Castle Bourg-en-Bresse (01)

A 117 m² flat with panoramic views in a listed 15th century castle with over 2 ha of grounds in the Ain region, between Lyon and Geneva. The castle, standing on a plateau with thick stone buttresses at the southern tip of the Revermont mountain range, overlooks and keeps guard over the village and the river. After passing through the gate that marks the entrance to the grounds, a vast parking area stretches out in front, and to the right, a tree-lined driveway ascends to the old outbuildings. These are arranged around a courtyard, comprising a farmhouse, a barn and a former convent building that has been converted into lodgings. The architecture, at once simple and angular, testifies to the authenticity of the site. As you look beyond their rendered facades topped by monk-and-nun tiles, the castle can be made out to the south, with its grounds featuring large lawns and shady footpaths. Rebuilt in the 16th century, the east-facing structure is preceded by a gravel area and stands out for its striking four-storey height. The impressive rendered facades are topped by a hip roof with flat tiles. Numerous tall windows let the light stream into the interior. At the north end, it is flanked by a solid square tower. At the end of the 15th century, this tower housed the tomb of Philibert Le Beau, Duke of Savoy, and the chapel of his wife Marguerite of Austria, daughter of Emperor Maximilian I, after whom the staircase in the main building is named. The tower, built of exposed dressed stone, reflects the architectural style of the Renaissance: the cross-mullioned windows, topped with triangular or round-arched pediments, follow the course of the stone staircase. The second floor flat comprises three bedrooms, a spacious living room with an open-plan kitchen, a bathroom and a separate lavatory. The site, mansion and outbuildings have all been listed as historic monuments since 2004.

Castle Aubenas (07)

A listed 14th-17th century castle offering two aspects in southern Ardèche, the 'French Tuscany'. The property is not easily approached. Behind a large gate, the castle offers passers-by its medieval aspects: towers, watchtowers, bretèches, machicolations, moats and embrasures. The oldest parts of the building were probably built in the 14th century, and it still retains many elements from that period. The property withstood the most troubled periods of the Middle Ages and the Wars of Religion. In addition to the defensive features, a few remnants of the richly decorated interior remain. The castle has been listed as a historic monument since 1988, its architecture bears witness to the dense and eventful history of the Vivarais region. Once the region had been pacified, the castle became a place of entertainment and pleasure in the 17th and 18th centuries. Large windows were created on the facades, the larger rooms adorned with big fireplaces and the surrounding grounds turned into ornamental gardens. In the 19th century, the eastern façade was redesigned with Tuscan accents and enhanced by a vast terrace extended by avenues lined with dozens of cypress and olive trees. Handed down by the daughters of the family until the 20th century, the property was sold to the current owners in the 20th century. They undertook a complete state of the art restoration of the site: from lime-rendered and painted walls, small-paned windows to various Italian and French gardens.

Listed castle Largentiere (07)

IN THE HEART OF THE REGIONAL PARK OF THE MONTS D’ARDECHE This stronghold is located in a beautiful village near Largentière and Aubenas, 1 hour from Montélimar. With two towers dating from the 14th and 15th century, built around a superb central stone spiral staircase leading to three levels and an attic. The central part was built in 1567 with the addition of watchtowers, loopholes and machicolations on the towers by the Seigneur de la Motte de Chalendar then syndic of the Vivarais, hiring several soldiers to defend the house and his family against looters. At the end of the 18th century, the living room and the Florentine suite were redesigned according to Tuscan inspiration with an Italian terrace and French ceilings. The house develops around 600 sqm with a cellar, attics, an independent tower, a garage, small outbuildings under the moat with a well fed by a spring. The exteriors of approximately one hectare include five different gardens, two plots of vines, a swimming pool. This rather austere defense castle for its northern facade has a completely different easterly exposure with terraces and large openings overlooking the Florentine garden with arcades supporting the terrace and giving the whole a beautiful Tuscan villa look. This chateau remained in the same family, passed on by the ladies in 2004, when the current owners undertook the complete restoration. On the basement level, there are various vaulted rooms, a laundry room, the boiler room with central heating by oil-fired radiators, a vaulted cellar On the ground floor, an entrance hall, a living room with fireplace, a dining room, a kitchen and scullery, a bedroom with bathroom, a library, a library lounge On the 1st floor, a suite with shower room, two dressing rooms, separate toilets, five other bedrooms, a shower room, a billiard room On the 2nd floor, two bedrooms, rooms currently used as attics Then in the independent tower, a living room, a kitchen, two bedrooms Outside, large terraces, a swimming pool, various gardens, a wooded park, vineyards Lots of charm and character, this family home is quite unique, it is very private without being isolated because in the village, it benefits from a very nice view and very easy access from the southern motorway.

Castle Grenoble (38)

An 11th century castle, its guest houses and outbuildings on a 45-ha, unspoilt, natural estate in the midst of the Trièves region. Once a stronghold house, this property includes a castle, spanning approx. 900 m² of living space, three independent, converted guest houses, spanning between 120 and 200 m² of living space, an interior, cobblestoned courtyard, numerous outbuildings, a 12x6 m swimming pool, an exercise and sauna room, a spa, a French formal garden and a vegetable garden, all in an excellent state of repair. Although the exact date the stronghold house was constructed is unknown, everything points to that fact that it was sometime around the year 1000, that is to say the early Middle-Ages. Around 1450, King Charles VII, alarmed by the plotting of his older son, the future King Louis XI, simply gave him the province of Dauphiné to govern as he saw fit under the name of Louis XI. The latter was to live there for ten years and became very popular in the Trièves region, where the stronghold house became his favourite hunting lodge and took pride in his royal visits. Up until the end of the Middle-Ages, Montmeilleur belonged to the Bérenger-de-Morges family. Their coat-of-arms is still to be found today on the entrance gateway and the monumental fireplace in the large reception room. Following a succession of leading citizens, including the Marquis-de-Langon, Montmeilleur was destroyed at the time of the French Revolution, archives were lost and the castle fell into ruin. Sold in 1841 to Constantin-Abrard, Montmeilleur remained for more than a century in the hands of this same family, descending directly through the female line and including the Thibaud-Gibbs family who undertook major renovation works around 1875. This tradition came to a halt when the son of Madame-Thibaud sold the property in 1957. In one of his imaginary constructions, “A King Alone”, a Provencal, complex novel that takes place between Lalley and Chichilianne, Jean-Giono greatly enhances his memories of Montmeilleur, where he stayed numerous times, by taking inspiration from the personality of Madame-Thibaud.
