Cévennes National Park, in the south of the Lozère department. Just a couple of steps away from Florac’s downtown area and sheltered from view, the property, protected by a stone wall, extends over wooded grounds and is accessible via a gate, communicating with one of the village’s secondary roads, which leads to two buildings: the former silk farm and now the main dwelling, as well as an outbuilding that has been converted into a workshop. Between the two, a patio shaded by a trellis is an invitation to eat meals outside on nice days, whereas, further on and hidden behind the property’s first rows of trees, is a wooden chalet as well as a covered and heated swimming pool. In addition, at one end of the grounds, a second outbuilding was converted to accommodate visitors, while the property’s wide variety of trees and the breadth of its verdant foliage create, when strolling through the grounds, a succession of breath-taking and peaceful landscapes. Lastly, a second gate, located in the back of the property, makes it possible to park several vehicles without creating an eyesore for the dwelling’s inhabitants.

House with pool and garden Clamecy (58)

An 18th-century manor house with a garden, swimming pool and outbuildings, in the Nièvre area, in the upper part of Clamecy. Passers-by will have difficulty seeing the early 18th century house, due to it being set back from the street on which it is situated. Two gates, one for cars, the other for pedestrians, open into the property from the street. Sober pilasters frame the main gate, on either side of which stand walls that may have recently been lowered. After the entrance porch, a gravelled drive runs past an outbuilding to the right before reaching the small patio that serves as a stoop to the south of the house. The drive then turns to the left to another outbuilding, before reaching the gate that opens onto the garden, which offers an unbeatable view of the town of Clamecy and the Saint Martin collegiate church, a masterpiece of Burgundy Gothic architecture. The entirely walled garden was previously occupied by a religious community as demonstrated by vestiges identified on the site, probably before the French Revolution. The three buildings have plastered stone facades, are two to three storeys high with straight or low arched windows, and roofs of various shapes, with slate tiles on the house and flat tiles on the outbuildings.

House with pool and garden Le Val (83)

A former 18th century farmhouse which has been renovated and extended over the years in the hills of Green Provence, set in 1 hectare of grounds planted with lush vegetation. . After turning off a departmental road, the property is accessed via a roughly 100-metre-long dirt track, in the middle of the vines. A low wooden gate at the rear of the house to the north opens onto a vast, flat area where several vehicles can be parked, and where a remarkable oak tree which is over 400 years old takes pride of place. Behind it, a wooded area slopes down to the stream that runs along the western edge of the property. More than 1 hectare of dense vegetation surrounds the property, which is entirely enclosed, giving it the utmost privacy. Mainly facing south, the original residence was built in the early 18th century and underwent several extensions during the 19th and 20th centuries. The two-storey building has a double-pitched, canal-tiled roof edged with a double row of spandrels. The façades are rendered in an ochre colour and have large-paned windows and white wooden shutters. A veranda with white wrought-iron frames and a wisteria canopy was added in the 20th century and extends the west side of the main façade. Several delicately landscaped outdoor areas stretch out in front of and on either side of the building. A gravelled terrace with a fountain, planted with ancient plane trees, mulberry trees and a Canadian maple, runs along the front of the building and leads down a few steps to the pool area further down on the west side. On the other side of the terrace to the east, there is a stone basin above vegetable patches bordered by low drystone walls. Further down, there is a grassy area planted with olive trees before the orchard where several varieties of fruit trees are planted.

House with terrace Angouleme (16)

A 10-dwelling hamlet on 31-hectare grounds, perched on a rocky promontory, twenty minutes from Angoulême in the department of Charente . Set within a rolling landscape, the property, perched on a rocky outcrop, overlooks the valley and the nearby river that borders the estate to the southeast. Accessible from the north via a drive that passes, on the right, garages carved out of the rock as well as the large openings of the former 5,000-m² quarries, which, more recently, have been used to grow mushrooms, it then ascends to the centre of the six-dwelling complex. The main dwelling is positioned in the middle, with a raised bakehouse to the east, while four dwellings skirt the promontory to the south and a last one is located to the north, as is a converted greenhouse to the northwest. At the foot of the rocky outcrop, two large openings lead to underground galleries of 600 m² and six springs, surrounded by large ashlar stones, are scattered throughout the meadow to the south that reaches all the way to the base of a cliff. In addition, vast meadows surrounded by woodland extend to the north of the building complex.

