House with garden and terrace Chesham (United Kingdom)

A Storied Past The site has a long-standing heritage, with records showing a windmill in the vicinity as early as the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1863, a smock mill was constructed by the Norwich Wind and Steam Company. However, it was short-lived and dismantled by 1883. Later that same year, a new masonry tower mill was built thought to be one of the last of its kind in England by Hillsdons of Tring, at a cost of ?300. The tall chimney associated with the steam-powered mill was removed shortly after, though the original flywheel from the steam engine has been thoughtfully preserved and now forms a striking feature in the dining room. The first known miller of the new tower mill was Daniel Dwight, succeeded by Thomas Robinson in 1891. Robinson, with experience in steam milling, continued operations until the mill ceased production in 1912. The property was then converted into a private residence the following year. Among the earliest residents were writer Gilbert Cannan and his wife Mary (formerly married to J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan). The Cannans hosted many notable guests connected to artistic circles such as the Bloomsbury Group and the London Group. Celebrated figures like D.H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, and painter Mark Gertler were known visitors. Gertler`s famous painting, Gilbert Cannan at His Mill now housed in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford captures Cannan outside the mill with two dogs, one believed to have inspired Nana in Peter Pan. After the Cannans left in 1916, the mill was rented by acclaimed American actress Doris Keane as a countryside retreat. In the 1930s, the building found new life as an artist`s studio under Bernard Adams. More recently, it was home to Sir David Hatch, a well-known BBC Radio director and one- time member of the Cambridge Footlights, who hosted memorable gatherings with friends from the world of entertainment. Thoughtful Restoration and Accommodation The current owners have lovingly restored the windmill`s cap, sails, and fantail, carefully replicating the original Victorian design. The fantail is fully operational, allowing the cap to rotate with the wind, though the sails and fantail are currently secured for safety. The home`s entrance opens into the circular reception hall at the base of the tower, leading into the inner hall of the adjoining cottage. Two elegant and light-filled reception rooms sit on either side, with the sitting room featuring a cosy wood-burning stove. A spiral staircase leads down to the lower ground floor, where you`ll find a spacious dining room showcasing the original steam flywheel, and a large kitchen/breakfast room with an Aga and French doors opening onto a sun-drenched terrace. Upstairs, three generously sized bedrooms and two bathrooms (one en suite) provide comfortable accommodation. A stunning circular fourth bedroom with en suite shower is ideal for guests, while a further staircase leads to a fifth bedroom perfect as a home office, with spectacular countryside views. From here, a ladder gives access to the cap and the original mill workings. Idyllic Gardens and Setting The beautifully maintained country garden is a peaceful haven, with lovely views over open fields. Well-stocked flower beds, neat lawns, and a tranquil seating area offer a perfect escape. Additional features include two summerhouses, a shed, and a workshop. From the owners. `We especially enjoy sitting in the sunny garden appreciating the views of the beautiful Chiltern countryside. The house works well for entertaining and we have many happy memories of wonderful parties and family gatherings. It is indeed a special place and we have been very lucky to live here.` Location Braziers End is a quaint hamlet near Cholesbury, a village with Anglo-Saxon roots, nestled on the Buckinghamshire Hertfordshire border. The surrounding Chiltern Hills, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offer scenic walks and bridleways. The popular Full Moon pub and restaurant is just a short distance away. House with garden and terrace London (United Kingdom)

Situated on the highly sought-after Ufton Grove, N1, within the De Beauvoir Conservation Area, this exceptional four-bedroom Victorian end-of-terrace freehold house presents a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully crafted family home of outstanding quality. Meticulously refurbished and architecturally reimagined, the property combines elegant period detailing with best-in-class contemporary specification, creating a home of remarkable character, width and volume.Behind its handsome façade, the house unfolds into a series of beautifully proportioned interiors, notable for their unusually generous lateral space—an uncommon attribute in this location. The ground floor, enhanced by a professional excavation, enjoys exceptional ceiling heights and a wonderful sense of light and openness.A formal reception room to the front offers a refined setting for entertaining, bathed in natural light from south-facing sash windows and centred around an extraordinary hand-carved 17th-century Louis XIV fireplace, sourced from a French château. A second matching fireplace further enhances the home’s sense of heritage and distinction. The principal living space lies to the rear, where a striking open-plan kitchen, dining and family area has been designed as the true heart of the home. Finished to a specification comparable with