House with garden and terrace Toucy (89)

An authentic country house with a lush garden boasting a variety of plants and trees, 2 hours from Paris, in Burgundy, in the Yonne area. A small road that winds through the slightly undulating countryside as far as the eye can see leads to the hamlet made up of stone houses and former farmyard buildings. At the end of the road, there is a former wash house surrounded by meadows. High stone walls lined with honeysuckle and vines, a reminder of the region’s origins, flank the house. There are two entrances to the property: the first is through a white fence leading to a patio sheltered by large trees, while the second is through a small white door that leads directly into the garden. Instead of a doorbell, there is a bell fixed high up on the wall, adding character to the dwelling. Japanese paving leads up to the entrance door through a lush, green lawn. There is also a barn next to this north-south facing three-storey house with a gabled roof made of Burgundy flat tiles. Purple wisteria adorns the limewash rendered façades of the buildings, including the one to the rear of the house facing north, from which a dry-stone wall extends, enclosing a patio with wooden decking, recently installed for use during the summer.

House with pool and garden Riberac (24)

A renovated house with outbuildings, an orchard and a lap pool, overlooking the River Dronne valley near the town of Ribérac in France’s beautiful Périgord area. The property looks away from the village. It lies at the end of a narrow cul-de-sac, which is extended by a shady footpath. It is made up of several distinct spaces in terraces. The main dwelling dates back to the mid-19th century. It has a ground floor, a first floor and a second floor in the roof space. It towers upon a plateau and looks eastwards and southwards down at a closed inner court, a former barn and a lean-to garage. This tall, grand house adjoins a medieval dwelling that is not currently lived in. Its base follows the slope to fit with the terrain and make the most of the beautiful view. A mansard roof crowns the house. Gabled dormers and modern skylights dot the roof. The three elevations of exposed stonework are punctuated with large-paned windows with wooden frames, fitted with partly louvred shutters that are painted blue. Renovation work was recently carried out on the property. On the ground floor, the timber beams have been smoothened, the window frames changed, the ceiling repainted and a new kitchen fitted. On the first floor, ceiling boards have been removed, ceiling insulation added and walk-in wardrobes and cupboards fitted. And for the whole place, the electrical system has been revamped, the lap pool renovated and an electric gate fitted in the garage. There is a clear view of the natural surroundings. Lower down, in parallel to a few rows of vines, there is a lap pool. This lap pool is 10 metres long and 2 metres wide. It was built in a spot where swimmers can best admire the sweeping view of the landscape. Work on the lap pool is currently being finished. There is a parking area between the meadow and the lane.

House with garden and terrace Malakoff (92)

A characterful house from the late 19th century with a garden, nestled in the town of Malakoff, beside Paris. The house is nestled away from urban bustle. A bucolic garden extends beside it and gives the dwelling absolute privacy. The edifice was built in 1890. Today it combines historical authenticity with modern touches. It offers a total floor area of more than 150m² and includes a large conservatory – a recent high-quality extension that the current owners added. This extension houses a kitchen that leads out into the garden. The house has always had a first and second floor above its ground floor. Pale rendering coats its stone facade, which is punctuated with a stringcourse, a cornice and window surrounds with mouldings. A roof of flat tiles and zinc crowns the dwelling. The ground floor has a lounge and an office. An elegant staircase of painted wood with a wrought-iron balustrade leads upstairs, where there are four bedrooms, a bathroom and two shower rooms. A fifth bedroom could be created inside the house too. A spacious basement can be used to store food, drinks and equipment. The house’s technical installation spaces also lie down here. The tree-dotted garden has several spaces: a stone terrace, grassy areas and clusters of shrubs. A wide range of plants grow here. There is a closed garage in which two cars can be parked. It offers a storage space.

House with garden and terrace Excideuil (24)

A country house to be renovated with two barns and one hectare of grounds, nestled in the Périgord Vert region, near the village of Excideuil. The house was built on a hillside, next to a hamlet that spreads along the hill and over the plateau. At ground level, the property’s rear side is edged with a public track that leads to a craftsman’s barn before running along the river. On the other side of the track, a triangular plot of land offers space and light in front of the entrance, ensuring privacy from the house opposite it. Further up the track is a second barn, surrounded by two gardens. It looks over a raised terrace on one side of the house. Two old lime trees cast shade over this raised terrace, which forms an undisturbed sanctuary as it is largely enclosed by a protective ruin and a high stone wall against which an access staircase has been built from scratch. Several steps further down lies the garden level, made up of a vast terrace that overlooks a sheep meadow. Its sweeping 180-degree view takes in the valley, the river and the village. A stone’s throw away, on the plateau, a plot of orchard land that can be built upon is offered as an option. It covers around 1,300m².

House with terrace Estremoz (Portugal)

In Estremoz, the old Casa dos Encarnados to be renovated, with terrace and view of the castle. The Casa dos Encarnados hosted meetings and concerts in the early 20th century. Artists performed there, and regulars returned. The ground floor retains its vaulted ceilings and original rectangular marble flooring. Later, a couple reopened the bar, recreating this atmosphere of music and friends. Today, the 766 m² property awaits its next life. The two upper floors have been restored: insulation, new door and window frames, double and triple glazing, and new installations. The duplex is being sold unfinished, allowing for personal choices of materials. The terrace on the first floor offers a view of the castle. A small adjoining house, with a separate entrance from a cypress-lined square, connects to the former bar and terrace. The property can remain as one unit or be divided: shop downstairs, duplex, detached house. Estremoz is renovating its centre, and the Rossio is a three-minute walk away. A place steeped in history, ready for a new chapter.

House with garden and terrace Fontenay-aux-Roses (92)

An elegant 360-m² manor house with a 1,100-m² garden, in the Hauts-de-Seine area, between Sceaux and Fontenay-aux-Roses. Two centuries of history are engraved in the walls of the property located on the edge of several green spaces. The manor house was built in 1899 very close to Sceaux and was a place where Parisians would come for a weekend to enjoy themselves and sate their appetites, taking advantage of the clean country air. A wrought-iron entrance gate leads into the property’s grounds. The front façade of the building is made of ashlar and includes eight windows, while on the rear red-brick façade there are seven. The mansard style roof is made of zinc and slate tiles. The house is made up of a basement, a ground floor and two upper floors, with a total of eleven rooms. The ground floor houses a vast living room, an office and a kitchen, all of which are bathed in light. The first floor and second floor each possess four bedrooms and one bathroom. A lean-to standing against the house is used for storing logs and for drying laundry. The large, lush, approximately 1,000-m² garden is lined by tall trees, with a central lawn. To the rear of the house, a south-facing patio covered by a pergola on which Virginia creeper grows makes it possible to enjoy warm sunny days in total peace and quiet. The utility room can be reached from the exterior, at the rear of the house. At the end of the garden there is a garage with capacity for one car. The heating is gas powered and all the windows are double glazed.

House with pool and garden Chaumont-en-Vexin (60)

A vast, 17th-century townhouse with a view of the medieval church, 1 hour from Paris, in the town centre of Chaumont-en-Vexin. This townhouse is among the largest historical residences in Chaumont and is located in the town centre, near to the town hall and at the foot of the hill on which the church is built. It was built in the second half of the 17th century and from its beginnings it was the residence of people of note, especially members of the clergy from the nearby church. The classically styled façade overlooking the street boasts eight openings spread over two storeys. There is also an attic level with hipped dormer windows in the building’s slate roof. The entrance to the property is via a carriage gate in the centre of the façade. This double-leaf, solid wooden door is topped by a barrel-arch and framed by two stone pilasters. The entrance porch leads to the house’s interior as well as to the garden and outbuildings. The façade overlooking the garden has the same number of openings as the other, with large, double-leaf windows equipped with hinged shutters on the ground floor and louvred shutters on the first floor. Next to the townhouse, another 19th-century building with a brick façade is also part of the property. It is a second and separate home but is connected with the main building. To the rear, there is an Italian garden laid out in terraces that climb up to the Saint Jean Baptiste church. The view looking up to this flamboyant Gothic monument is unobstructed.