high-end American residences, it features a substantial central island, bespoke cabinetry and a comprehensive suite of premium appliances, including double ovens, twin dishwashers, wine refrigeration and air conditioning. A separate pantry and boot room—rarely found in similar homes—add further practicality.Expansive slimline glazing spans the rear elevation, with full-width sliding doors opening onto a beautifully landscaped, low-maintenance garden. Designed for seamless indoor-outdoor living, this space lends itself equally well to everyday family life and large-scale entertaining. Both the front and rear gardens have been thoughtfully planted to provide exceptional privacy, creating tranquil green outlooks of trees and sky rather than neighbouring houses. The house has been the subject of an extensive and highly considered renovation by the award-winning architects Creig & Stephenson, known for their celebrated work at Borough Market. Their design includes a pioneering rear extension and carefully engineered garden excavation, incorporating glazed boundaries to maximise natural light while avoiding any sense of a lowered ground floor—an approach that is both innovative and rarely achieved locally.Accommodation is arranged across the upper floors, comprising four well-proportioned bedrooms and two contemporary bath/shower rooms. The principal suite occupies the top floor and benefits from uniquely elevated post-war window proportions, affording excellent natural light, far-reaching sky views and a high degree of privacy—an uncommon advantage compared to neighbouring homes.A particularly notable feature is the provision of a WC on every floor. In an area where planning restrictions often prevent such additions—and where many comparable houses have only a single bathroom or must sacrifice bedroom space—this thoughtful configuration significantly enhances day-to-day living and sets the property apart.Throughout, the house balances elegance with ingenuity, including bespoke details such as a concealed chinoiserie panel in the ground floor bathroom, revealing generous hidden storage.Ufton Grove is superbly positioned for access to Haggerston and Dalston Junction Overground stations, with Canonbury and Essex Road also within easy reach, providing swift connections to Shoreditch, the City and Canary Wharf. The independent cafés, restaurants and amenities of Southgate Road and Essex Road are nearby, along with the open green spaces of De Beauvoir Square, Rosemary Gardens, Shoreditch Park and the Regent’s Canal. De Beauvoir combines a quiet, village-like setting with immediate access to some of East London’s most popular independent spots, including De Beauvoir Deli, Sappe, and nearby canal-side favourites, alongside local pubs such as The De Beauvoir Arms. Just moments from Shoreditch and Islington, it offers a rare balance of calm residential living and vibrant café, dining and nightlife on the doorstep.Lovingly maintained for over 25 years, this is a rare and exceptional home—offering architectural distinction, outstanding specification and beautifully considered family living in one of Islington’s most desirable enclaves. Seller Insight Viola has been our home since 2012, and from the very beginning, it's been something truly special. We built this house ourselves with a dream of creating the perfect family home, and over the years, it has become exactly that and more. What first drew us here was the location. As you turn down the private road, there's an immediate sense of calm, it feels like stepping into another world, far removed from the noise and busyness of everyday life. That feeling has never faded. Because we built the house, we were able to create a space that perfectly balances family living with entertaining. We didn't cut corners when it came to comfort, and every detail has been thoughtfully considered. It's a home that feels luxurious, yet completely practical too. Features like the internal laundry chute have made everyday life that little bit easier. We've taken great care of the house over the years, and it's something we're really proud of. The kitchen is without a doubt our favourite room. It's the heart of the home - somewhere we can cook and spend time together while entertaining. In the summer, opening the doors creates a seamless flow into the garden, while in the colder months it still feels warm and cosy. It's a space that just works, no matter the season. The garden was always central to our vision. With its large wraparound patio, it's peaceful and private - a real escape. It's been the perfect place for long summer days and evenings, with the TV, sound system, and outdoor lighting creating a lovely indoor-outdoor lifestyle. This has always been a home made for entertaining and bringing people together. From movie nights in the cinema room when the children were younger, to hosting Christmas with family returning year after year, it's a house full of life and memories. There's plenty of space for everyone, so it never feels crowded- just warm and welcoming. The community here is something quite rare. It's quiet and private, yet always supportive when it matters, it's a lovely balance of seclusion and connection that's hard to find. What we'll miss most is the love, care, and thought that went into building this home. It's more than just a house to us - it's been a huge part of our lives, and leaving it won't be easy. We're moving to be closer to family, and we know it's the right time. We truly hope the next family will love this home as much as we have.