In the village, the former municipal tax collection office – which once housed the local school a century ago – has been entirely restored and converted into cosy guest accommodations. With approximately 170 m², the house stands out thanks to its high ceilings and rooms bathed in light, which provide 180° panoramic views of the surrounding Cévennes valleys that extend as far as the eye can see. Facing south, it marks the village’s southern border and is extended by a wooden patio that seems to float above the landscape. Manor Azay-le-Rideau (37)

A 17th & 18th century manor house, outbuildings and parkland, set in almost 2 hectares of land near Azay-le-Rideau, in Touraine . At the end of the village, a lane winds through the countryside to the property entrance. A wrought-iron gate, supported by two tufa stone pillars, opens onto a driveway that crosses the parkland in front of the residence and leads on to the outbuildings. Originally a simple hunting lodge, the dwelling was probably built in the 17th century, then extended in the 18th century and later. It is in an asymmetrical shape and is oriented east-west. The main west-facing façade features tufa-framed windows with cornices under the roof and a stringcourse over a tower wing. The carved wooden entrance door on the central section is off-centre. To the east, French windows lead from a grass terrace into the house. The slate roofs are adorned with zinc finials. The central double body, with a single storey under the eaves, is topped by a small square tower and flanked to the north by a rectangular tower lodge, also two storeys’ high under the eaves, and a single-storey building to the south. The rendered stone façades, with tufa stone quoins, have various sized windows, with small or large panes and tufa stone surrounds. The slate roofs have triangular pediment dormers in the central section. The interiors still have some of the old features, such as parquet flooring and tufa stone fireplaces in the reception rooms. The six bedrooms are spread over the three floors of the house. Extensive wooded parkland surrounds the manor house, covering almost 2 hectares, with terraces, gardens and undergrowth. There are also rock cellars, a swimming pool in need of renovation and three outbuildings on the estate.

From town, the road traverses fields and forests up until it reaches a no-through road, which provides access to several dwellings. Facing an immense pasture bordered by woods, included within the property, a wide gravel courtyard is surrounded by a group of buildings on three of its sides: a 17th-century dwelling, in the middle, is flanked on one side by a barn and outbuildings and, on the other, by a covered carriage entranceway, a former press room and a garage. Manor Villeneuve-sur-Lot (47)

A Belle Epoque villa, with grounds, a swimming pool, outbuildings and a view of the village perched on the hill, at the foot of a royal fortified town in the Lot-et-Garonne area. From the country road and just a few minutes from all essential amenities, a private, 300-metre-long drive forms a lengthy spiral around the property from the north, lined by woods and tall trees, up to the property’s gate, from where the eastern façade of the elegant, late-19th century residence looms into view between the trees and shrubs in the garden. After the entrance gate, the gravelled drive widens before the stoop, allowing visitors to disembark from their vehicles, before continuing to the garages several metres further on. The approximately 350-m² villa stands out thanks to its balanced proportions and immaculate architecture, that of a bourgeois residence, in which the façades are punctuated by regular rows of windows and discrete decorative elements, revealing a carefully thought-out construction. It is made up of a vast kitchen, a lounge, a dining room, six bedrooms and four shower rooms, as well as several service rooms. It pays witness to Belle Epoque period architecture, with its brick and stone, light-coloured rendered walls, inspired by spa town edifices. The large and perfectly aligned windows are fitted with wooden, louvred shutters painted in a warm brown hue that combines well with the decorative details in brick. The gable end is dotted with decorative oculi while the gabled roof is topped by finely crafted ridge cap, giving the building a silhouette that stands out in the Lot-et-Garonne landscape, in the midst of 2.5-hectare grounds boasting tall cedars, oak and ash trees as well as flowering shrubs, in an orderly and harmonious whole. To the south of the house, the stone and wooden outbuildings are made up of a garage, a barn and stables with a riding area. To the west, there is a large patio at the end of which stands a period ornamental balustrade, followed by the swimming pool and view up to the royal fortified village.

House with pool and garden Lachapelle (82)

A Gascon chateau, a commandery of the Knights Templar and their many outbuildings around an enclosed garden, in the centre of a charming and historic village, at the gates of the Gers department, one hour from Toulouse. Built on a rocky outcrop and enclosed by fortified walls, the detached complex of buildings overlooks the village's few neighbouring houses and enjoys a 360° view of the surrounding rolling countryside from each of its edifices. Sheltered from view, the property is also steeped in silence given that the secluded village is only accessible via one small road. The adjacent buildings that compose the architectural complex surround a grassy courtyard as well as the former chapel of the “Knights’ Manor”, which became a church in the 15th century. Although it forms a harmonious whole with stone exteriors topped with barrel tile roofs, different buildings stand out due to the masonry of their exteriors, their roofs and other architectural elements specific to the successive periods in which the property was remodelled, such as its patios or windows. Consequently, the chateau that houses the current 330-m² dwelling distinguishes itself from the rest of the property thanks to its towers that cadence its exterior walls clad in stone and small bricks, as well as its many windows and immense patio of more than 100 m², highlighted with authentic balusters. As for the former Knights Templars monastery, which was later used as a wine storehouse and then a residence, it is a perfect example of medieval architecture. The horseshoe-shaped building presents traces of its former functions as a fortified chateau as demonstrated by the arrow slits, loopholes and scars resulting from the multiples modifications to its exterior over the centuries. With a surface area of 450 m², it has two storeys, including the attic space, and is topped with a gabled roof bordered by a triple Genoise corbel, while its exterior walls, composed of an amalgam of unpointed massive rubble stone masonry and ashlar stone, are characteristic of medieval constructions. Nestled next to one another, the outbuildings – former barns, stables, wine storehouse and other storerooms – are arranged between the two main buildings in such a way as to create a single edifice, which acts as the village's epicentre. It was only recently that a tree-filled landscaped piece of land below the village was annexed to the property. Today, sheltered from view, it includes a swimming pool and pool house in need of a bit of refreshing.

House with garden and terrace Royan (17)

In a spa town between Bordeaux and La Rochelle, a discreet, 230-m² house, its tree-filled garden, large upper patio, garage and studio. Rectangular in shape and built over two levels, the house is topped by barrel tile roofs, the organisation of which demonstrates that initially, there were most likely several houses and outhouses built one after the other depending on the needs at the time. The visible stone masonry is punctuated by numerous windows and doors surrounded by ashlar stone. On the garden side, the ground floor rooms are connected via a 20-metre gallery along the façade, looking out over the garden with its picture windows. As for the upstairs, this floor includes a patio of approximately 65 m², which extends along the entire length of the house. From there, the view extends to the rooftops of the city’s chateau and, on the right side, over the Romanesque church’s bell tower. Right next door, a covered and converted section provides access to a small courtyard adjacent to the studio, which looks out over one of the town’s squares.

House with garden and terrace Bagnoles-de-l'Orne (61)

An Art Deco former hotel and its tree-filled garden of 4,500 m² along the edge of the spa town of Bagnoles-de-l’Orne. Surrounded by many villas built in the Anglo-Norman style of the 1920-30s, the property, which contains one of the older buildings in the residential neighbourhood, is located on the corner of two quiet streets and partially concealed behind the tall trees of its garden, the latter of which still retains its original outline. Accessible via a private road in the back, the imposing three-storey building overlooks the street and is made up of an immense central structure, flanked by two right-angle wings and pavilions abutting each end. Built over several periods, the edifice nevertheless exhibits a rather homogeneous style with false half-timbering, wrap-around stringcourses and brick arches, dormer windows, wooden guardrails and a slate Mansard roof. In addition, immense windows, a conservatory as well as a number of balconies and terraces enliven its stately exteriors.

Property with garden Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye (89)

A stately dwelling and its enclosed garden in the middle of a village, recognised as a “Town of Character”, two hours from Paris, nestled within the Puisaye countryside. In a village with picturesque lanes lined with stately homes, one in particular stands out thanks to its many entrances: a painted ornate metal door opens on to the property’s garden, a wooden door topped with a fanlight is used as the dwelling’s front door, a restored double-leaf gate, near the outbuildings, provides vehicle access, while a final door is located in the back of the garden, surrounded by vegetation. In addition, a lovely flagstone patio skirts the dwelling on one side and, extending on from here, the grounds feature a stone bench, ideal for relaxing under the shade of the birches, as well as an ancient greenhouse, whereas a well surrounded by grass could be repurposed and an ancient drinking trough next to the woodshed provides an additional touch of charm to the premises. Lastly, a small path leads to a gravel drive, reserved for vehicle parking, located next to the outbuildings with their red shutters, the colour of which is identical to that of the double-leaf gate, while, sheltered from view, a small vegetable garden is planted with raspberry bushes as well as other fruits and vegetables.
